Detailed observations of the plasma sheet during a substorm on April 24, 1979

Plasma, magnetic field, and energetic particle data obtained by ISEE 1 and 2 satellites for the April 24, 1979 substorm are studied in relation to the neutral line model and the boundary layer model. The ISEE 1 and 2 instruments and experiments utilized to collect the data are discussed. The major reconfiguration of the tail plasma and magnetic field plasma region, and the plasma ion flows observed support the neutral line model for interpreting substorms. The plasma ion distribution function and plasma flow are examined. The region of lobe-plasma sheet interface referred to as the separatrix layer is identified. The differences in times of plasma sheet dropout and recovery, and absence or presence of flux anisotropies are investigated. Energetic particle measurements are analyzed to study the relationship between energetic ions and plasma ions, and the velocity distributions. The data support the application of the neutral line model to the evaluation of substorms; however, the data are inconsistent with the boundary layer dynamics model.

Failure detection and accommodation in structural dynamics systems using analytic redundancy

The concept of analytic redundancy is extended to identify nonzero constant output failures in large spacecraft active control sensors and actuators, using a set of distributed sensors which do not nominally produce equivalent signals but are related through the structural dynamics of the system. The suboptimal technique uses a Sequential Probability Ratio Test on the residual sequence of a Kalman filter based on a modal structure model, to determine failure of a component based on an assumed failure hypothesis. The specific failure is identified and then the Kalman filter gains are reconfigured for the identified remaining working sensor set. Experimental data using an apparatus whose dynamics are representative of a large spacecraft show the nominal filter performance under failed and unfailed conditions.

Overview of Space Station attached payloads in the areas of solar physics, solar terrestrial physics, and plasma processes

This paper outlines the currently planned utilization of the Space Station to perform investigations in solar physics, solar terrestrial physics, and plasma physics. The investigations and instrumentation planned for the Solar Terrestrial Observatory (STO) and its associated Space Station accommodation requirements are discussed as well as the planned placement of the STO instruments and typical operational scenarios. In the area of plasma physics, some preliminary plans for scientific investigations and for the accommodation of a plasma physics facility attached to the Space Station are outlined. These preliminary experiment concepts use the space environment around the Space Station as an unconfined plasma laboratory. In solar physics, the initial instrument complement and associated accommodation requirements of the Advanced Solar Observatory are described. The planned evolutionary development of this observatory is outlined, making use of the Space Station capabilities for servicing and instrument reconfiguration.

The role of optimization in structural model refinement

To evaluate the role that optimization can play in structural model refinement, it is necessary to examine the existing environment for the structural design/structural modification process. The traditional approach to design, analysis, and modification is illustrated. Typically, a cyclical path is followed in evaluating and refining a structural system, with parallel paths existing between the real system and the analytical model of the system. The major failing of the existing approach is the rather weak link of communication between the cycle for the real system and the cycle for the analytical model. Only at the expense of much human effort can data sharing and comparative evaluation be enhanced for the two parallel cycles. Much of the difficulty can be traced to the lack of a user-friendly, rapidly reconfigurable engineering software environment for facilitating data and information exchange. Until this type of software environment becomes readily available to the majority of the engineering community, the role of optimization will not be able to reach its full potential and engineering productivity will continue to suffer. A key issue in current engineering design, analysis, and test is the definition and development of an integrated engineering software support capability. The data and solution flow for this type of integrated engineering analysis/refinement system is shown.

Real time identification of large space structures

Identification of frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes of large space structures (LSSs) are examined in real time. Real time processing allows for quick updates of model processing after a reconfiguration of structural failure. Recursive lattice least squares (RLLS) was selected as the baseline algorithm for the identification. Simulation results on a one dimensional LSS demonstrated that it provides good estimates, was not ill-conditioned in the presence of under-excited modes, allowed activity by a supervisory control system which prevented damage to the LSS or excessive drift, and was capable of real-time processing for typical LSS models. A suboptimal version of RLLS, which is equivalent to simulated parallel processing, was derived. A NASTRAN model of the dual keel U.S. space station was used to demonstrate the input/identification algorithm package in a more realistic simulation. Because the first eight flexible modes were very close together, the identification was much more difficult than in the simple examples. Even so, the model was accurately identified in real time.

