Carbon fiber production at low temperatures from polyacrylonitrile

Recent safety considerations have sought to lower the electrical conductivity of carbon fibers. Carbon fibers produced from polyacrylonitrile at low carbonization temperatures (600-900 C) possess low electrical conductivity but do not possess adequate strength. Low-temperature processes are described which improve fiber strength but do not increase electrical conductivity substantially. The processes result in a carbon fiber with nearly twice the tensile strength compared to the old process. Process development and its effect on fiber properties are reported.

The challenges of manufacturing graphite-epoxy structural columns for space platforms

A description is given of the manufacturing processes developed for large-quantity production of space structure graphite/epoxy composite tubes. The tubes are to be delivered to orbit by the Space Shuttle and assembled by astronaut-assisted assembly machines. The tooling and manufacturing system uses a novel method of dry fiber placement which carefully controls fiber position and orientation and a non-autoclave cure for the epoxy resin. The means of dimensional tolerance control over differential thermal expansion between metal tooling and graphite tubes, resin shrinkage during cure, hot pressurized resins in close tolerance tooling, and tool wear, are examined in detail. A successful pilot production program is also reported.

Charging control techniques

Transparent conductive thin films of indium oxide and indium-tin oxide were evaluated for their properties to control charge buildup on satellite materials. Both oxide coatings were evaluated for their uniformity, stability, reproducibility and characteristics on various substrate materials such as FEP Teflon, Kapton, and glass. The process development toward optimization and characterization of these thin semiconductor oxide coatings and the evaluation on large sizes performed for qualification for use on thermal control satellite materials is described. The materials have been characterized in multiple energy electron plasma environment and at low temperatures. All radiation measurements of the coatings under simulated substorm conditions have exhibited the characteristics of stable charge control. Measurement of surface potential during and after irradiation by electrons up to 30 KeV and ionizing gamma radiation show an effective stable grounding surface.

Study of phenomena related to the sintering process of silicon nitride at atmospheric pressure

A procedure was perfected for the production of components used in engineering applications of silicon nitride. Particles of complex geometry that combine remarkable mechanical properties with a high density are obtained. The process developed, in contrast to the "hot pressing" method, does not use external pressures, and in contrast to the reaction bonding method, final densities close to the theoretical value are obtained.

Relations between information system engineering and software engineering

This paper examines some of the relations between information system engineering and software engineering. A model for the development process of an information system is presented that focuses on problems common to both disciplines. The concepts of complexity, multiplicity of view, distortion in communication, and concurrency and iteration in implementation are treated. A set of design constructs for the description of an information system is presented. The role of project management is treated. The issue of how to characterize requirements analysis is answered by making it a design activity from the point of view of a user of the product system.

Silicon crystal growth in vacuum

The most developed process for silicon crystal growth is the Czochralski (CZ) method which was in production for over two decades. In an effort to reduce cost of single crystal silicon for photovoltaic applications, a directional solidification technique, Heat Exchanger Method (HEM), was adapted. Materials used in HEM and CZ furnaces are quite similar (heaters, crucibles, insulation, etc.). To eliminate the cost of high purity argon, it was intended to use vacuum operation in HEM. Two of the major problems encountered in vacuum processing of silicon are crucible decomposition and silicon carbide formation in the melt.

Small Gas Turbine Combustor Primary Zone Study

A development process is described which consists of design, fabrication, and preliminary test evaluations of three approaches to internal aerodynamic primary zone flow patterns: (1) conventional double vortex swirl stabilization; (2) reverse flow swirl stabilization; and (3) large single vortex flow system. Each concept incorporates special design features aimed at extending the performance capability of the small engine combustor. Since inherent geometry of these combustors result in small combustion zone height and high surface area to volume ratio, design features focus on internal aerodynamics, fuel placement, and advanced cooling. The combustors are evaluated on a full scale annular combustor rig. A correlation of the primary zone performance with the overall performance is accomplished using three intrusion type gas sampling probes located at the exit of the primary zone section. Empirical and numerical methods are used for designing and predicting the performance of the three combustor concepts and their subsequent modifications. The calibration of analytical procedures with actual test results permits an updating of the analytical design techniques applicable to small reverse flow annular combustors.

NASA space power system automation

Investigations were conducted with the objective to identify technology issues in automating space power systems, rank critical technology needs, and recommend technology objectives. It was found that automation can offer significant benefits to space power systems. Automation, or even autonomy, may become an absolute requirement for system implementation. Automation of large power systems will be achieved through evolution. It is pointed out that 'systems engineering' or more specifically, 'automation systems engineering' must be strongly emphasized and done early in the development process. System control can be centralized, distributed or a combination of the two. An important requirement for automation implementation is related to the availability of qualified hardware and software components.

Three-dimensional algebraic grid generation

One of the major approaches to numerical grid generation is the explicit algebraic expression of a physical grid as a function of a uniform grid in a rectangular computational coordinate system. The algebraic methods are based on mathematical interpolation, and the primary advantages are speed and directness. The relation between interpolation and grid generation is described. For three-dimensional grid generation, transfinite interpolation using the coordinate control processes developed in the multisurface method and two-boundary technique are advocated. Grid singularities encountered in three dimensions are discussed, and the exploration of multiple overlapping grids is proposed. Some aspects of interactive algebraic grid computation in three dimensions are discussed.

Testing and error analysis of a real-time controller

Inexpensive ways to organize and conduct system testing that were used on a real-time satellite network control system are outlined. This system contains roughly 50,000 lines of executable source code developed by a team of eight people. For a small investment of staff, the system was thoroughly tested, including automated regression testing, before field release. Detailed records were kept for fourteen months, during which several versions of the system were written. A separate testing group was not established, but testing itself was structured apart from the development process. The errors found during testing are examined by frequency per subsystem by size and complexity as well as by type. The code was released to the user in March, 1983. To date, only a few minor problems found with the system during its pre-service testing and user acceptance has been good.

AFTI/F-16 DFCS development summary - A report to industry multimode control law design

The primary goal of the AFTI/F-16 program is to develop a reliable triplex digital multimode flight control system; this system is to be tailored to optimize fighter performance and capable of six-degree-of-freedom decoupled aircraft control. The multiple digital control law configurations arrived at through flight testing are presented. The changes in these designs from the results of flight tests establish that flight testing is an integral part of the development process. The flight test results are analyzed here from the standpoint of pilot comments and resulting control law design modifications.
