W+D Charm Jet Fragmentation

Using ATLAS Run 2 data, proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV center of mass energy are analyzed to measure the properties of Charmed particle fragmentation. The process $pp\rightarrow &W;\pmc$, where the c-quark fragments to a $D^+$ hadron is used. Since quarks are not directly seen from the collision, a jet of particles containing the charmed hadron is used. This is accomplished by comparing the distribution of $z_T$, the ratio of the transverse momentum of the $D^+$ to that of the track jet containing the hadron, to several Monte Carlo generators.

sPHENIX heavy flavor jet tagging studies in p+p at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200~GeV$

Heavy-flavor jets, which are initiated from heavy quarks, are ideal probes for studying flavor dependent parton energy loss. We report on the performance of jet flavor tagging using two Neural Network Machine Learning (ML) models: the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model and an Attention-based Neural Network, in simulations of 200 GeV p + p collisions. The tagging performance of bottom quark initiated jets with both ML models surpasses that of the traditional cut-based method. Technical details, including sample and kinematic variable selections, the machine learning training and testing setup with parameter tuning, and outcome comparisons, will be discussed.

The Collins-Soper Kernel from Lattice QCD

I will present the first complete determination of the quark Collins-Soper kernel, which relates TMDs at different rapidity scales, using lattice QCD and including systematic control of quark mass, operator mixing, and discretization effects. Next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic matching is used to match lattice-calculable distributions to the corresponding TMDs. The continuum-extrapolated lattice QCD results are consistent with several recent phenomenological parametrizations of the Collins-Soper kernel and are precise enough to disfavor other parametrizations. I will also discuss a first exploration of the gluon Collins-Soper kernel.

Baryon $\sigma$ terms in SU(3) BChPT x 1/N c

ChPT and the 1/N c expansion provide systematic frameworks for the strong interactions at low energy. A combined framework of both expansions has been developed and applied for baryons with three light-quark-flavors. The small scale expansion of the combined approach is identified as the ξ-expansion, in which the power counting of the expansions is linked according to O(p) = O(1/N c ) = O(ξ). The physical baryon masses as well as lattice QCD baryon masses for different quark mass masses are analyzed to O(ξ 3 ) in that framework. σ terms are addressed using the Feynman Hellmann theorem. For the nucleon, a useful connection between the deviation of the Gell-Mann-Okubo relation and the σ term σ 8N associated with the scalar density $\bar{u}u+\bar{d}d-2\bar{s}s$ is identified. In particular, the deviation from the tree level relation σ 8N = $\frac{1}{3}$(2m N -m Σ -m Ξ ), which gives rise to the so called σ-term puzzle, is studied in the ξ-expansion. A large correction non-analytic in ξ results for that relation, making plausible the resolution of the puzzle. Issues with the determination of the strangeness σ terms are discussed, emphasizing the need for lattice calculations at smaller m s for better understanding the range of validity of the effective theory. The analysis presented here leads to σ πN = 69(10) MeV and σ πΔ = 60(10) MeV.

Recent Standard Model measurements

A selection of recent Standard Model measurements from ATLAS, CMS, D0 and HERA Collaborations is presented. The topics include studies of QCD with jets, photons and vector bosons as well as the latest measurements of the strong coupling constant. The status and prospects of precision measurements of the $W$-boson mass, the mixing angle of the electroweak interaction and the top-quark mass are also presented followed by recent results in the top-quark sector, on multibosons produced inclusively and on the study of the vector boson fusion and scattering. These measurements and studies provide stringent tests of the Standard Model. Deviations with respect to the Standard Model predictions are valuable probes of potential New Physics effects.

Jet charge modification in dense QCD matter

In these proceedings we report a recent calculation of the jet charge modification in heavy-ion relative to proton collisions at the LHC. Jets have played an essential role in constraining theories of in-medium parton shower evolution and in determining the properties of the quark-gluon plasma created in ultra-relativistic nuclear reactions. It is important to extend these studies to flavor-tagged jets and explore observables that are sensitive to their partonic origin. The average jet charge, introduced early on in the history of quantum chromodynamics, is a proxy for the electric charge of the quark or gluon that initiates the jet. In the framework of soft-collinear effective theory, we show how to evaluate the jet charge in a dense strongly-interacting matter environments. We identify observables that can isolate the contribution of in-medium branching from isospin effects and present predictions for the transverse momentum dependence of the jet charge distribution in nucleus-nucleus collisions and its modification relative to the proton case.

Fifty ways to build a deuteron: a variational calculation of two-nucleon systems

A variational study of two-nucleon systems with lattice quantum chromodynamics is performed using a wide range of interpolating operators: dibaryon operators built from products of momentum-projected nucleons, hexaquark operators built from six spatially localized quarks, and quasi-local operators inspired by two-nucleon bound-state wavefunctions in nuclear effective field theories. Correlation-function matrices involving products of these operators are constructed by computing timeslice-to-all quark propagators with sparsening techniques. Comparisons between results obtained using the same gauge-field ensemble but different interpolating-operator sets demonstrate that interpolating-operator dependence can lead to significant effects on the two-nucleon energy spectra obtained using both variational and non-variational methods.

