CurvilinearGrids.jl: A Julia package for curvilinear coordinate transformations

Finite-difference discretizations of partial differential equations are widespread throughout the scientific community. Oftentimes finite-differences are used to compute spatial gradients of fields on a discrete grid, which is typically a uniform or rectilinear Cartesian mesh. Arbitrary multidimensional geometry is difficult to discretize directly with finite differences, however, due to non-uniform grid spacing and non-orthogonality. Curvilinear coordinate transformations can be used as a strategy to enable arbitrary geometry. While these curvilinear transformations are straightforward, the governing PDEs require additional terms (metrics) and must adhere to strict conservation laws; these criteria complicate the application of the transformation and require careful implementation.

DeepHyper: A Python Package for Massively Parallel Hyperparameter Optimization in Machine Learning

Machine learning models are increasingly applied across scientific disciplines, yet their effectiveness often hinges on heuristic decisions—such as data transformations, training strategies, and model architectures—that are not learned by the models themselves. Automating the selection of these heuristics and analyzing their sensitivity is crucial for building robust and efficient learning workflows. DeepHyper addresses this challenge by democratizing hyperparameter optimization, providing accessible tools to streamline and enhance machine learning workflows from a laptop to the largest supercomputer in the world. Building on top of hyperparameter optimization, it unlocks new capabilities around ensembles of models for improved accuracy and uncertainty quantification. All of these organized around efficient parallel computing.

hashin_shtrikman_mp: a package for the optimal design and discovery of multi-phase composite materials

hashin_shtrikman_mp is a tool for composites designers who have desired composite properties in mind, but who do not yet have an underlying formulation. The library utilizes the tightest theoretical bounds on the effective properties of composite materials with unspecified microstructure – the Hashin-Shtrikman bounds – to identify candidate theoretical materials, find real materials that are close to the candidates, and determine the optimal volume fractions for each of the constituents in the resulting composite. Its features include (i) leveraging of materials in the Materials Project database, (ii) integration with the Materials Project API, (iii) use of genetic machine-learning, (iv) agnosticism to underlying microstructure, and (v) ultimate engineering application, make it a tool with much broader applications than its predecessors.

Inventory Data Package for the Hanford Site Composite Analysis

The disposed inventory estimate is perhaps the most important component of the composite analysis (CA), as it directly affects the future radiological impacts following site closure. The goal is to estimate radionuclide inventory from site inception to closure. Because of the inclusive nature of a CA, all relevant contaminants are identified and initially considered. Then, subsets of contaminants appropriate for quantitative analysis are selected. Reducing the number of radionuclides for inclusion in the quantitative analysis helps focus budget and resources on simulating only those radionuclides that are likely to contribute to the total dose to the receptor above a threshold value. Inventory is reported within the geographical boundary of the Hanford Site 200 Areas and includes contributing sources on the Central Plateau. The inventory covers the radiological inventories of historical discharges and residuals that have the potential to release after closure. The reported inventory is focused on the source terms needed for transport modeling and the evaluation of risk associated with the ground water pathway. Risk from the air pathway was considered. Inventories of sites with approved performance assessments (PAs) will be integrated using their release curves directly with vadose zone transport modeling.

Vadose Zone Flow and Transport Parameters Data Package for the Hanford Site Composite Analysis

This report provides a description of the basis for the development and implementation of a conceptual model for vadose zone flow and transport for the Hanford Site composite analysis (CA) groundwater pathway analysis. The parameterization for a numerical model is intimately linked to the conceptual model framework. This report describes the basis for the selection of hydraulic and transport parameters for the hydrostratigraphic units (HSUs) identified in the 200 East and 200 West Areas. The following three-step process was used to develop the hydraulic properties and transport parameters for the CA modeling: 1. Breakdown of existing database on hydraulic properties by HSUs 2. Constitutive model parameters for laboratory, core-scale hydraulic properties 3. Upscaling for macroscopic, field-scale flow, and transport parameters This document provides data and information on the following items: A brief description and technical basis for the conceptual model selected to represent vadose zone flow and transport for the CA modeling. Variation in sediment particle size distribution for representative sites in the 200 East and West Areas. A summary of effective (upscaled) moisture retention, and saturated and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity estimates for the HSUs in the 200 East and West Areas. A summary of effective transport parameters, including sediment bulk density and macrodispersivity estimates for various HSUs. The 200 East Area B Complex perched water aquifer hydraulic properties

A software package for modeling and simulating fault graphs

This report describes a novel fault graph modeling language and a simulation tool for executing models specified in the language. The modeling language has three primary features that distinguish it from similar reliability analysis tools. These are (1) a random variable modeling several distinct outcomes of a single fault; (2) chains of faults in which one fault triggers another; and (3) time to fail sampled from probability distributions including positive normal, exponential, Weibull with a minimum, or immediate. These features are motivated by their use in a historical analysis of centrifuge reliability.

