Comparing Synthetic Routes and Thermal Characteristics of Alternate APO Variants

Low density, high-strength, temperature-resistant foams see widespread application in the aerospace and weapons fields due to their excellent qualities as structural supports. In these demanding environments, the most common formulation is a three-phase syntactic foam containing APOCure-601, BMI, and carbon or glass microballoons. Of these, APOCure-601 and BMI form the polymer resin amino-poly(oxadiazole) bismaleimide (APO-BMI), also known as Legacy APO or S-1,2-Ethyl-APO. In manufacturing this foam, the selective laser sintering (SLS) additive manufacturing technique is quickly gaining prominence, over more traditional injection molding since SLS allows for 3D printing of materials and reduces overall cost and waste production. That said, SLS also requires a narrow window between the melt and cure temperatures for a successful print. SLS printing of APO-BMI is therefore difficult since the compound possesses a broad window between its melting and curing temperatures, and also requires several post-cure steps or complete polymerization. This work explores synthesis optimization and thermal characteristics for variant Apo-BMI structures by observing the effect that alternative heteroatoms in the APO linkages, geometries 0f the BMI groups, and bridge structure identities impart on the resultant material. Synthetic methods for these altered structures were established in batch, with some others further converted to continuous flow chemistry, a method that produces materials in a continuous stream and is highly reproducible and readily scaled. Additionally, each structural change significantly altered the melt and cure properties for each APO variant, which is advantageous for SLS manufacturing.

Molecular properties of polymeric materials for space applications

This cooperative agreement was intended to investigate the effects of a space environment on the properties of polymeric materials. In addition, efforts have been made to understand and investigate environment simulation techniques and test methodology. The results identified the changes in the properties of six aerospace structural adhesives, three neat high polymers, and two fiber-reinforced polymers, as caused by exposure to four simulated space environmental conditions. Significant property changes occurred for several of the systems as a result of one or more of the exposures. A summary of the research follows a list of related publications and presentations.

Stable powders made from photosensitive polycrystalline complexes of heterocyclic monomers and their polymers

The present invention relates to a low electronic conductivity polymer composition having well dispersed metal granules, a stable powder made from photosensitive polycrystalline complexes of pyrrole, or its substituted derivatives and silver cations for making the polymer composition, and methods of forming the stable powder and polymer composition, respectively. A polycrystalline complex of silver and a monomer, such as pyrrole, its substituted derivatives or combinations thereof, is precipitated in the form of a stable photosensitive powder upon addition of the monomer to a solvent solution, such as toluene containing an electron acceptor. The photosensitive powder can be stored in the dark until needed. The powder may be dissolved in a solvent, cast onto a substrate and photopolymerized.

Method of Cross-Linking Aerogels Using a One-Pot Reaction Scheme

A document discusses a new, simplified method for cross-linking silica and other oxide aerogels, with a polymeric material to increase strength of such materials without adversely affecting porosity or low density. This innovation introduces the polymer precursor into the sol before gelation either as an agent, which co-reacts with the oxide gel, or as soluble polymer precursors, which do not interact with the oxide gel in any way. Subsequent exposure to heat, light, catalyst or other method of promoting polymerization causes cross-linking without any additional infiltration steps.

High Energy, Low Temperature Gelled Bi-propellant Formulation Preparation Method

A method for preparing a gelled liquid propane (GLP) composition comprises the introduction of liquid propane into an evacuated mixing vessel containing a gellant and mixing the liquid propane with the gellant. A bi-propellant system comprising GLP is particularly well-suited for outer planet missions greater than 3 AU from the sun and also functions in earth and near earth environments. Additives such as powders of boron, carbon, lithium, and/or aluminum can be added improve performance or enhance hypergolicity. The gelling agent can be silicon dioxide, clay, carbon, or organic or inorganic polymers. The bi-propellant system may be, but need not be, hypergolic.

Reducing warpage in a hybrid large-scale additive manufacturing and compression molding process

In recent years, a hybrid manufacturing process, developed by combining extrusion-based large-scale additive manufacturing (AM) and compression molding (CM) techniques, has shown promising outcomes for producing structurally functional parts. The process can be used with both short fiber-reinforced composites and neat polymers and hence, even multi-material parts can be manufactured easily. This process offers the advantages of structural enhancement by having a desired fiber orientation using a large-scale AM process, as well as rapid manufacturing capability using a CM process. In the large-scale AM process, the alignment of fibers in the deposition direction enables significant improvement in the mechanical properties of the manufactured parts. However, the anisotropy resulting from the directional arrangement of fibers also introduces challenges related to warpage in the produced parts. This study aims to identify the causes of warpage and propose strategies to mitigate it. The research involves the use of preforms manufactured through the large-scale AM, which are then combined with the neat resin for CM manufacturing. A finite element-based numerical simulation model is developed, employing a sequentially coupled thermomechanical approach. Through a parametric study using the simulation models, optimization of printing direction and preform geometry is performed to minimize warpage. This contributes to the advancement and wider adoption of AM/CM hybrid manufacturing to produce structurally functional parts.

