Modular Assembly of FTO|Chromophore-Catalyst Hierarchical Films Based on Strong Dipole Interactions

Here, we have designed and characterized modular self-assembled hierarchical films containing a molecular catalyst tethered to an anchoring molecule by means of dipole-induced dipole interactions. In order to do so, two new Co III -based molecular catalyst candidates were designed, namely, [Co III L 1 (pyrr) 2 ]ClO 4 (Co1) and [Co III L 2 (pyrr) 2 ]ClO 4 (Co2), where L 1 and L 2 are the respective deprotonated forms of N,N′-[4,5-bis(dodecyloxy)-1,2-phenylene]dipicolinamide and N,N′-[4,5-bis(methoxyethoxy)-1,2-phenylene]dipicolinamide and were characterized by electrochemical, electronic, and film formation properties. Species Co1 and Co2 were deposited onto an anchor molecule such as octylphosphonic acid (OPA) or the chromophoric [Ru II (bpy PO3H ) 2 (bpy C7 )]Cl 2 (Ru) previously attached onto conductive fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO). Four hierarchical films of the form substrate|anchor-catalyst were obtained, namely, FTO|OPA-Co1, FTO|OPA-Co2, FTO|Ru-Co1, and FTO|Ru-Co2, and the role of dipole-dipole interactions between anchor and catalyst modules was assessed. These newly synthesized hierarchical films were characterized by a host of surface-specific methods that include X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ellipsometry, X-ray fluorescence, and water contact angle, thus enabling an unprecedented level of analysis. Compared to the weak C-H van der Waals interactions exhibited by Co1, the presence of alkoxy chains in Co2 ensures stronger dipole-dipole interactions with the alkyl chain of the anchors due to O···H formation. The persistence of their redox properties, which include metal oxidation, and directionality of electron transport were probed suggesting direct relevance to catalytic processes such as water oxidation.

Strong Surface-Enhanced Coherent Phonon Generation in van der Waals Materials

Terahertz (THz) coherent phonons have emerged as promising candidates for the next generation of high-speed, low-energy information carriers in atomically thin phononic or phonon-integrated on-chip devices. However, effectively manipulating THz coherent phonons remains a significant challenge. Here, in this study, we investigated THz coherent phonon generation in exfoliated van der Waals (vdW) flakes of Fe 3 GeTe 2 , Fe 5 GeTe 2 , and FePS 3 . We successfully generated the THz A 1g coherent phonon mode in these vdW flakes. An innovative approach involved partially exfoliating vdW flakes on a gold substrate and partially on a silicon (Si) substrate to compare the THz coherent phonon generation between both sides. Interestingly, we observed a significantly enhanced THz coherent phonon in the vdW/gold area compared with that in the vdW/Si area. Frequency-domain Raman mapping across the vdW flakes corroborated these findings. Numerical simulations further indicated a stronger enhanced surface field in vdW/gold structures than in vdW/Si structures. Consequently, we attribute the observed enhancement in THz coherent phonon generation to the increased surface field on the gold substrate. This enhancement was consistent across the three different vdW materials studied, suggesting the universality of this strategy. Our results hold promise for advancing the design of THz phononic and phonon-integrated devices.

Stabilizing Ultrathin CsPbBr 3 Nanoplatelet Films for Deterministic Strong Light-Matter Coupling

While the excitons in perovskite nanomaterials possess interesting properties central to their use in optoelectronic technologies, their instability limits real world applicability. In this study, we describe a method to stabilize the structures of cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr 3 ) nanoplatelets (NPLs) in spin-casted films. We apply this method to design, fabricate, and characterize exciton cavity polaritons formed from these nanomaterials. These studies show that we can form exciton cavity polaritons from CsPbBr 3 in precisely designed Fabry−Perot microresonators and suggest that the structures of these materials can be stabilized toward their use in other solution-processed optoelectronic devices.