CARE 3 user-friendly interface user's guide

CARE 3 predicts the unreliability of highly reliable reconfigurable fault-tolerant systems that include redundant computers or computer systems. CARE3MENU is a user-friendly interface used to create an input for the CARE 3 program. The CARE3MENU interface has been designed to minimize user input errors. Although a CARE3MENU session may be successfully completed and all parameters may be within specified limits or ranges, the CARE 3 program is not guaranteed to produce meaningful results if the user incorrectly interprets the CARE 3 stochastic model. The CARE3MENU User Guide provides complete information on how to create a CARE 3 model with the interface. The CARE3MENU interface runs under the VAX/VMS operating system.

Magnetic field re-arrangement after prominence eruption

It has long been known that magnetic reconnection plays a fundamental role in a variety of solar events. Although mainly invoked in flare problems, large scale loops interconnecting active regions, evolving coronal hole boundaries, the solar magnetic cycle itself, provide different evidence of phenomena which involve magnetic reconnection. A further example might be given by the magnetic field rearrangement which occurs after the eruption of a prominence. Since most often a prominence reforms after its disappearance and may be observed at about the same position it occupied before erupting, the magnetic field has to undergo a temporary disruption of relax back, via reconnection, to a configuration similar to the previous one. The above sequence of events is best observable in the case of two ribbon (2-R) flares but most probably is associated with all filament eruptions. Even if the explanation of the magnetic field rearrangement after 2-R flares in terms of reconnection is generally accepted, the lack of a 3-dimensional model capable of describing the field reconfiguration, has prevented, up to now, a thorough analysis of its topology as traced by H alpha/x ray loops. A numerical technique is presented which enables oneto predict and visualize the reconnected configuration, at any time, and therefore allows one to make a significant comparison of observations and model predictions throughout the whole process.

Intelligent fault-tolerant controllers

A system with fault tolerant controls is one that can detect, isolate, and estimate failures and perform necessary control reconfiguration based on this new information. Artificial intelligence (AI) is concerned with semantic processing, and it has evolved to include the topics of expert systems and machine learning. This research represents an attempt to apply AI to fault tolerant controls, hence, the name intelligent fault tolerant control (IFTC). A generic solution to the problem is sought, providing a system based on logic in addition to analytical tools, and offering machine learning capabilities. The advantages are that redundant system specific algorithms are no longer needed, that reasonableness is used to quickly choose the correct control strategy, and that the system can adapt to new situations by learning about its effects on system dynamics.

Solution of large linear systems of equations on the massively parallel processor

The Massively Parallel Processor (MPP) was designed as a special machine for specific applications in image processing. As a parallel machine, with a large number of processors that can be reconfigured in different combinations it is also applicable to other problems that require a large number of processors. The solution of linear systems of equations on the MPP is investigated. The solution times achieved are compared to those obtained with a serial machine and the performance of the MPP is discussed.

Two-dimensional nonsteady viscous flow simulation on the Navier-Stokes computer miniNode

The needs of large-scale scientific computation are outpacing the growth in performance of mainframe supercomputers. In particular, problems in fluid mechanics involving complex flow simulations require far more speed and capacity than that provided by current and proposed Class VI supercomputers. To address this concern, the Navier-Stokes Computer (NSC) was developed. The NSC is a parallel-processing machine, comprised of individual Nodes, each comparable in performance to current supercomputers. The global architecture is that of a hypercube, and a 128-Node NSC has been designed. New architectural features, such as a reconfigurable many-function ALU pipeline and a multifunction memory-ALU switch, have provided the capability to efficiently implement a wide range of algorithms. Efficient algorithms typically involve numerically intensive tasks, which often include conditional operations. These operations may be efficiently implemented on the NSC without, in general, sacrificing vector-processing speed. To illustrate the architecture, programming, and several of the capabilities of the NSC, the simulation of two-dimensional, nonsteady viscous flows on a prototype Node, called the miniNode, is presented.

