Second Target Station (STS) Project: PIONEER Technical Report

PIONEER is a time-of-flight single-crystal neutron diffractometer at the Second Target Station (STS), aiming at providing the world-leading capability to measure tiny crystals (~0.001 mm 3 , i.e., X-ray diffraction size), ultra-thin epitaxial films (~10 nm thicknesses), and weak structural transitions and complex magnetism. The instrument will take advantage of STS source characteristics and utilize advancements in neutron optics to largely reduce the sample-volume requirement for single-crystal neutron diffraction. PIONEER will have a high-flux mode with multiple beam size options to improve the signal-to-background ratio in various sample environments. It will also provide a high Q-resolution mode by limiting beam divergence to study periodically modulated structures with characteristic lengths no less than 100 Å. Furthermore, it supports half-polarized neutron diffraction for investigating complex magnetism and local susceptibility. This report first overviews the proposed science case and the derived requirement. And then, the chosen technical solutions and expected performance will be described.

Magnetic order in single crystals of Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 with a honeycomb arrangement of 3d 7 Co 2+ ions

We have synthesized single crystals of Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 and characterized the structure and magnetic order by measuring anisotropic magnetic properties, heat capacity, and x-ray and neutron single crystal diffraction. Magnetic properties and specific heat of polycrystalline Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 were also measured for comparison. Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 crystallizes in a monoclinic structure (space group C 2 / m ) with [Co 2 SbO 6 ] 3- layers separated by Na + ions. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility shows significant anisotropic behavior in the whole temperature range 2–350 K investigated in this work. An effective moment of about 5.5μ B /Co 2+ from a Curie-Weiss fitting of the magnetic susceptibility is larger than the spin only value and signals significant orbital contribution. Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 single crystal undergoes a transition into a long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state below T N = 5K. Neutron single crystal diffraction confirmed the zigzag magnetic structure with a propagation vector k = (0.5,0.5,0). The ordered moment is found to be 0.9 μ B at 4 K and align along the crystallographic b axis. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the experimentally observed zigzag order is energetically competing with the Néel order. Furthermore, it is also found that the covalency between Co d and O p is quite strong and competes with the local spin-orbit coupling, suggesting a J eff = 1/2 ground state may not be realized in this compound.

Structural, vibrational, thermal, and magnetic properties of mullite-type NdMnTiO 5 ceramic

Mullite-type $R$Mn 2 O 5 ($R$ = Y, rare-earth element) ceramics are of ongoing research attention because of their interesting crystal-chemical and magnetic properties. We report nuclear and magnetic structures of NdMnTiO 5 together with its spectroscopic, thermogravimetric, and magnetic properties. The polycrystalline sample is prepared by solid-state synthesis and characterized from neutron and X-ray powder diffraction data Rietveld refinements. NdMnTiO 5 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group $Pbam$ with metric parameter $a$ = 755.20(1) pm, $b$ = 869.91(1) pm, $c$ = 582.42(1) pm, and $V$ = 382.62(1) 10 6 pm 3 . The Mn 3+ and Ti 4+ cations are observed to be located in the octahedral and pyramidal sites, respectively. The vibrational features in these polyhedral sites are characterized by Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopes. The higher decomposition temperature of NdMnTiO 5 , compared to other $R$Mn 2 O 5 phases, is explained in terms of the higher bond strength of Ti-O bonds than those of Mn-O bonds. Temperature-dependent DC magnetic susceptibility suggests a paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition at 43(1) K. Inverse susceptibility in the paramagnetic region above 120 K follows the Curie-Weiss law, resulting in a magnetic moment of 6.33(1) μ B per formula unit. Neutron diffraction data collected at 7.5 K reveal that the magnetic moments of Nd 3+ and Mn 3+ in NdMnTiO 5 are incommensurately ordered with a propagation vector $k$ = (0, 0.238, 0.117).

Resonant neutron scattering lengths

Unlike most of the periodic table, many rare-earth elements display considerable resonant scattering for thermal neutrons. Although this property is accompanied by strong neutron absorption, modern high-intensity neutron sources make diffraction experiments possible with these elements. Computation of scattering intensities is accomplished by fitting the variation in resonant scattering lengths ( b 0 , b ′ and b ′′) to a semi-empirical Breit–Wigner formalism, which can be evaluated over the range of neutron energies useful for diffraction, typically E = 10–600 meV; λ = 0.4–2.8 Å (with good extrapolation to longer wavelengths).