Model Package Report: Geoframework Model of the Hanford Site 100 Area

The purpose of the 100 Area Geoframework Model (GFM) is to provide a reasonable, consistent, and defensible three dimensional representation of the hydrostratigraphic units below the River Corridor at the Hanford Site to support contaminant fate and transport models. The GFM is a three dimensional representation of the subsurface geologic structure. From this, three dimensional geologic model-exported results, in the form of points or surfaces, are used as inputs to populate and assemble the various numerical model architectures. The objective of this report is to define the process used to produce a hydrostratigraphic model for the hydrostratigraphic units beneath the Hanford Site 100 Area. The GFM may support several other CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company project needs and objectives, including providing geologic information to support remedial investigations and actions and as a tool to present River Corridor geology and contaminant extents. The GFM was constructed based on information through 2019 available in the Integrated Data Management System, Hanford Environmental Information System, and the Hanford Site geologic contacts (GeoContacts) datasets. Revisions to the 100 Area GFM may occur to incorporate new data and information. Each version will be maintained in configuration control using date stamps for identifying supporting databases, figures, and interpretations. Supporting data include the final three dimensional geoframework surfaces, two dimensional structure and isopach maps, and all the geologic contact inputs and interpreted geologic log data. These final products provide a supporting set of geologic information that together allow the creation of the GFM. This information is managed, updated, and maintained via CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company under the Environmental Model Management Archive.

Vadose Zone Flow and Transport Parameters Data Package for the Hanford Site Composite Analysis and Cumulative Impact Evaluation

This report provides a description of the basis for the development and implementation of a conceptual model for vadose zone flow and transport for the composite analysis (CA) groundwater pathway analysis and the cumulative impact evaluation (CIE). The parameterization for a numerical model is intimately linked to the conceptual model framework. The report describes the basis for the selection of hydraulic and transport parameters for the hydrostratigraphic units (HSUs) identified in the 200 East and 200 West Areas. Whenever data are sparse or unavailable, surrogate hydraulic properties are chosen based on samples collected within the 200 Areas and nearby locations that are representative of sediments characteristic of the HSUs identified elsewhere.

Wedding Cake Experiments Design and Data Packages (V.2)

This report documents the design and data for four related experiments known as the Wedding Cake shots. It is a revised version of LA-UR-17-28352. The basic designs of these four shots are the same. A high-explosive plane-wave lens launches a flyer towards an acceptor material with a smaller diameter. This acceptor is either another piece of high-explosive or a piece of polyethylene. A detonation or shock wave propagates through this material and launches a second flyer. The velocities of both flyers are recorded using Photon Doppler Velocimetry (PDV). The overall shape of the shots is reminiscent of a tiered wedding cake and, consequently, these shots are know as the Wedding Cake shots. Details of the shot assembly are shown in the Wedding Cake Assembly Drawing and component drawings that accompany this report.

Two-Phase Cooling for High Packaging Density Planar Inverter: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-15-00592

The project objective was to utilize two-phase heat transfer to enable compact and power-dense inverters. The high heat transfer capacity and near isothermal characteristics of two-phase cooling can enable higher power densities, reducing the size and cost of the power electronics system. This project focused on developing efficient, passive (no pump or compressor) two-phase cooling strategies that consist of an air-cooled condenser and evaporator. This report describes the modeling work conducted to design the evaporator and air-cooled condenser for a prototype inverter development work underway in the John Deere. Prototypes of the final evaporator and condenser designs were then fabricated via 3D printing for testing. Experiments on the evaporator confirmed that this component can meet the heat load and junction temperatures requirements for Si IGBT (insulated-gate bipolar transistor) inverter. Experiments with the air-cooled condenser were not possible due to leaks through the condenser walls.