Operational wind shear detection and warning - The 'CLAWS' experience at Denver and future objectives

An operational wind shear detection and warning experiment was conducted at Denver's Stapleton International Airport in summer 1984. Based on meteorological interpretation of scope displays from a Doppler weather radar, warnings were transmitted to the air traffic control tower via voice radio. Analyses of results indicated real skill in daily microburst forecasts and very short-term (less than 5-min) warnings. Wind shift advisories with 15-30 min forecasts, permitted more efficient runway reconfigurations. Potential fuel savings were estimated at $875,000/yr at Stapleton. The philosophy of future development toward an automated, operational system is discussed.

Design and development of a Space Station proximity operations research and development mockup

Proximity operations (Prox-Ops) on-orbit refers to all activities taking place within one km of the Space Station. Designing a Prox-Ops control station calls for a comprehensive systems approach which takes into account structural constraints, orbital dynamics including approach/departure flight paths, myriad human factors and other topics. This paper describes a reconfigurable full-scale mock-up of a Prox-Ops station constructed at Ames incorporating an array of windows (with dynamic star field, target vehicle(s), and head-up symbology), head-down perspective display of manned and unmanned vehicles, voice- actuated 'electronic checklist', computer-generated voice system, expert system (to help diagnose subsystem malfunctions), and other displays and controls. The facility is used for demonstrations of selected Prox-Ops approach scenarios, human factors research (work-load assessment, determining external vision envelope requirements, head-down and head-up symbology design, voice synthesis and recognition research, etc.) and development of engineering design guidelines for future module interiors.

Plant and animal accommodation for Space Station Laboratory

An extended study has been conducted with the goals of defining and analyzing relevant parameters and significant tradeoffs for the accommodation of nonhuman research aboard the NASA Space Station, as well as conducting tradeoff analyses for orbital reconfiguring or reoutfitting of the laboratory facility and developing laboratory designs and program plans. The two items exerting the greatest influence on nonhuman life sciences research were identified as the centrifuge and the specimen environmental control and life support system; both should be installed on the ground rather than in orbit.

Solar wind control of the magnetotail

Observations of the geomagnetic tail configuration and its changes in response to the solar wind plasma and the magnetic field are discussed. Particular consideration is given to the role of the interplanetary B(y) component, which is believed to control the location of field lines passing through the tail boundary and thereby the location of local plasma entry. It is shown how the energetically insignificant interplanetary B(z) component controls the degree to which energy is added to the magnetosphere and stored in the tail, and the manner in which internal processes such as tail reconnection release this energy. It is concluded that the magnetotail plays an important role in magnetospheric substorms, although a directly driven component also makes a contribution, particularly prior to intensifications that are associated with tail reconfigurations.

Operating characteristics of a 10 kW xenon ion propulsion module

Performance testing of a two-engine functional model xenon ion propulsion module is described. Use of highly modified J-series 30 cm ion engines reconfigured for xenon propellant, a computer controlled operating system, and precise flow control system are shown to result in very reliable ion module operation at high input power levels. Ion engine operation at a nominal 4.0 ampere beam current and 30.0 volt discharge gives a specific impulse of 3310 sec, a total engine efficiency of 64.3 percent, and a thrust-to-power ratio of 39.5 mN/kW at an input power level of 5.10 kW. These modified J series ion engines are shown to be capable of throttling over an 8:1 range from a power level of 5.48 kW at 3285 sec to a power level of 0.70 kW at 1856 sec. In addition, complete ion engine performance mapping of important system level parameters such as thrust, specific impulse, efficiency and thrust-to-power ratio are presented.

Literature review and experimental results for a cylinder with perforations and protrusions at high Reynolds numbers

The NASA Langley Low Turbulence Pressure Tunnel has been used to conduct an experimental study of the flow around a series of circular cylinders; the models used consisted of a baseline, smooth cylinder together with a cylinder that could be reconfigured with six different arrangements of two types of surface irregularity. Mean lift and drag forces were measured on all seven model configurations, and correlations were made between unsteady pressure in the wake region and fluctuating lift forces, in order to identify coherent structures.