Doping effects of Cr on the physical properties of BaFe 1.9 - x Ni 0.1 Cr x As 2

We present a systematic study on the heavily Cr doped iron pnictides BaFe1.9_xNi0.1CrxAs2 by using elastic neutron scattering, high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD), resistivity, and Hall transport measurements. When the Cr concentration increases from x = 0 to 0.8, neutron diffraction experiments suggest that the collinear antiferromagnetism persists in the whole doping range, where the Neel temperature T-n coincides with the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition temperature T-s, and both of them keeps around 35 K. The magnetic ordered moment, on the other hand, increases within increasing x until x = 0.5, and then decreases with further increasing x. Detailed refinement of the powder XRD patterns reveals that the Cr substitutions actually stretch the FeAs4 tetrahedron along the c axis and lift the arsenic height away from the Fe-Fe plane. Transport results indicate that the charge carriers become more localized upon Cr doping, then changes from electron type to hole type around x = 0.5. Our results suggest that the ordered moment and the ordered temperature of static magnetism in iron pnictides can be decoupled and tuned separately by chemical doping.

Structural modulation and spin glassiness upon oxidation in oxygen storage material LnFeMnO 4+x for Ln = Y, Lu, and Yb

The mixed valence multiferroic LnFe 2+ Fe 3+ O 4 (where Ln = Y, Lu, and Yb) can reversibly uptake oxygen into its lattice, which is evidenced by a crystallographic phase transition along with the appearance of structural modulations. In this study, we show that the Mn-substituted version of this multiferroic can also be readily oxidized to LnFe 3+ Mn 3+ O 4.5 revealing similar oxygen storage behavior. Through neutron, electron, and synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies, we observe a structural modulation that we attribute to a displacement wave in the fully oxidized compound. This wave exhibits commensurability with a wavevector q = (-2/7, 1/7, 0). Bond valence summation analysis of plausible interstitial oxygen positions suggests that oxygen insertion likely occurs at the middle of the Fe/Mn–O bipyramid layers. The structural modulation of LnFeMnO 4.5 is two-dimensional, propagates along the ab-plane, and is highly symmetric as 12 identical modulation vectors are observed in the diffraction patterns. The nature of the lanthanide, Ln 3+ , does not seem to influence such modulations since we observe identical satellite reflections for all three samples of Ln = Y, Lu, and Yb. Both LnFeMnO 4 and LnFeMnO 4.5 display spin glassy behavior with 2D short-range magnetic ordering being observed in LnFeMnO 4 . Analysis of the neutron diffraction data reveals a correlation length of ~10 nm. Upon oxidation to LnFeMnO 4.5 , the short-range magnetic order is significantly suppressed.

Neutron Scattering (NS) Spectroscopy

A wide range of advanced experimental methods has been used in catalysis science to understand chemical transformations at molecular level. Among these, neutron scattering not only gives catalytic information that is highly complementary to other microscopic scattering techniques such as electrons (microscopy and diffraction) and photons from visible light to synchrotron X-rays but also often provides unique insights into catalysis. This chapter aims to provide a general overview of neutron scattering and its applications for heterogeneous catalysis, emphasizing chemistry at the gas/solid interface. It starts with an introduction to the theory of neutron scattering, with pros and cons for catalyst research, followed by a description of three main neutron scattering techniques: neutron diffraction (ND), inelastic neutron spectroscopy (INS), and quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS). It includes recent applications in each technique and then a short introduction of other neutron techniques that are less frequently used in the catalysis field. It ends with a summary and a future outlook.

High-energy x-ray diffraction microscopy study of deformation microstructures in neutron-irradiated polycrystalline Fe-9%Cr

In this paper, we used far-field high-energy x-ray diffraction microscopy (FF-HEDM) to measure in 3D the spatial distributions of the sizes, orientations, and residual strains of grains and subgrains formed by room-temperature tensile deformation in a neutron-irradiated (450 °C, 0.01dpa) Fe-9Cr specimen and its unirradiated counterpart. We found that neutron irradiation under this condition alone had no effect on the grain size distribution. After deformation, grains fragmented into subgrains in both unirradiated and irradiated specimens: the irradiated specimen contained a few large subgrains which co-existed with many smaller subgrains, while the unirradiated specimen contained small subgrains with a relatively uniform size distribution. Prior to deformation, the irradiated specimen had higher residual strain spread compared to its unirradiated counterpart, while after deformation to the maximum uniform elongation, the strain distributions among subgrains were similar between the unirradiated and irradiated specimens. The FF-HEDM measurements provide new insight into the effects of neutron irradiation on the mechanical response of Fe-Cr ferritic alloys.

