Controlled Speed Accessory Drive demonstration program

A Controlled Speed Accessory Drive System was examined in an effort to improve the fuel economy of passenger cars. Concept feasibility and the performance of a typical system during actual road driving conditions were demonstrated. The CSAD system is described as a mechanical device which limits engine accessory speeds, thereby reducing parasitic horsepower losses and improving overall vehicle fuel economy. Fuel consumption data were compiled for fleets of GSA vehicles. Various motor pool locations were selected, each representing different climatic conditions. On the basis of a total accumulated fleet usage of nearly three million miles, an overall fuel economy improvement of 6 percent to 7 percent was demonstrated. Coincident chassis dynamometer tests were accomplished on selected vehicles to establish the effect of different accessory drive systems on exhaust emissions, and to evaluate the magnitude of the mileage benefits which could be derived.

The International Halley Watch: A program of coordination, cooperation and advocacy

To prevent a repetition of the lack of reporting and dissemination of the data obtained during the 1910 observations of Comet Halley, a mechanism is proposed for coordinating the work of scientists and amateurs, including government, industrials, and academic personnel during the 1985-86 apparition of Comet Halley. Specialists from each discipline, in consultation with other experts in the field, would recommend specific objectives, standards, data format, and priorities for observations in that discipline. Following time for individual publication, scientists would be invited to contribute results to a multivolume compilation containing as complete as possible a record of the apparition. It is suggested that the discipline specialists be selected jointly by the IHW leader an by an international steering group with members from COSPAR, the IAU, etc., perhaps in response to some form of international announcement of opportunity.

The mineralogy of global magnetic anomalies

Progress is reported in developing predictive abilities to evaluate the potential stabilities of magnetic minerals in the Earth crust and mantle by: (1) computing oxidation state profiling as a function of temperature and pressure; (2) compiling data on basalts to establish validity of the oxidation state profiles; (3) determining Fe-Ni alloys in association with magnetitie as a function of temperature and oxidation state; and (4) acquiring large chemical data banks on the mineral ilmenite which decomposes to mineral spinel in the presence of high sulfur or carbonate environments in the lower crust upper mantle. In addition to acquiring these data which are related to constraining Curie isotherm depths, an excellent correlation was found between MAGSAT anomaly data and the geology of West Africa.

Environmental exposure effects on composite materials for commercial aircraft

The effects of environmental exposure on composite materials are studied. The environments considered are representative of those experienced by commercial jet aircraft. Initial results have been compiled for the following material systems: T300/5208, T300/5209 and T300/934. Specimens were exposed on the exterior and interior of Boeing 737 airplanes of three airlines, and to continuous ground level exposure at four locations. In addition specimens were exposed in the laboratory to conditions such as: simulated ground-air-ground, weatherometer, and moisture. Residual strength results are presented for specimens exposed for up to two years at three ground level exposure locations and on airplanes from two airlines. Test results are also given for specimens exposed to the laboratory simulated environments. Test results indicate that short beam shear strength is sensitive to environmental exposure and dependent on the level of absorbed moisture.

The horizontal and vertical semi-diameters of the Sun observed at the Cape of Good Hope (1834 - 1887) and Paris (1837 - 1906): A report on work in progress

Cape and Paris meridian observations of the solar limbs which permit an estimate to be made of the solar semi-diameter were surveyed, sampled, and compared with Greenwich and U.S. Naval Observatory observations. Significant systematic errors were found in the Paris work and have been correlated with changes of instruments and observers. Results from the Cape series indicate that work should continue on the compilation of data from Cape observations of the Sun.

Characterizing user requirements for future land observing satellites

The objective procedure was developed for identifying probable sensor and mission characteristics for an operational satellite land observing system. Requirements were systematically compiled, quantified and scored by type of use, from surveys of federal, state, local and private communities. Incremental percent increases in expected value of data were estimated for critical system improvements. Comparisons with costs permitted selection of a probable sensor system, from a set of 11 options, with the following characteristics: 30 meter spatial resolution in 5 bands and 15 meters in 1 band, spectral bands nominally at Thematic Mapper (TM) bands 1 through 6 positions, and 2 day data turn around for receipt of imagery. Improvements are suggested for both the form of questions and the procedures for analysis of future surveys in order to provide a more quantitatively precise definition of sensor and mission requirements.

Physiological responses to prolonged bed rest and fluid immersion in man: A compendium of research (1974 - 1980)

Water immersion and prolonged bed rest reproduce nearly all the physiological responses observed in astronauts in the weightless state. Related to actual weightlessness, given responses tend to occur sooner in immersion and later in bed rest. Much research was conducted on humans using these two techniques, especially by Russian scientists. Abstracts and annotations of reports that appeared in the literature from January 1974 through December 1980 are compiled and discussed.

Inferences about the solar wind dynamics from observed distributions of electrons and ions

Recent measurements, mostly from Helios and Voyager, were reviewed. The observational material was compiled into a series of radial profiles for various macroscopic plasma parameters. Several examples for experimentally determined three-dimensional distribution functions of protons are shown. The physical properties of the solar wind electrons were surveyed. The still unresolved question of the driving mechanism of the solar wind is considered. The problem of the energy balance in pure, high velocity streams emanating from solar coronal holes was outlined. It is suggested that the suprathermal electrons may play an important role in driving the wind. Numerical estimates, referring to the lower corona, are offered in support of this hypothesis.

Precise time and time interval users, requirements and specifications

The functional areas of application of Precise Time and Time Interval (PTTI) were considered and expanded. A comprehensive overview of the PTTI requirements and applications would provide an opportunity for individuals working in a specific functional area. Mutual problems, requirements, applications or successes shared by those in other functional areas were studied. Based upon the results of a two year study a compendium of PTTI requirements, applications and the means of meeting the requirements among Department of Defense components, other government agencies and major commercial users was compiled and is presented. It was found that the planning process for PTTI support for new acquisitions or new programs was less than a well defined, coordinated process. The processes are described in general terms and a generic model for requirements determination and subsequent coordination which may enhance the planning process and introduce cost benefits to the program is also presented.

A history and analysis of hydrogen maser reliability

Hydrogen masers an integral part of the Deep Space Network, provide extremely accurate navigation about the outer planets, as well as precise location of tracking stations. Reliability of equipment over extended periods of time was considered. The Deep Space Network has a number of hydrogen masers deployed and in the test cycle, which enabled an analysis of reliability of several generations and breeds of construction. A history and analysis of hydrogen maser reliability over a three-year period was compiled several types of masers.

Experience with a vectorized general circulation weather model on Star-100

A version of an atmospheric general circulation model was vectorized to run on a CDC STAR 100. The numerical model was coded and run in two different vector languages, CDC and LRLTRAN. A factor of 10 speed improvement over an IBM 360/95 was realized. Efficient use of the STAR machine required some redesigning of algorithms and logic. This precludes the application of vectorizing compilers on the original scalar code to achieve the same results. Vector languages permit a more natural and efficient formulation for such numerical codes.