Reversible Crosslinked Polymer Binder for Recyclable Lithium Sulfur Batteries with High Performance

Owing to the negative impact of the extensive utilization of batteries on the environment, sustainability of the cells needs to be included in the systemic research of batteries. In this work, a dissolvable ionic crosslinked polymer (DICP) is exploited as a binder for lithium–sulfur batteries by crosslinking the polyacrylic acid and polyethyleneimine through carboxy-amino ionic interaction. This interaction is pH-controlled, and therefore, the crosslinked binder network can be readily dissociated under basic conditions, providing a facile strategy enabling valuable components recycled through a convenient washing method. The sulfur cathode prepared using the recycled carbon–sulfur composite can deliver comparable capacity as that of fresh electrode. In addition, evidence from cell performance and characterizations, such as in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ UV–visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculation, confirms that DICP is a more effective binder than its commercial counterpart on suppressing polysulfide dissolution in the electrolyte. Exploiting reversible crosslinked polymer binder for recyclable Li–S batteries with ameliorated electrochemical performance, this study illuminates sustainable development for large-scale energy storage systems.

Nanoscale Miscibility in In Situ Polymerized Hybrid Electrolytes Speeds Up Ion Dynamics and Enables Stable Cycling of Li Metal Batteries

While the potential use of copolymerized electrolytes in Li metal batteries is subject to intense investigation, the fundamental understanding of the nanoscale domain formation and its effect on Li + transport is still lacking. In this study, we investigated the correlation between the Li + transport mechanism and the miscibility of monomers in polymer blend electrolytes derived from the in situ copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and vinylene carbonate (VC) in the presence of polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether (PEGDME) plasticizer and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt. The addition of a polar short chain plasticizer reduced the dynamic and structural heterogeneities of the electrolyte. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements and coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to investigate the nanoscale structure of the electrolytes. The distribution of relaxation times corresponding to the three distinct diffusion mechanisms of the free and interfacial Li + ions at the copolymer/plasticizer and electrolyte/SEI boundaries was analyzed in a broad temperature range to elucidate the Li + transport mechanism. Furthermore, the chemical composition of the SEI and the contribution of a ceramic lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (LLZO, Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 ) phase on the interfacial resistance, salt degradation, and SEI stability were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth profile analysis and electrochemical testing.

Cell wall biology of the moss Physcomitrium patens

Abstract The moss Physcomitrium (previously Physcomitrella) patens is a non-vascular plant belonging to the bryophytes that has been used as a model species to study the evolution of plant cell wall structure and biosynthesis. Here, we present an updated review of the cell wall biology of P. patens. Immunocytochemical and structural studies have shown that the cell walls of P. patens mainly contain cellulose, hemicelluloses (xyloglucan, xylan, glucomannan, and arabinoglucan), pectin, and glycoproteins, and their abundance varies among different cell types and at different plant developmental stages. Genetic and biochemical analyses have revealed that a number of genes involved in cell wall biosynthesis are functionally conserved between P. patens and vascular plants, indicating that the common ancestor of mosses and vascular plants had already acquired most of the biosynthetic machinery to make various cell wall polymers. Although P. patens does not synthesize lignin, homologs of the phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway genes exist in P. patens and they play an essential role in the production of caffeate derivatives for cuticle formation. Further genetic and biochemical dissection of cell wall biosynthetic genes in P. patens promises to provide additional insights into the evolutionary history of plant cell wall structure and biosynthesis.

Laser Sintering of Thermoset Polyimide Composites

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is an additive manufacturing technique that builds 3D models layer by layer using a laser to selectively melt cross sections in powdered polymeric materials, following sequential slices of the CAD model. SLS generally uses thermoplastic polymeric powders, such as polyamides (i.e. Nylon), and the resultant 3D objects are often weaker in their strength compared to traditionally processed materials, due to the lack of polymer inter-chain connection in the z-direction. Our previous effort showed the challenges of printing a melt-processable RTM370 imide resin powder terminated with reactive 4-phenylethynylphthalic anhydride by LS, due to its inherently low viscosity of these oligomers. This paper presented the first successful 3D printing of high temperature carbon fiber filled thermoset polyimide composites, followed by post cure cycles to promote additional crosslinking for achieving higher temperature (Tg = 370 °C) capability. The processes to build tensile specimens and a component by LS, and the characterization of RTM370 imide resin by DSC and rheology as well as evaluation of the LS printed polyimide composite specimens by SEM and mechanical tests will be discussed.