Multi-scale structural analysis of swift heavy ion-irradiated ZrO 2 and HfO 2

The radiation-induced monoclinic-to-tetragonal phase transition in ZrO 2 and HfO 2 has been the subject of many investigations, but the transformation pathways and underlying structural mechanisms are still not well understood. In this study, microcrystalline powder samples of ZrO 2 and HfO 2 were irradiated with 946 MeV and 1470 MeV Au ions to a wide fluence range up to 3 × 10 13 ions/cm 2 . To characterize beam-induced structural modifications across all spatial length scales, complementary experimental techniques such as synchrotron X-ray diffraction and spallation neutron total scattering were used. The phase evolution of the tetragonal polymorph with increasing ion fluence is accurately described by a heterogeneous track-overlap model that incorporates both direct- and double-impact processes. These damage accumulation processes are an expression of a core-shell ion track morphology that depends on irradiation conditions and target material. Neutron pair distribution function analysis revealed that ion-beam-induced tetragonal ZrO 2 is merely a configurational average of short-range orthorhombic (Pbcn) domains stabilized by a dense network of domain walls. Furthermore, this knowledge is critical for a better understanding of how crystalline-to-crystalline phase transformations proceed at the atomic scale under extreme conditions.

Pressure-induced modifications of the magnetic order in the spin-chain compound C a 3 C o 2 O 6

The structural and magnetic properties of the Ca 3 Co 2 O 6 spin-chain compound have been studied by means of neutron and x-ray powder diffraction at pressures up to 6.8 and 32 GPa, respectively. A suppression of the initial spin-density wave state (T N = 25 K) and stabilization of the collinear commensurate antiferromagnetic (AFM) state at high pressures (T NC = 26 K at P = 2.1 GPa) were observed. The pressure behavior of the competing intra- and interchain magnetic interactions was analyzed on the basis of obtained structural data and their role in the formation of the magnetic phase diagram is discussed. Here, the pressure behavior of the Néel temperature of the commensurate AFM phase was evaluated within the mean field theory approach and a good agreement with the experimental value dT NC /dP = 0.65 K/GPa was obtained.

Floating zone crystal growth, structure, and properties of a cubic Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 garnet-type lithium-ion conductor

As a promising candidate for solid-state electrolytes in Li-ion batteries, the garnet-type Li-ion conductor series Li 5+x La 3 Nb 2-x Zr x O 12 (LLNZO) (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) exhibits high ionic conductivity at room temperature. However, no previous single-crystal growth or characterization has been reported for LLNZO compositions 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. To obtain a complete understanding of the trend in the structure–property relationship in this class of materials, we used the floating zone (FZ) method to grow a single crystal of Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 that was 4 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length. Using Laue neutron single-crystal diffraction, two distinct Li sites were observed: tetrahedral 24d and octahedral 96h sites. The maximum entropy method (MEM) based on neutron single-crystal diffraction data was used to map Li nuclear density and estimate that the bottleneck of Li transport exists between neighboring tetrahedral and octahedral sites, and that Li is delocalized between split octahedral sites. Room-temperature Li-ion conductivity in Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 measured with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was 1.37 × 10 -4 S cm -1 . The Li migration activation energy was estimated to be 0.50 eV from EIS and 0.47 eV from dielectric relaxation measurements. The Li-ion jump attempt rate was estimated to be 1.47 × 10 12 Hz while the time scale of successful migration is 10 -7 to 10 -6 s.

A flexible neutron spectrometer concept with a new ultra-high field steady-state vertical-bore magnet

The proposed facility explores materials under ultra-high magnetic fields. By combining the power of high fields to tune materials and of neutron scattering to probe the resulting changes down to the atomic scale, this facility will enable transformative progress in the study of quantum materials and is named for the “TITAN” subset of Greek gods to reflect this transformation. TITAN will offer DC magnetic fields up to at least 20 T. Exploiting the record brightness and bandwidth of the Second Target Station at the Spallation Neutron Source, TITAN will probe atomic-scale responses through high efficiency neutron spectroscopy up to 80 meV energy transfer, high resolution diffraction, and small angle neutron scattering. Focusing neutron optics will maximize flux on accurately positioned samples, while radial collimation and optimized shielding and detection strategies will minimize backgrounds.

Exceptional Packing Density of Ammonia in a Dual-Functionalized Metal–Organic Framework

We report the reversible adsorption of ammonia (NH 3 ) up to 9.9 mmol g -1 in a robust Al-based metal-organic framework, MFM-303(Al), which is functionalized with free carboxylic acid and hydroxyl groups. The unique pore environment decorated with these acidic sites results in an exceptional packing density of NH 3 at 293 K (0.801 g cm -3 ) comparable to that of solid NH 3 at 193 K (0.817 g cm-3 ). In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering reveal the critical role of free -COOH and -OH groups in immobilizing NH 3 molecules. Breakthrough experiments confirm the excellent performance of MFM-303(Al) for the capture of NH 3 at low concentrations under both dry and wet conditions.
