Preliminary Evaluation of Joint Electricity-Hydrogen Concept of Operations

An initial thermal power dispatch (TPD) concept of operations was evaluated that couples a nuclear power plant to a nearby hydrogen production plant. GSE Systems’ generic pressurized water reactor full-scope simulator was modified with a TPD model comprised of a thermal power extraction and delivery system. A prototype human-system interface (HSI) was developed to interact with the TPD model and allow participants to execute the basic operating scenarios for normal operations. Four retired operators performed the evaluation, and due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the original in-person experimental design was restructured to support a remote participator evaluation using a web meeting platform. Data from operator feedback, observations from the research team, and quantitative survey responses revealed that the initial TPD concept of operations is feasible. The operators were comfortable with the engineered system and HSI and could manage it without adverse impacts to reactor power, plant safety, or equipment. Findings are discussed in terms of both the TPD system design and HSI performance.

An Adaptive Virtual Oscillator Control Structure for Grid-Forming Inverters

The electrical grid is facing unprecedented challenges due to the increasing penetration of inverter-based resources. Grid forming inverters (GFMIs) are a promising technology to address these challenges. Recently, the virtual oscillator based GFMI control is attracting more attention due to its superior performance over other control strategies. In this article, an adaptive control strategy is proposed to provide flexible operation and transition between grid-connected and islanded modes. The controller adapts the virtual oscillator's parameter values depending on the operation mode. It also provides a feedback signal using a measured frequency to account for any steady-state errors and to allow a seamless transition from grid-connected to islanded mode. Finally, to show the feasibility of the proposed controller, this article discusses the simulation results from the implementation of the controller on a single inverter system and on a group of inverters on a large practical utility feeder, the IEEE 13 node feeder, using the DIgSILENT simulation environment.

Converged Computing: A Best of Both Worlds of High-Performance Computing and Cloud

Collaboration between Cloud and High Performance Computing (HPC) communities has accelerated in the last half decade. A common goal to run batch workloads combined with a desire for reproducibility, automation, and optimization has led to successful projects that range from container technologies to workload management and security. This span of current and future work defines a novel “Converged Computing” paradigm that aims to combine the best of both worlds, both from a technological and cultural standpoint. Furthermore, in this Special Issue, we review common themes in the space, showcasing current work and encouraging a continued effort toward innovative ideas that will enable the next generations of scientific discovery.

Gemma

Gemma is a linear electromagnetic code developed at Sandia National Laboratories based on the method of moments in the frequency domain, with the objective of supporting next-generation high-performance computing (HPC) platforms. Gemma provides full-wave computational electromagnetic modeling. As an example, Gemma models electromagnetic radiation (EMR) environments, including those resulting from radar (both hostile and friendly) and high-power-electromagnetic (HPEM) sources. Gemma refers to a suite of source code and scripts that aid in compiling, running, and testing the primary Gemma executable, which can be compiled for diverse platforms including CPUs, GPUs, and MICs by leveraging Sandia's Kokkos library.SAND2019-15221 M Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

miniGAN: a proxy application for generative adversarial networks

miniGAN is a python-based machine learning proxy application for generative adversarial networks, developed through the Exascale Computing Project's (ECP) ExaLearn project. It will be included in the main ECP proxy application and the machine learning proxy application suite. It is a proxy for ECP cosmological(CosmoFlow, ExaGAN) and wind energy(ExaWind) applications. miniGAN will be distributed to ECP hardware vendors as part of hardware codesign. miniGAN uses the Numpy/PyTorch/TensorFlow/Keras/Horovod frameworks and libraries. It also relies on the Kokkos and Kokkos-Kernels packages developed here at Sandia Labs. Java Software Extensibility Library

The Java Software Extensibility Library provides tools that help Java software developers produce flexible and extensible Java applications. The major components include a Plugin Library and a Polymorphic Map data structure. The Plugin Library provides developers with a Plugin Registry and a standard pattern for designing, versioning, registering, retrieving, and annotating plugins. It also enables advanced capabilities such as loading plugins at runtime, and creating/loading encrypted plugin packages. The Polymorphic Map data structure facilitates the storage and retrieval of objects of varying types within a single data structure; while maintaining type safety. The library also provides a standard design pattern for producing application-specific "Domain Maps" and "Closed Domain Maps".SAND2020-3816 M Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.
