Space Shuttle ice suppression system validation, volume 2

The influence of nozzle size is dramatically illustrated in lab runs. It appears that increasing the size of the nozzle provides better coverage of ogive and mid-region of the external tank. It is interesting to note, however, that for the bottom region of the external tank, coverage seems to decrease with nozzle size. This can be explained if both the assymmetry of the lower set of nozzles and the blockage provided by the Orbiter aft-support structure are taken into account.

Suppression of asymmetric acid efflux and gravitropism in maize roots treated with auxin transport inhibitors of sodium orthovanadate

In gravitropically stimulated roots of maize (Zea mays L., hybrid WF9 x 38MS), there is more acid efflux on the rapidly growing upper side than on the slowly growing lower side. In light of the Cholodny/Went hypothesis of gravitropism which states that gravitropic curvature results from lateral redistribution of auxin, the effects of auxin transport inhibitors on the development of acid efflux asymmetry and curvature in gravistimulated roots were examined. All the transport inhibitors tested prevented both gravitropism and the development of asymmetric acid efflux in gravistimulated roots. The results indicate that auxin redistribution may cause the asymmetry of acid efflux, a finding consistent with the Cholodny/Went hypothesis of gravitropism. As further evidence that auxin-induced acid efflux asymmetry may mediate gravitropic curvature, sodium orthovanadate, an inhibitor of auxin-induced H+ efflux was found to prevent both gravitropism and the development of asymmetric acid efflux in gravistimulated roots.

Testing of a stall flutter suppression system for helicopter rotors using individual-blade-control

The development and testing of a feedback system designed to alleviate rotor blade first torsion mode oscillations associated with stall flutter are described. The system employs blade-mounted sensors to detect torsional oscillations and provide feedback in order to increase the damping of the first torsional mode. A model of the blade and control system dynamics is developed and is used to give qualitative and quantitative guidance in the design process, as well as to aid in the analysis of experimental results. System performance in wind tunnel tests in forward flight is described, and experimental results show that the system can provide substantial additional damping to stall-induced oscillations.

Static-Suppressing Optical Paint

Electrically conductive flat black paint adheres well to magnesium, aluminum, fiberglass, and other materials. Paint absorbs stray light in optical instruments while preventing buildup of electrostatic fields and arcing. Paint consists of primer and topcoat, both containing electricallyconductive carbon-black powder. Primer two-part epoxy base, and topcoat polyurethane base.

Comparator With Noise Suppression

Comparator continuously and automatically adjusts noise immunity period. High-gain amplifier used in conjunction with multivibrator 4 to provide clear pulse to multivibrator 1 at first negative-going zero crossing of input signal. Once multivibrator 1 cleared, output goes to zero volts and not retriggered until next time positive input exceeds reference level. Since input signal noise at zero crossing does not exceed reference level, no effect on multivibrator 1 operation. Circuit fabricated using standard solid-state operational amplifiers, multivibrators, OR gates, and passive elements.

Wedged Fibers Suppress Feedback of Laser Beam

When injected laser is coupled into optical fiber, emission instabilities arise because of optical feedback losses from fiber into laser. Coupling efficiencies as high as 80 percent, however, obtained by shaping end of multimode fiber into obtuse-angled wedge. Because slanted sides eliminate back reflection, such wedged fiber achieves high coupling efficiency.

Suppression of Biodynamic Interference by Adaptive Filtering

Preliminary experimental results obtained in moving base simulator tests are presented. Both for pursuit and compensatory tracking tasks, a strong deterioration in tracking performance due to biodynamic interference is found. The use of adaptive filtering is shown to substantially alleviate these effects, resulting in a markedly improved tracking performance and reduction in task difficulty. The effect of simulator motion and of adaptive filtering on human operator describing functions is investigated. Adaptive filtering is found to substantially increase pilot gain and cross-over frequency, implying a more tight tracking behavior. The adaptive filter is found to be effective in particular for high-gain proportional dynamics, low display forcing function power and for pursuit tracking task configurations.

ELF wave production by an electron beam emitting rocket system and its suppression on auroral field lines - Evidence for Alfven and drift waves

Orthogonal probes on a free-flying plasma diagnostics payload are used to study ELF electric disturbances in the auroral ionosphere that are due to the injection of powerful electron beams. Frequency spectrograms are presented for various pitch angles, pulsing characteristics, and other properties of the injected beams; the large scale DC ionospheric convection electric field is measured, together with auroral particle precipitation, visual auroral forms, and ionospheric parameters. In view of the experimental results obtained, it is postulated that the observed ELF waves are in the Alfven and drift modes, and are generated by the positive vehicle potential during beam injection.

Suppression of stationary planetary waves by internal gravity waves in the mesophere

The supression of stationary planetary waves by internal gravity waves in the mesosphere is treated using a quasi-geostrophic model on a midlatitude beta-plane. The drag forces due to internal gravity waves are parameterized based on the wave-breaking assumption proposed by Lindzen (1981). In the present model the vertical propagation of internal gravity waves is affected not only by mean zonal wind distribution but also by eastward and northward velocity perturbations associated with stationary planetary waves, viz. the total local velocity. Only two stationary upward propagating internal gravity waves with the same horizontal wavelength 57 km, but whose wave number vectors are different are considered. One component has a wave number vector which is directed towards northeast, and the other is directed southeast. Planetary waves with zonal wave number 1 are considered, and the amplitudes of the geopotential height at the bottom (z=20km) are specified to be 50 m.

Active suppression of compressor instabilities

A strategy is proposed for controlling aerodynamic instabilities which limit the useful range of both axial and centrifugal turbomachines. Both local and global instabilities (incipient rotating stall and surge) are analyzed. A theory is developed which shows how an additional disturbance, driven from real time data measured within the machine, can be generated so as to realize a device with characteristics fundamentally different from those of the turbomachine without control; for the particular compressor analyzed, the control led to a 20 percent increase in the extent of the stable operating range. The use of structural dynamics to enhance stability is also discussed.

Comparator with noise suppression

An apparatus for generating a single pulse the first time only that a noisy cyclic signal exceeds a reference level during a half-cycle is disclosed. For the positive half of a cycle of the noisy cyclic signal, a comparator and a multivibrator produce a fixed voltage output when the noisy cyclic signal first exceeds the reference level. A multivibrator stops the production of the fixed voltage output when the noisy cyclic signal next passes the zero voltage level in the negative direction. Consequently, a single pulse is generated indicating that the signal exceeded the reference level during that half-cycle. The comparator and multi-vibrator produce pulses whenever the noisy cyclic signal exceeds the reference level during the negative half-cycle.
