Instrumentation complex for Langley Research Center's National Transonic Facility

The instrumentation discussed in the present paper was developed to ensure reliable operation for a 2.5-meter cryogenic high-Reynolds-number fan-driven transonic wind tunnel. It will incorporate four CPU's and associated analog and digital input/output equipment, necessary for acquiring research data, controlling the tunnel parameters, and monitoring the process conditions. Connected in a multipoint distributed network, the CPU's will support data base management and processing; research measurement data acquisition and display; process monitoring; and communication control. The design will allow essential processes to continue, in the case of major hardware failures, by switching input/output equipment to alternate CPU's and by eliminating nonessential functions. It will also permit software modularization by CPU activity and thereby reduce complexity and development time.

Use of change detection in assessing development plans - A Philippine example

An aircraft/Landsat change-detection study conducted 1948-1972 on Marinduque Province, Republic of the Philippines, is discussed, and a procedure using both remote sensing and information systems for collection, spatial analysis, and display of periodic data is described. Each of the 4,008 25-hectare cells representing Marinduque were observed, and changes in and between variables were measured and tested using nonparametric statistics to determine the effect of specific land cover changes. Procedures using Landsat data to obtain a more continuous updating of the data base are considered. The system permits storage and comparison of historical and current data.

A comparison of contour maps derived from independent methods of measuring lunar magnetic fields

Computer-generated contour maps of strong lunar remanent magnetic fields are presented and discussed. The maps, obtained by previously described (Eliason and Soderblom, 1977) techniques, are derived from a variety of direct and indirect measurements from Apollo 15 and 16 and Explorer 35 magnetometer and electron reflection data. A common display format is used to facilitate comparison of the maps over regions of overlapping coverage. Most large scale features of either weak or strong magnetic field regions are found to correlate fairly well on all the maps considered.

Numerical prediction of 3-D ejector flows

The use of parametric flow analysis, rather than parametric scale testing, to support the design of an ejector system offers a number of potential advantages. The application of available 3-D flow analyses to the design ejectors can be subdivided into several key elements. These are numerics, turbulence modeling, data handling and display, and testing in support of analysis development. Experimental and predicted jet exhaust for the Boeing 727 aircraft are examined.

Scheduler software for tracking and data relay satellite system loading analysis: User manual and programmer guide

A user guide and programmer documentation is provided for a system of PRIME 400 minicomputer programs. The system was designed to support loading analyses on the Tracking Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). The system is a scheduler for various types of data relays (including tape recorder dumps and real time relays) from orbiting payloads to the TDRSS. Several model options are available to statistically generate data relay requirements. TDRSS time lines (representing resources available for scheduling) and payload/TDRSS acquisition and loss of sight time lines are input to the scheduler from disk. Tabulated output from the interactive system includes a summary of the scheduler activities over time intervals specified by the user and overall summary of scheduler input and output information. A history file, which records every event generated by the scheduler, is written to disk to allow further scheduling on remaining resources and to provide data for graphic displays or additional statistical analysis.

High-resolution LDA measurements of Reynolds stress in boundary layers and wakes

The turbulent character of the boundary layer and wake associated with an airfoil has been studied at a Reynolds number of 1,000,000 and a Mach number of 0.1. To accomplish these measurements, a unique laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) has been developed that is capable of sensing two velocity components from a remote distance of 2.13 m. Using special simultaneity logic and counter-type signal processors, the geometrical features of the LDA have been exploited to provide variable spatial resolution as low as 0.2 mm. By combining the LDA with an on-line computerized data acquisition and display system, it has been possible to measure mean velocity and Reynolds stress tensor distribution at several locations along the upper surface of a 0.9-m-chord, flapped airfoil installed in the Ames 7- by 10-Foot Wind Tunnel.

