Understanding the Structure and Dynamics of Conjugated Polymers by Advancing Deuteration Chemistry and Neutron Scattering (Final Report)

The overarching goal of the proposed work was to set up a partnership between the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to develop novel approaches to measure the backbone rigidity of conjugated polymers (CPs) and understand the critical role of sidechains on the backbone conformation and the materials macroscopic property. The backbone rigidity greatly influences the electronic properties of CPs, which ultimately determines the functionality and performance of these materials. Improvements in the electronic properties of CPs would allow for enhanced charge transport in semiconductor devices, improved photovoltaic performance, recycling of waste heat in thermoelectrics, and discovery of new phenomena that will enable the next generation of energy technologies. Although significant progress has been made to optimize the optical and electronic properties of CPs, largely through Edisonian methodologies, it remains a challenge to experimentally characterize conjugated backbone conformation (chain rigidity, torsion, planarity, and short-range order) and relate these to the fundamental optical and electronic properties (electronic coupling, charge transport, etc.). This has left fundamental gaps in our knowledge of the most basic structure/property relationships within these systems, precluded the study of fundamental physical phenomena, and constrained the design and realization of new electronic and device functionalities. Thus, the major goal of this work is to use novel deuteration methodologies via systematic synthetic approaches, and neutron scattering techniques to comprehensively characterize the structural and dynamic properties of CPs in contrast-matching solvents. Our work would, for the first time, elucidate the relationship between backbone rigidity and macroscopic properties. They will also allow a rational formulation of design principles for next-generation CPs that are resilient to disorder through precise control of the delocalized electrons along the polymer backbone. Overall, this project will advance our understanding of the structure, dynamics, and fundamental physics of these materials, which is crucial for enabling the prediction, design, control, and manipulation of current and emerging material electronic properties.

Digital Twin User Guide for Chelan County Public Utility District

This user manual offers a comprehensive guide for developing a Digital twin (DT) of a Kaplan turbine at Chelan County Public Utility District (Chelan PUD) using neural networks. As variable renewable generation expands, hydropower units must operate with optimal efficiency and stability. For Kaplan machines, this flexibility is achieved through coordinated control of guide vane (wicket gates) opening and runner blade pitch, which amplifies the plant’s inherent nonlinear behavior and challenges traditional physics-only modeling. The efficiency of the Kaplan turbine varies with different combinations of the guide vans (wicket gate) opening and the blade angle. Each guide van opening and blade angle has a corresponding highest efficiency point, forming a cam relationship that represents the optimal combination. The discharge of a hydraulic turbine is controlled by the opening angle of the guide vans. Therefore, for each value of head, there is a certain guide van opening and blade angle that corresponds to the highest efficiency. For a given head, different combinations of the guide van opening and blade angle have different efficiencies. Therefore, coordinate cam curves are used to describe the relationship between the wicket gate opening and blade angle with different water head. To address these challenges, the manual details a data-driven modeling and learning workflow centered on structured neural networks. The approach is designed to forecast critical operational variables—discharge flow, net head, penstock (or scroll-case) pressure, and generator electrical outputs—by leveraging real-time inputs such as the generator power control setpoint, exciter field current and field voltage, together with hydromechanical commands (e.g., gate position and, when available, runner blade-pitch angle). The neural models are trained and validated on operational data from a Kaplan unit operated by Chelan PUD, demonstrating that the structured NN architecture can learn the coupled gate–blade–electrical dynamics. The result is a robust DT that improves situational awareness and supports data-informed decision-making for Chelan PUD’s Kaplan turbine operations.

In-Plane Liftout and Push-to-Pull for In Situ Mechanical Testing of Irradiated Inconel X-750

A streamlined sample preparation method for nanomechanical testing is needed to improve the quality of specimens, reduce the cost, and increase the versatility of specimen fabrication. This work outlines an in-plane liftout focused ion beam (FIB) fabrication procedure to prepare electron-transparent specimens for in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) nanomechanical testing. Ion etching and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques were used to lift out a [110] oriented grain from a neutron-irradiated bulk X-750 alloy. Careful control of voltages and currents ensured precision. Top surface thinning sweeps prevented resurfacing and redeposition while dog-bone geometries were shaped with a 1:4 gauge width-to-milling pattern diameter ratio. Nanotensile testing in the TEM with a picoindenter allowed for the estimation of an ultimate tensile strength of 2.41 GPa, and inspection revealed a high density of bubbles in the X-750 matrix. The proposed fabrication procedure is significant for preparing samples from radioactive materials, studying complex structures that are orientation-dependent, and analyzing desired planar areas.

Circuit prevents overcharging of secondary cell batteries

Circuit prevents battery cell overcharging by detecting and reducing the charging voltage to the open-circuit voltage of the battery when this current falls to a predetermined value. The voltage control depends on the fact that the charging current falls significantly when the battery nears its fully charged state.

