Recovery, Restoration and Archiving of Previously Lost Data and Metadata from the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP)

The Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) is the name used to collectively represent the geophysical instruments deployed on the lunar surface by the astronauts on Apollo 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17. These instruments were active from the times of their deployment (November 1969 – December 1972) to September 1977. During that time, fourteen types of experiments were conducted, and their data were transmitted to Earth. The experiment PIs processed them. At the conclusion of the experiments, some of these data were submitted to the NASA Space Science Data Coordinated Archive (NSSDCA) for archiving, while others were not. The raw instrument data received from the Moon prior to March 1976 were not archived, either. The unarchived data, resided on open-reel magnetic tapes, became lost in the decades since, along with much of the metadata (the information necessary/useful in properly processing/analyzing the data). This article retraces the history of the ALSEP data archiving efforts in the 1970s, the subsequent loss of the data tapes, and the search, recovery, and restoration of the lost data by contemporary researchers in the 21st century. In 2006, NSSDCA began reformatting some of the ALSEP data archived in the 1970s to conform with the current Planetary Data System (PDS). In 2010, 440 of the previously lost magnetic tapes containing the raw ALSEP data were recovered. From these tapes, the data were extracted, re-packaged for individual experiments, and, for those with sufficient metadata, processed into higher order data readily usable by researchers. All of these data products have been recently archived with either PDS or NSSDCA. These newly restored data fill a number of gaps in the previously existing archive of the ALSEP data. In addition, tens of thousands of pages of Apollo era documents have been optically scanned and compiled into an online searchable catalog. This article also describes the content, organization, and usage of the restored raw ALSEP data and metadata.

A re-evaluation of the Haser model scale lengths for comets

The scale lengths are examined for the Haser (1957) model using new, photoelectric, high signal-to-noise ratio data on a variety of comets. The comets have helicocentric distances from 0.75 to 1.81 AU. It is shown that the scale lengths for C2 and C3 compiled by A'Hearn and Newburn and Spinrad (1984) do not adequately represent the data for most of the comets considered. New scale lengths are derived for these two molecules. CN scale lengths are discussed. It is shown that an R-sub-h squared variation for the scale lengths works for most molecules but that the C2 parent scale length must vary by R-sub-h to the 2.5 power.

International Interlaboratory Compilation of Trace Element Concentrations in the CUP-2 Uranium Ore Concentrate Standard

The accurate and precise analysis of impurities in uranium ore concentrates is an important aspect of nuclear forensics. Defensibility of analytical data requires the use of analytical reference materials as part of quality control. This report presents a compilation of the results of trace element concentration measurements of the CUP-2 Uranium Ore Concentration Standard from 11 different laboratories. Various dissolution methods, instrumental platforms, and analytical methods were employed. The resulting data set contains concentration of 66 impurities with up to 139 individual data points for each impurity. Consensus values have been assigned to each impurity following a statistical analysis of the data set.

Efficient Type Representation in TAL

Certifying compilers generate proofs for low-level code that guarantee safety properties of the code. Type information is an essential part of safety proofs. But the size of type information remains a concern for certifying compilers in practice. This paper demonstrates type representation techniques in a large-scale compiler that achieves both concise type information and efficient type checking. In our 200,000-line certifying compiler, the size of type information is about 36% of the size of pure code and data for our benchmarks, the best result to the best of our knowledge. The type checking time is about 2% of the compilation time.

Solar Coronal Structure Study

The subject of this investigation is the study the physics of the solar corona through the analysis of the EUV and UV data produced by two flights (12 May 1992 and 25 April 1994) of the Lockheed Solar Plasma Diagnostics Experiment (SPDE) sounding rocket payload, in combination with Yohkoh and groundbased data. These joint datasets are useful for understanding the physical state of the solar atmosphere from the photosphere to the corona at the time of the rocket flights. Each rocket flight produced both spectral and imaging data. Highlights of this initial year of the contract included compilation, scaling and co-alignment of image sets, substantial progress on the Bright Point study, initial work on the Active Region and Large Scale Structure studies, DRSC slit-aspect determination work and calibration activities. One paper was presented at the 1997 Annual Meeting of the AAS/SPD in Bozeman, Montana. An initial set of calibrated spectra were placed into the public domain via the World Wide Web. Three Quarterly Progress Reports have been submitted; progress for the fourth quarter of the contract is summarized in this Final Contract Report. The intent of the investigation is to compare the physics of small- and medium-scale structure with that of large-scale structures with weak fields. A study has been identified in each size domain. The calibration of the rocket data forms an important element of the work. Of equal importance is the slit-aspect solution, which determines the correspondence between locations along the spectrograph slit and points on the solar disk.

Electron-nitrogen molecular collisions in high-temperature nonequilibrium air

Ab initio calculation of vibrational excitation and deexcitation cross sections of N2 by low energy resonant electron impact have been carried out. The calculation includes initial target state in v = 0-12 and final target state in v = 0-17. The calculated cross sections are found to agree with available experimental data to within reported experimental error. Effect of target rotation has been investigated. Comparison of vibrational excitation cross sections at J = 0, 50, and 150 shows that the major effect of target rotation is to lower the resonance energy. Vibrational excitation and deexcitation rate coefficients are tabulated for electron temperatures of 1100-55,000 K. The present tabulation supercedes an earlier compilation by the Naval Research Laboratory that was derived from experimental data with a factor-of-two error. The tabulated rate coefficients are suited for flowfield modeling of aeroassisted orbital transfer vehicles.

Adaptation of a Control Center Development Environment for Industrial Process Control

In the control center, raw telemetry data is received for storage, display, and analysis. This raw data must be combined and manipulated in various ways by mathematical computations to facilitate analysis, provide diversified fault detection mechanisms, and enhance display readability. A development tool called the Graphical Computation Builder (GCB) has been implemented which provides flight controllers with the capability to implement computations for use in the control center. The GCB provides a language that contains both general programming constructs and language elements specifically tailored for the control center environment. The GCB concept allows staff who are not skilled in computer programming to author and maintain computer programs. The GCB user is isolated from the details of external subsystem interfaces and has access to high-level functions such as matrix operators, trigonometric functions, and unit conversion macros. The GCB provides a high level of feedback during computation development that improves upon the often cryptic errors produced by computer language compilers. An equivalent need can be identified in the industrial data acquisition and process control domain: that of an integrated graphical development tool tailored to the application to hide the operating system, computer language, and data acquisition interface details. The GCB features a modular design which makes it suitable for technology transfer without significant rework. Control center-specific language elements can be replaced by elements specific to industrial process control.