Attitude tracker

Line array sensors produce data which has no inherent geometrical continuity. Hence, any platform attitude variation will be evidenced as a distortion when the data lines are displayed in the normal Cartesian raster. Ancillary sensing is required to establish the platform attitude to allow geometric rectification. This is normally provided by inertial or star reference attitude sensors. However, in the absence of such sensors or if performance of them is degraded, the required attitude information is lost. A strawman sensor design is proposed which utilizes small image areas on the ground to provide a series of motion vectors with which the platform attitude can be tracked; this allows the distorted image received by the normal image line sensor to be rectified.

Ohio's Abandoned Mine Lands Reclamation Program: a Study of Data Collection and Evaluation Techniques

The planning process for a statewide reclamation plan of Ohio abandoned minelands in response to the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 included: (1) the development of a screening and ranking methodology; (2) the establishment of a statewide review of major watersheds affected by mining; (3) the development of an immediate action process; and (4) a prototypical study of a priority watershed demonstrating the data collection, analysis, display and evaluation to be used for the remaining state watersheds. Historical methods for satisfying map information analysis and evaluation, as well as current methodologies being used were discussed. Various computer mapping and analysis programs were examined for their usability in evaluating the priority reclamation sites. Hand methods were chosen over automated procedures; intuitive evaluation was the primary reason.

Computer graphic visualization of orbiter lower surface boundary-layer transition

Computer graphic techniques are applied to the processing of Shuttle Orbiter flight data in order to create a visual presentation of the extent and movement of the boundary-layer transition front over the orbiter lower surface during entry. Flight-measured surface temperature-time histories define the onset and completion of the boundary-layer transition process at any measurement location. The locus of points which define the spatial position of the boundary-layer transition front on the orbiter planform is plotted at each discrete time for which flight data are available. Displaying these images sequentially in real-time results in an animated simulation of the in-flight boundary-layer transition process.

Data selection techniques in the interpretation of MAGSAT data over Australia

The MAGSAT data require critical selection in order to produce a self-consistent data set suitable for map construction and subsequent interpretation. Interactive data selection techniques are described which involve the use of a special-purpose profile-oriented data base and a colour graphics display. The careful application of these data selection techniques permits validation every data value and ensures that the best possible self-consistent data set is being used to construct the maps of the magnetic field measured at satellite altitudes over Australia.

Geographic variation in the relationships of temperature, salinity or sigma sub t versus plant nutrient concentrations in the world ocean

A NODC data set representing all regions of the world ocean was analyzed for temperature and sigma-t relationships with nitrate, phosphate or silicic acid. Six cubic regressions were for each ten degree square of latitude and longitude containing adequate data. World maps display the locations that allow the prediction of plant nutrient concentrations from temperature or sigma-t. Geographic coverage improves along the sequence: nitrate, phosphate, and silicic acid and is better for sigma-t than for temperature. Contour maps of the approximate temperature of sigma-t at which these nitrients are no longer measurable in a parcel of water are generated, based on a percentile analysis of the temperature or sigma-t at which less than a selected amount of plant nutrient occurs. Results are stored on magnetic tape in tabular form. The global potential to predict plant nutrient concentrations from remotely sensed temperature of sigma-t and to emphasize the latitudinally and longitudinally changing phytoplankton growth environment in present and past oceans is demonstrated.

Energetic ion mass composition as observed at near-geosynchronous and low altitudes during the storm period of February 21 and 22, 1979

Mass composition data acquired during the storm period of February 21 and 22, 1979 are presented and analyzed. Near-geosynchronous data from the SCATHA spacecraft are described, giving the data in spectrogram format. Low-altitude data from the S3-3 spacecraft are presented, and it is shown that they raise questions concerning the evolution of the low-altitude, 0.5-16 keV/q plasma population after the main phase of magnetic storms. The importance of convection as an explanation of the signatures found in the low-altitude S3-3 data is considered. Some work concerning steady state convection models is summarized, pointing out those aspects of the theory relevant to the S3-3 data. Results from the theory are applied to those data, which are also displayed in spectrogram format. The results are discussed, using the geosynchronous composition data as a monitor of the source of the injected plasma.