The application of standardized control and interface circuits to three dc to dc power converters.

Standardized control and interface circuits were applied to the three most commonly used dc to dc converters: the buck-boost converter, the series-switching buck regulator, and the pulse-modulated parallel inverter. The two-loop ASDTIC regulation control concept was implemented by using a common analog control signal processor and a novel digital control signal processor. This resulted in control circuit standardization and superior static and dynamic performance of the three dc-to-dc converters. Power components stress control, through active peak current limiting and recovery of switching losses, was applied to enhance reliability and converter efficiency.

A self-reorganizing digital flight control system for aircraft

This paper presents a design method for digital self-reorganizing control systems which is optimally tolerant of failures in aircraft sensors. The functions of this system are accomplished with software instead of the popular and costly technique of hardware duplication. The theoretical development, based on M-ary hypothesis testing, results in a bank of M Kalman filters operating in parallel in the failure detection logic. A moving window of the innovations of each Kalman filter drives the detection logic to decide the failure state of the system. The detection logic also selects the optimal state estimate (for control logic) from the bank of Kalman filters. The design process is applied to the design of a self-reorganizing control system for a current configuration of the space shuttle orbiter at Mach 5 and 120,000 feet. The failure detection capabilities of the system are demonstrated using a real-time simulation of the system with noisy sensors.

Metabolic rate control during extravehicular activity simulations and measurement techniques during actual EVAS

A description of the methods used to control and measure metabolic rate during ground simulations is given. Work levels attained at the Space Environment Simulation Laboratory are presented. The techniques and data acquired during ground simulations are described and compared with inflight procedures. Data from both the Skylab and Apollo Program were utilized and emphasis is given to the methodology, both in simulation and during flight. The basic techniques of work rate assessment are described. They include oxygen consumption, which was useful for averages over long time periods, heart rate correlations based on laboratory calibrations, and liquid cooling garment temperature changes. The relative accuracy of these methods as well as the methods of real-time monitoring at the Mission Control Center are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of each of the metabolic measurement techniques are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the problem of utilizing oxygen decrement for short time periods and heart rate at low work levels. A summary is given of the effectiveness of work rate control and measurements; and current plans for future EVA monitoring are discussed.

Arc termination cracks in Inconel 718 and Incoloy 903

The welding of the nickel base, heat resistant alloys that are used extensively for welded Shuttle engine components revealed solidification cracking characteristics at weld termination points. If not detected and removed, these crater cracks may cause costly component failure. To better understand this characteristic, welding termination techniques were studied and methods developed to eliminate crater cracks. It was determined that weld termination solidification cracking can be eliminated by controlled decrease of welding current, welding voltage, wire feed, and travel speed.

Results of the second flight test of the Loran-C receiver/data collection system

The components of the Loran-C navigation system which were developed thus far are a phase-locked-loop receiver and a microcomputer development system. The microcomputer is being used as a means of testing and implementing software to handle sensor control and navigation calculations. Currently, the microcomputer is being used to collect and record data from the receiver in addition to development work. With these components, it was possible to record receiver data over a period of time and then reduce this data to obtain statistical information. It was particularly interesting to load the equipment developed in the laboratory into an aircraft and collect data while in flight. For initial flight tests, some important considerations were how well the entire system will perform in the field, signal strength levels while on the ground and in the air, the amount of noise present, changing of signal-to-noise ratio for various aircraft configurations and maneuvers, receiver overloading due to other equipment and antennas, and the overall usefulness of Loran-C as a navigation aid.

Radiation damage in high voltage silicon solar cells

High open circuit voltage cell designs based on 0.1 Ohm cm p-type silicon were irradiated with 1 MeV electrons and their performance determined to fluences as high as 10 to the 15th power per sq cm. Of the three cell designs, radiation induced degradation was greatest in the high low emitter (HLE) cell. The diffused and ion implanted cells degraded approximately equally but less than the HLE cell. Degradation was greatest in an HLE cell exposed to X-rays before electron irradiation. The cell regions controlling both short circuit current and open circuit voltage degradation were defined in all three cell types. An increase in front surface recombination velocity accompanied time dependent degradation of an HLE cell after X-irradiation. It was speculated that this was indirectly due to a decrease in positive charge at the silicon oxide interface. Modifications aimed at reducing radiation induced degradation are proposed for all three cell types.

Production readiness verification testing

A Production Readiness Verification Testing (PRVT) program has been established to determine if structures fabricated from advanced composites can be committed on a production basis to commercial airline service. The program utilizes subcomponents which reflect the variabilities in structure that can realistically be expected from current production and quality control technology to estimate the production qualities, variation in static strength, and durability of advanced composite structures. The results of the static tests and a durability assessment after one year of continuous load/environment testing of twenty two duplicates of each of two structural components (a segment of the front spar and cover of a vertical stabilizer box structure) are discussed.