Quantification of Dispersion for Weakly and Strongly Correlated Nanofillers in Polymer Nanocomposites

The dispersion of nanoparticles in viscous polymers is dictated by kinetics, interaction potentials between particles, and interfacial compatibility between the matrix and dispersed phases. It was previously proposed that an analogy can be made between thermally dispersed colloids and kinetically dispersed nanoparticles in viscous media when weak interactions exist between particles allowing for a mean-field description under the Ginzburg criterion such as for carbon black dispersed in polybutadiene elastomer. For these cases, the second virial coefficient can be used to quantify the quality of dispersion; additionally, the nanoscale network mesh size can be calculated, which is related to dynamic properties. However, this approach fails for nanoparticles with surface charges or other specific interactions that lead to correlations. Here, these correlated systems are investigated in the context of the mean-field systems in order to gain a comparative description of dispersion using the network mesh size and a derived virial coefficient. The physical origin of the structural parameters from the proposed model for these correlated systems is investigated.

Charged Bosons Made of Fermions in Bilayer Structures with Strong Metallic Screening

Two-dimensional monolayer structures of transition metal dichalogenides (TMDs) have been shown to allow many higher-order excitonic bound states, including trions (charged excitons), biexcitons (excitonic molecules), and charged biexcitons. Here, we report here experimental evidence and the theoretical basis for a new bound excitonic complex, consisting of two free carriers bound to an exciton in a bilayer structure. Our experimental measurements on structures made using two different materials show a new spectral line at the predicted energy with two different TMD materials (MoSe 2 and WSe 2 ) with both n- and p-doping, if and only if all the required theoretical conditions for this complex are fulfilled, in particular, only in the presence of a parallel metal layer that significantly screens the repulsive interaction between the like-charge carriers. Because these four-carrier bound states are charged bosons, they could eventually be the basis for a new path to superconductivity without Cooper pairing.

Magnetic Effect of Dopants on Bright and Dark Excitons in Strongly Confined Mn-Doped CsPbI 3 Quantum Dots

We investigated the magnetic effect of Mn 2+ ions on an exciton of Mn-doped CsPbI 3 quantum dots (QDs), where we looked for the signatures of an exciton magnetic polaron known to produce a large effective magnetic field in Mn-doped CdSe QDs. In contrast to Mn-doped CdSe QDs that can produce ~100 T of magnetic field upon photoexcitation, manifested as a large change in the energy and relaxation dynamics of a bright exciton, Mn-doped CsPbI 3 QDs exhibited little influence of a magnetic dopant on the behavior of a bright exciton. Furthermore, a μs-lived dark exciton in CsPbI 3 QDs showed 40% faster decay in the presence of Mn 2+ , equivalent to the effect of ~3 T of an external magnetic field. While further study is necessary to fully understand the origin of the large difference in the magneto-optic property of an exciton in two systems, we consider that the difference in antiferromagnetic coupling of the dopants is an important contributing factor.

Multifunctional Silk Fibroin Hydrogels with Strong Adhesion for Tissue Sealing and Wearable Electronic Sensors

Multifunctional hydrogels with excellent adhesion, biodegradability, and conductivity are essential for overcoming the obstacles of postoperative secondary injury, flexible sensing instability, and so on. Herein, we develop a multifunctional silk fibroin (SF) hydrogel modified with poly(acrylic acid). Owing to the stable chemical cross-linking network and the abundant carboxylic acid groups of the SF network, the SF hydrogel exhibits a high tensile strength of 74.34 kPa due to sufficient cohesion and interfacial interactions. Additionally, the tensile strain reaches a maximum of 414.6%, the compressive strength is 0.9 MPa, and the shear adhesive strength for pig skin tissues is as high as 64 kPa. Compared with most hydrogels, our multifunctional SF hydrogel with a low swelling ratio provides excellent adhesion, biodegradation, and conductivity, which shows advantages in terms of invasive tissue sealing. Furthermore, the use of self-adhesive SF hydrogels as conductive hydrogels in flexible sensors also benefits the collection of physiological electricity and human motion signals in the field of wearable and implantable electronic devices.
