Specification of parameters for development of a spatial database for drought monitoring and famine early warning in the African Sahel

Parameters were described for spatial database to facilitate drought monitoring and famine early warning in the African Sahel. The proposed system, referred to as the African Drought and Famine Information System (ADFIS) is ultimately recommended for implementation with the NASA/FEMA Spatial Analysis and Modeling System (SAMS), a GIS/Dymanic Modeling software package, currently under development. SAMS is derived from FEMA'S Integration Emergency Management Information System (IEMIS) and the Pacific Northwest Laborotory's/Engineering Topographic Laboratory's Airland Battlefield Environment (ALBE) GIS. SAMS is primarily intended for disaster planning and resource management applications with the developing countries. Sources of data for the system would include the Developing Economics Branch of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, the World Bank, Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine's Famine Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Project, the USAID's Foreign Disaster Assistance Section, the World Resources Institute, the World Meterological Institute, the USGS, the UNFAO, UNICEF, and the United Nations Disaster Relief Organization (UNDRO). Satellite imagery would include decadal AVHRR imagery and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values from 1981 to the present for the African continent and selected Landsat scenes for the Sudan pilot study. The system is initially conceived for the MicroVAX 2/GPX, running VMS. To facilitate comparative analysis, a global time-series database (1950 to 1987) is included for a basic set of 125 socio-economic variables per country per year. A more detailed database for the Sahelian countries includes soil type, water resources, agricultural production, agricultural import and export, food aid, and consumption. A pilot dataset for the Sudan with over 2,500 variables from the World Bank's ANDREX system, also includes epidemiological data on incidence of kwashiorkor, marasmus, other nutritional deficiencies, and synergistically-related infectious diseases.

Upper atmosphere dynamics

The spatial distribution of stratospheric ozone is useful in diagnosis of some features of the large scale atmospheric circulation, and the ozone may also interact with the atmospheric general circulation. Local maxima in the column ozone distribution are often associated with disturbances in the lower stratosphere and upper troposphere, which may herald cyclone development in the troposphere. One research objective is to explore these issues by means of time series analysis of a zonal index of total column ozone, to suggest the existence or nonexistence of relationships between column ozone and dynamical processes which are known to occur on various time scales. Another objective is to investigate the correlation between the ozone mixing ratio on the 350 K isentropic surface and the column integrated ozone, and to investigate the use of an easily derived parameter as a proxy for ozone mixing ratio, which is conserved in the stratosphere for time scales shorter than the photochemical time scale. The source of data for these studies is the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) data set.

Databases for LDEF results

One of the objectives of the team supporting the LDEF Systems and Materials Special Investigative Groups is to develop databases of experimental findings. These databases identify the hardware flown, summarize results and conclusions, and provide a system for acknowledging investigators, tracing sources of data, and future design suggestions. To date, databases covering the optical experiments, and thermal control materials (chromic acid anodized aluminum, silverized Teflon blankets, and paints) have been developed at Boeing. We used the Filemaker Pro software, the database manager for the Macintosh computer produced by the Claris Corporation. It is a flat, text-retrievable database that provides access to the data via an intuitive user interface, without tedious programming. Though this software is available only for the Macintosh computer at this time, copies of the databases can be saved to a format that is readable on a personal computer as well. Further, the data can be exported to more powerful relational databases, capabilities, and use of the LDEF databases and describe how to get copies of the database for your own research.

Description, analysis and impact of major solar activity during recent U.S. Shuttle missions

Since STS-26, three large solar events have occurred during Shuttle missions: a geomagnetic storm during STS-29 and solar particle events (SPEs) during STS-28 and -34. The maximum dose to a crew attributed to an SPE was estimated to be 30 micro-Gy. Time-resolved dosimetry measurements of the SPE dose during STS-28 were made using the USAF Radiation Monitoring Equipment. Comparison of calculated and measured dose demonstrated a discrepancy, possibly a result of deficiencies in the geomagnetic cutoff model used. This experience demonstrates that dose from an SPE is strongly dependent on numerous factors such as orbit inclination, SPE start time, spectral parameters and geomagnetic field conditions; the exact combination of these factors is fortuitous. New sources of data and procedures are being investigated, including real-time tracking of auroral oval positions or determination of particle cutoff latitudes, for incorporation into operational Shuttle radiation support practices.