Bio‐Based Piezo‐ and Thermoresistive Photocurable Sensing Materials from Acrylated Epoxidized Soybean Oil

Abstract Bio‐based photocurable polymers are increasingly in demand as environmentally friendly materials for advanced applications. Together with functional fillers, these represent a next step for the generation of functional and active smart materials, compatible with additive manufacturing technologies. Herein, acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) mixed with different amounts of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) up to 6 wt% in order to obtain UV‐curable piezoresistive and thermoresistive materials, is reported. It is shown that the addition of rGO to AESO hinders the curing process, but always maintains double bond conversions higher than 50%. Composites are characterized by a good dispersion of micrometric filler clusters. Further, the thermal stabilities are close to 300 °C and crosslinking degrees are above 1.75 mmol cm –3 . The Young modulus of the composites decreases with the addition of the rGO fillers, in particular for the higher filler contents, and electrical conductivities up to 0.13 S m –1 are obtained for the composites with the highest rGO content. UV‐curable composites with piezoresistive and thermoresistive responses suitable for applications are thus obtained, characterized by gauge factors around 26 for deformations up to 2% and maximum thermoresistive sensitivity of S = 0.43, values similar to the values obtained for petroleum‐based materials.

Colloidal Semiconductor Nanocrystal Lasers and Laser Diodes

Lasers and optical amplifiers based on solution-processable materials have been long-desired devices for their compatibility with virtually any substrate, scalability, and ease of integration with on-chip photonics and electronics. These devices have been pursued across a wide range of materials including polymers, small molecules, perovskites, and chemically prepared colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, also commonly referred to as colloidal quantum dots. The latter materials are especially attractive for implementing optical-gain media as in addition to being compatible with inexpensive and easily scalable chemical techniques, they offer multiple advantages derived from a zero-dimensional character of their electronic states. These include a size-tunable emission wavelength, low optical gain thresholds, and weak sensitivity of lasing characteristics to variations in temperature. Here we review the status of colloidal nanocrystal lasing devices, most recent advances in this field, outstanding challenges, and the ongoing progress toward technological viable devices including colloidal quantum dot laser diodes.

Relaxation Dynamics and Ion Conduction of Poly(Ethylene Carbonate/Ethylene Oxide) Copolymer-Based Electrolytes

Poly(ethylene carbonate/ethylene oxide) P(EC/EO) copolymer was synthesized from EC monomer as a new matrix component of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs), and the correlation between polymer dynamics and ionic conductivity in the P(EC/EO)-based SPEs at various lithium salt weight fractions (w Li ) was investigated by dielectric spectroscopy, rheology, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. With the addition of lithium salt, the molecular motions at various scales (i.e., from local to segmental and global motion scales) were found to change as follows: (i) the local motion of P(EC/EO) was slightly accelerated, and at w Li ≥ 0.22, it was separated into two relaxation modes, one faster and the other slower than that of P(EC/EO), (ii) the segmental motion of P(EC/EO) became significantly slower with the addition of lithium salt, and (iii) the global terminal relaxation became slightly slower with the increase of w Li . Thus, the motion of P(EC/EO) at various scales in SPEs changed with different trends with increasing lithium salt. It was also found that the temperature dependence of the ionic conductivity was described by a Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann-type function, which was correlated with the segmental motion, as is known in other SPE systems. Furthermore, from MD simulations, lithium ions are coordinated with the EC units more likely and with a closer distance than EO units in P(EC/EO), and the coordination number of oxygens around one lithium ion was estimated as 6–7 at the distance of 0.30 nm. Here, these results suggest that the coordination structure of the oxygens around the lithium ion is slightly disrupted due to the presence of EC units compared to the chelating structure of pure PEO electrolytes.

Simultaneous removal of C 2 H 2 and C 2 H 6 for C 2 H 4 purification by robust MOFs featuring a high density of heteroatoms

Simultaneous removal of C 2 H 6 and C 2 H 2 from C 2 H 4 streams is of great importance in the petrochemical industry but remains a challenging task. To address this challenge, we have selected three isoreticular MOFs with high stability, low cost, and desirable scale-up ability, namely, MOF-303, MIL-160, and CAU-23 and assessed their potential in simultaneous removal of acetylene and ethane for ethylene purification. Each MOF exhibits desirable C 2 H 2 and C 2 H 6 uptake capacity (>5.5 mmol g –1 and >4 mmol g –1 , respectively), as well as good C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 selectivity (>2) and C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity (>1.5). Notably, MOF-303 takes up 4.96 mmol g –1 C 2 H 6 at 298 K and 1 bar, the highest value among the three MOFs, with C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity in the range of 1.55–2.47. MIL-160 possesses a very high C 2 H 2 uptake (9.1 mmol g –1 ) and C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 selectivity, 10.6 (1 : 1, v/v), at 298 K, much higher than those of all other MOFs tested to date for simultaneous removal of C 2 H 6 and C 2 H 2 from C 2 H 4 . The results from breakthrough experiments confirm that all three MOFs demonstrate excellent performance for C 2 H 4 purification in a ternary mixture of C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 2 (1 : 1 : 1, v/v/v). Here, for MOF-303, MIL-160, and CAU-23, polymer-grade C 2 H 4 up to 0.164, 0.21, and 0.181 mmol g –1 can be obtained from the equimolar ternary mixture in a single separation step from the breakthrough experiment. Additionally, DFT calculations have been performed to further investigate the mechanism of adsorption/separation for C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 2 .
