Fabrication and Characterization of Single-Particle Compacts

The programmatic objective of the advanced low enriched uranium (aLEU) fuel Project within the Office of Nonproliferation Research and Development (NA-22) is to advance the development of nuclear reactor designs, fuel materials, and fabrication technologies capable of meeting a number of challenging customer requirements, including reactor stability, extended lifetime, and power density without refueling, while using only low-enriched uranium (i.e., less than 20% enrichment of 235 U). The tandem requirements of delivering sufficient power density and maintaining fuel performance over the course of a multidecade fuel lifetime tightly constrain the field of potential fuel options. Monolithic fuel forms (e.g., fuel pellets) provide maximized density of fissile material, but they may face challenges in maintaining their structure and performance over the long reactor lifetimes envisioned in this program. Dispersion fuel forms with an inert matrix provide enhanced long-term stability but sacrifice fissile material density, and they may not provide sufficient power density over the reactor lifetime with the limit of low enrichment.

CHEETAH: Compact High Efficiency Electrically Tunable Amplifier (Final Report)

The goal of this project was to develop a new type of optically triggered, high speed and high power switch for radiofrequency applications with potential to exceed current state-of-the-art power and bandwidth. This device operates under a new operation principle, where discrete packets of charge carriers are generated with defined size. These are then swept out of the device at high enough fields to prevent diffusion and expansion of these packets. Individual pulse widths are determined by the spatial extent of these packets and their drift velocity, which would enable control over both amplitude and frequency by control of the initial packet size, illumination intensity, and applied voltage. This effort demonstrated this new mode of operation, while uncovering a new regime of pulse compression using negative differential mobility (NDM) semiconductors such as GaAs, where the output electrical pulse is substantially shorter than the input optical pulse.

Compact Multicell SRF Crab Cavity for ILC

International Linear Collider (ILC), a proposed linear electron-positron collider, plans to utilize crab cavities to enhance its luminosity. By introducing a transverse kick to the beams, the crab cavities (CC) rotate the beam bunches, allowing for increased overlap at the interaction points. High intensity of the beam current and limited transverse space along the beam pipe near the interaction point resulted in choosing superconducting technology for the ILC/CC. We present a scalable design of a superconducting Quasi-waveguide Multicell Resonator (QMiR) seamlessly connected with a beam vacuum chamber. The cavity is completely open at both ends, which avoids complex HOM couplers, and thus simplifies the mechanical design of the cavity.

Compact scalable nanofiber mass production using electrospinning

A low power out put high voltage power supply unit for mass producing thicker nanofiber mat has been built in-house and earned a provisional patent last year. This nanofiber fabrication unit has unique features to produce stand alone thick ceramic nanofiber for specialized application such as isotop production and accelerator targets for high energy physics experiments. This is a versatile unit which can produce wide variety of polymer nanofibers on a semi industrial scale for application in air filtration, face mask, facial beauty pads, gas sensors and many more.
