Comparative radiation resistance calculation for graded- and constant-composition n Al/x/Ga/1-x/As-p Al/z/Ga/1-z/As solar cells

The performance and radiation resistance of a new double-graded-band-gap solar cell are theoretically determined. The performance of this device is similar to that of the single-graded-band-gap cell. The power-conversion efficiencies of both graded-band-gap structures are shown to be less sensitive to minority-carrier lifetime degradation than a similar constant-composition heteroface cell.

Initial evaluation tests of General Electric Company 26.5 ampere-hour nickel-cadmium spacecraft cells with auxiliary electrodes for the TIROS-N and NOAA-A satellites

This evaluation test program had the purpose to insure that all cells put into the life cycle program are of high quality by the screening of cells found to have electrolyte leakage, internal shorts, low capacity, or inability of any cell to recover its open-circuit voltage above 1.150 volts during the internal short test. Test limits specify those values at which a cell is to be terminated from charge or discharge. Requirements are referenced to as normally expected values based on past performance of aerospace nickel-cadmium cells with demonstrated life characteristics. A requirement does not constitute a limit for discontinuance from test.

The list of the stars from the Two-micron sky survey: A preliminary catalog by G. N. Neugebauer et al (IRC), the identification of which is not correct

Two tables are published. The first presents the numbers of stars according to the Catalog IRC for which all or part of the identification with the Catalogs BS-HR, GC or DM is incorrect. The second table presents the numbers of stars in the IRC catalog, for which the identifications with variable stars printed with them are erroneous, whereas other identifications are usually correct.

Electrical Characterization of Hughes HCMP 1853D and RCA CDP1853D N-bit, CMOS, 1-of-8 Decoder Microcircuits

Electrical characterization tests were performed on two different manufactured types of integrated circuits. The devices were subjected to functional and AC and DC parametric tests at ambient temperatures of -55 C, -20 C, 25 C, 85 C, and 125 C. The data were analyzed and tabulated to show the effect of operating conditions on performance and to indicate parameter deviations among devices in each group. Accuracy was given precedence over test time efficiency where practical, and tests were designed to measure worst case performance.

Phase 1 of the First Solar Small Power System Experiment (experimental System No. 1). Volume 3: Appendix E - N

The design of a solar electric power plant for a small community is reported. Topics covered include: (1) control configurations and interface requirements for the baseline power system; (2) annual small power system output; (3) energy requirements for operation of the collectors and control building; (4) life cycle costs and reliability predictions; (5) thermal conductivities and costs of receiver insulation materials; (6) transient thermal modelling for the baseline receiver/thermal transport system under normal and inclement operating conditions; (7) high temperature use of sodium; (8) shading in a field of parabolic collectors; and (9) buffer storage materials.

Synthetic Aperture Radar Technology Conference, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, N. Mex., March 8-10, 1978, Proceedings

The following aspects of SAR development are discussed: calibration techniques, image simulation and interpretability, antennas, data processing, and system design. Papers are presented on such topics as a postlaunch calibration experiment for the Seasat-A SAR, computer simulation of an orbital SAR system, definition study of the Shuttle Imaging Radar, custom LSI circuits for spaceborne SAR processors, and random sampling adaptively focusing SAR.

Measurements of pulse-height defect in Au-Si detectors for H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Ar, Kr from about 2 to 400 keV/nucleon

We report measurements of pulse-height defects in Si surface-barrier detectors for a variety of ions and energies. We find: (1) for ions up to Ne our measurements agree remarkably well with calculations based on energy loss and nuclear defect theory, (2) for heavier ions we find systematic deviations, (3) there is no evidence of a dead layer at the Si-Au interface, and (4) our measurements are consistently reproducible for detectors fabricated in our laboratory.

The Mars opposition effect at 20 deg N. latitude and 20 deg W. longitude

Low phase angle observations in the Chryse-Acidalia region have been obtained by the Viking Orbiter 1 spacecraft under clearer atmospheric conditions than reported earlier. A variety of surface features were recorded, e.g., crater streaks, dark and bright patches. Several findings for this scene include: an abrupt brightness increase (10%) was found at phase angles less than 3 deg, an effect dependent on surface albedo and possibly particle distribution; a slight weakening of reflectance surge with decreasing wavelengths; a larger opposition effect for features of high albedo was recorded; and a greater reddening with increased phase angle took place for low albedo regions. Both reflectance and contrast values are provided at three wavelengths as a function of phase angle from 0.15 to 20 deg.

Annual Conference on Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects, 15th, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, N. Mex., July 18-21, 1978, Proceedings

Radiation effects in MOS devices and circuits are considered along with radiation effects in materials, space radiation effects and spacecraft charging, SGEMP, IEMP, EMP, fabrication of radiation-hardened devices, radiation effects in bipolar devices and circuits, simulation, energy deposition, and dosimetry. Attention is given to the rapid anneal of radiation-induced silicon-sapphire interface charge trapping, cosmic ray induced errors in MOS memory cells, a simple model for predicting radiation effects in MOS devices, the response of MNOS capacitors to ionizing radiation at 80 K, trapping effects in irradiated and avalanche-injected MOS capacitors, inelastic interactions of electrons with polystyrene, the photoelectron spectral yields generated by monochromatic soft X radiation, and electron transport in reactor materials.

Equations of motion for coupled n-body systems

Computer program, developed to analyze spacecraft attitude dynamics, can be applied to large class of problems involving objects that can be simplified into component parts. Systems of coupled rigid bodies, point masses, symmetric wheels, and elastically flexible bodies can be analyzed. Program derives complete set of non-linear equations of motion in vectordyadic format. Numerical solutions may be printed out. Program is in FORTRAN IV for batch execution and has been implemented on IBM 360.