Hardware scaleup procedures for P/C life support systems

This paper compares scaleup correlations developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and at the Langley Research Center for various life-support hardware to estimate mass, volume, and power-consumption values as a function of feed or product-mass flow rates. The scaleup correlations are provided for a few selected advanced life-support technologies developed for the Space Station Freedom. In addition, correlation-validity limits and sources of data on various life-support hardware are also discussed.

Comparison of SSM/I measurements to numerically-simulated cloud and precipitation during ERICA

The relationship between the moisture fields and the cyclone event that occurred on January 4-5, 1989 over Atlantic was investigated using preliminary 140-km and 70-km simulations of this cyclone, generated by a 3D version of the Drexel LAMPS, along with digital imagery from the SSM/I sensor. As the source of data, a sounding data set was obtained from the Experiment for Rapidly Intensifying Cyclones over the Atlantic (ERICA) Data Center. It was found that the 70-km integration produces a realistic moisture and cloud field as judged against passive microwave and IR imagery.

Toxicological implications of extended space flights

This paper draws attention to the needs and mechanisms for shielding crewmembers on long-duration space flights from hazards related to chemical toxicants. Specific attention is given to existing data on sources of impaired performance, namely, neurotoxicants, respiratory infections, pulmonary function. The behavioral effects associated with long-term exposure to volatile organic solvents can impair crucial functional parameters of space flight and mission objectives. Respiratory infections contribute to performance decrements of up to 20 percent, and pulmonary function can be impaired by contaminants such as ozone leading to reduced performance. It is concluded that these and other sources of toxicologically induced performance reductions be studied since they impinge on vehicle design and mission objectives.

Newly identified main-sequence A stars with circumstellar dust

The IRAS Faint Source Survey data base and the ADDSCAN/SCANPI software are used to search for systems with circumstellar dust in two samples: all of the 62 A stars in Woolley's catalog, which lie near the main sequence and are typically within 25 pc of the sun, and all A stars in the Bright Star Catalogue with mV in the range 4-5 and v sin i not less than 100 km/s. In the first sample, 11 nearby A stars having (12)-(25) and (25)-(60) colors consistent with circumstellar dust are found. The analysis of the second sample demonstrates that the use of the FSS data base increases the likelihood of identifying A stars with circumstellar dust fainter than mV = 4. Three more new dusty systems are found in this sample. Beta Pictoris (A5 IV-V) is the only star within 25 pc of the sun that displays IR colors indicative of both warm and cool dust. It is inferred from the absence of cool dust in the vast majority of the systems that the dust disks of these stars are much less extended than that seen around Beta Pictoris.

Trial maneuver generation and selection in the paladin tactical decision generation system

To date, increased levels of maneuverability and controllability in aircraft have been postulated as tactically advantageous, but little research has studied maneuvers or tactics that make use of these capabilities. In order to help fill this void, a real-time tactical decision generation system for air combat engagements, Paladin, has been developed. Paladin models an air combat engagement as a series of discrete decisions. A detailed description of Paladin's decision making process is presented. This includes the sources of data used, methods of generating reasonable maneuvers for the Paladin aircraft, and selection criteria for choosing the 'best' maneuver. Simulation results are presented that show Paladin to be relatively insensitive to errors introduced into the decision process by estimation of future positional and geometric data.

