ELF propagation in the plasmasphere based on satellite observations of discrete and continuous forms

The propagation of electromagnetic waves in a nonhomogeneous anisotropic medium is examined from the point of view of geometrical optics. In particular, the propagation of ELF waves in the magnetosphere is described in terms of the electron and ion densities and the intensity and inclination of the earth's magnetic field. The analysis of the variations of wave normal angle along the ray path is extended to include the effects of ions. A comparison of the relative importance of each of the above parameters in controlling the orientation of the wave normals is made in the region of the magnetosphere where most of the ion whistlers have been detected.

Continued development of the Combined Pulsed Neutron Experiment (CPNE) for lunar and planetary surfaces

Current progress is reported on the inelastic scattering, capture, and activation gamma ray portions of the Combined Pulsed Neutron Experiment (CPNE). Experiments are described which have enabled a reduction in weight of the experimental probe to 7.3 kg. Parametric studies are described which enabled the optimization of experimental parameters (e.g., gate time settings, neutron pulse rate, etc.). Estimated detection sensitivities using this light weight probe and the optimized experimental parameters are discussed.

Continued investigation of solid propulsion economics. Task 1B: Large solid rocket motor case fabrication methods - Supplement process complexity factor cost technique

This supplement to Task lB-Large Solid Rocket Motor Case Fabrication Methods supplies additional supporting cost data and discusses in detail the methodology that was applied to the task. For the case elements studied, the cost was found to be directly proportional to the Process Complexity Factor (PCF). The PCF was obtained for each element by identifying unit processes that are common to the elements and their alternative manufacturing routes, by assigning a weight to each unit process, and by summing the weighted counts. In three instances of actual manufacture, the actual cost per pound equaled the cost estimate based on PCF per pound, but this supplement, recognizes that the methodology is of limited, rather than general, application.

Continuous magnetic flux pump

A method and means for altering the intensity of a magnetic field by transposing flux from one location to the location desired fro the magnetic field are examined. The device described includes a pair of communicating cavities formed in a block of superconducting material, is dimensioned to be insertable into one of the cavities and to substantially fill the cavity. Magnetic flux is first trapped in the cavities by establishing a magnetic field while the superconducting material is above the critical temperature at which it goes superconducting. Thereafter, the temperature of the material is reduced below the critical value, and then the exciting magnetic field may be removed. By varying the ratios of the areas of the two cavities, it is possible to produce a field having much greater flux density in the second, smaller cavity, into which the flux transposed.

Does a continuous solid nucleus exist in comets.

The implication of actual cometary observations for the physical nature of comets is briefly reviewed, bringing out the complete conflict with observation of the ice-dust solid nucleus model put forward in recent years as representing the fundamental structure of comets. That under increasing solar heat the nucleus develops an expanding atmosphere is inconsistent with the well-established phenomenon that the coma contracts with decreasing distance from the sun. Several comets remaining always beyond Mars have nevertheless been strongly active and produced fine tails. That some comets show at times a star-like point of light is readily explicable on the dust-cloud structure and by no means establishes that a solid nucleus exists. With the nucleus-area corresponding not to a small solid mass but to an optical phenomenon, there would be no reason to expect that it would describe a precise dynamical orbit. On the hypothesis of a nucleus, it is necessary to postulate further some internal jet-propulsion mechanism to account for the orbital deviations.