Modem Handles Data At 160 Mb/s

Trellis-coded octal-phase-shift-keying modem transmits and receives continuous or bursted digital data for satellite applications. Helps satisfy increasing demands for communication of high-speed digital data from sources like high-performance computers and high-definition television transmitters, as well as multiplexed signals from slower signal sources. Increases maximum effective bit rate accommodated in standard 72-MHz-wide commercial satellite-transponder radio channel from 120 Mb/s to 160 Mb/s. Principal advantages: spectral efficiency and power efficiency.

Design of an automated imaging system for use in a space experiment

An experiment, occurring in an orbiting platform, examines the mass transfer across gas-liquid and liquid-liquid interfaces. It employs an imaging system with real time image analysis. The design includes optical design, imager selection and integration, positioner control, image recording, software development for processing and interfaces to telemetry. It addresses the constraints of weight, volume, and electric power associated with placing the experiment in the Space Shuttle cargo bay. Challenging elements of the design are: imaging and recording of a 200-micron-diameter bubble with a resolution of 2 microns to serve a primary source of data; varying frame rates from 500 per second to 1 frame per second, depending on the experiment phase; and providing three-dimensional information to determine the shape of the bubble.

A Preliminary Study of Flame Propagation in a Spark-ignition Engine

The N.A.C.A. combustion apparatus was altered to operate as a fuel-injection, spark-ignition engine, and a preliminary study was made of the combustion of gasoline-air mixtures at various air-fuel ratios. Air-fuel ratios ranging from 10 to 21.6 were investigated. Records from an optical indicator and films from a high-speed motion-picture camera were the chief sources of data. Schlieren photography was used for an additional study. The results show that the altered combustion apparatus has characteristics similar to those of a conventional spark-ignition engine and should be useful in studying phenomena in spark-ignition engines. The photographs show the flame front to be irregularly shaped rather than uniformly curved. With a theoretically correct mixture the reaction, as indicated by the photographs, is not completed in the flame front but continues for some time after the combustion front has traversed the mixture.

New technology and regional studies in human ecology: A Papua New Guinea example

Two key issues in using technologies such as digital image processing and geographic information systems are a conceptually and methodologically valid research design and the exploitation of varied sources of data. With this realized, the new technologies offer anthropologists the opportunity to test hypotheses about spatial and temporal variations in the features of interest within a regionally coherent mosaic of social groups and landscapes. Current research on the Mountain OK of Papua New Guinea is described with reference to these issues.

Studying Venus using a GIS database

A Geographic Information System (GIS) can significantly enhance geological studies on Venus because it facilitates concurrent analysis of many sources of data, as demonstrated by our work on topographic and deformation characteristics of tesserae. We are creating a database of structures referenced to real-world coordinates to encourage the archival of Venusian studies in digital format and to foster quantitative analysis of many combinations of data. Contributions to this database from all aspects of Venusian science are welcome.

Multi-channel spatialization systems for audio signals

Synthetic head related transfer functions (HRTF's) for imposing reprogrammable spatial cues to a plurality of audio input signals included, for example, in multiple narrow-band audio communications signals received simultaneously are generated and stored in interchangeable programmable read only memories (PROM's) which store both head related transfer function impulse response data and source positional information for a plurality of desired virtual source locations. The analog inputs of the audio signals are filtered and converted to digital signals from which synthetic head related transfer functions are generated in the form of linear phase finite impulse response filters. The outputs of the impulse response filters are subsequently reconverted to analog signals, filtered, mixed, and fed to a pair of headphones.

A CCD antiblooming technique for use in photometry

A new antiblooming technique was used to collect images for a BL Lac monitoring project. The antiblooming was accomplished by clocking two of the collection phases (in a three-phase chip) back and forth during the integration of an image. Calibrations were done using VRI standard stars to insure that the technique did not affect normal photon collection and photometric data. New sources of noise were identified which must be subtracted from the processed imaging. In contrast, the technique reduced dark current noise, which is of benefit with a thermoelectric-cooled camera. The technique eliminated blooming across the stars of interest, while preserving photon-collection efficiency. It also reduced the total noise of the exposures.