Shallow-and-Deep Inelastic Scattering with Neutrinos

In ν/ν-Nucleon/Nucleus interactions Shallow Inelastic Scattering (SIS) is technically defined interms of the four-momentum transfer to the hadronic system as non-resonant meson productionwith predominantly lower Q 2 . This non-resonant meson production intermixes with resonantmeson production in a regime of similar effective hadronic mass W of the interaction. As Q 2 grows non-resonant interactions begin to take place with quarks within the nucleon indicating thestart of Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS). To essentially separate this resonant plus non-resonantmeson production from DIS quark-fragmented meson production, a cut of 2 GeV in W of theinteractions is generally introduced. However, since experimentally mesons from resonance decaycannot be separated from non-resonant produced mesons, SIS for all practical purposes is definedas inclusive meson production that includes non-resonant plus resonant meson production andthe interference between them. NOTE, this is a mildly modified introduction and overview takenfrom the detailed summary of this topic referenced in the introduction.

Measurement of Neutral Current Elastic Cross Section in MicroBooNE

The MicroBooNE experiment is an 85 ton active volume liquid-argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beamline. MicroBooNE’s ability to detect low-energy protons allows us to study single proton events with a four-momentum transfer squared, Q$^2$, as low as 0.10 GeV$^2$. We present a measurement of the flux-averaged neutral-current elastic differential cross sections for neutrinos scattering on argon as a function of Q$^2$, proton momentum and proton angle with respect to the direction of the neutrino beam. This is our first step towards extracting the strange quark contribution to the axial form factor, which is not only the least-constrained contribution to the neutral-current elastic scattering cross section but is also crucial for understanding the strange quark contribution to the proton spin.

Transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions for longitudinally polarized nucleons from domain wall fermion calculations at the physical pion mass

Previous Lattice QCD calculations of nucleon transverse momentum-dependent parton distribu?tions (TMDs) focused on the case of transversely polarized nucleons, and thus did not encompass two leading-twist TMDs associated with longitudinal polarization, namely, the helicity TMD and the worm-gear TMD corresponding to transversely polarized quarks in a longitudinally polarized nucleon. Based on a definition of TMDs via hadronic matrix elements of quark bilocal operators containing staple-shaped gauge connections, TMD observables characterizing the aforementioned two TMDs are evaluated, utilizing an RBC/UKQCD domain wall fermion ensemble at the physical pion mass.

Update on flavor diagonal nucleon charges

This talk provides an update on the calculation of matrix elements of flavor diagonal axial, scalar and tensor quark bilinear operators between the nucleon ground state. The simulations are done using Wilson-clover fermions on a sea of eight 2+1+1-flavor HISQ ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration. We discuss the signal in the sum of the connected and disconnected contributions for the up, down and strange quarks, control over fits to remove excited state contamination, and the simultaneous chiral-continuum fit used to extract the charges.

Exploring Photoproduced $\eta^{(}{'^{)}} \pi^{0}$ Systems in the Search for Exotic Hadrons at GlueX

Physicists have long been captivated by the spectrum of hadrons, aiming to better comprehend the fundamental building blocks of matter. While various experiments have laid the foundation for this spectrum, Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics has revealed new states with forbidden JPC values. This has challenged the constituent quark model, suggesting spin-exotic hybrid mesons that could reshape our understanding of hadronic structure and quark-gluon interactions through gluonic excitations. The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has played a pivotal role in this pursuit, with its efforts centered on analyzing photoproduction data. In order to investigate the lightest predicted exotic state with JPC=1−+ , known as the π1(1600) meson, significant attention has been directed towards both ηπ0 and η′π0 systems. Detailed ongoing amplitude analysis studies of γp→η(′)π0p , leveraging the polarization of the photon beam at the GlueX experiment will be highlighted. Furthermore, first studies on the moments of angular distributions for these channels will also be shown, along with the differential cross section results for the a2(1320) meson. These results aid in identifying the dominant production mechanisms and offer valuable insights into complex hadronic interactions. Ultimately, this contributes to the ongoing search for and future identification of exotic hybrid meson candidates.

Beam Commissioning Result of Polarized Target at SpinQuest

SpinQuest is a fixed-target experiment at Fermilab to measure the Drell-Yan process using transversely polarized NH$_3$ and ND$_3$ targets and unpolarized 120-GeV proton beam. In the Drell-Yan process, a quark in one scattering hadron and an anti-quark in the other hadron annihilate into a virtual photon and then decay into a muon (lepton) pair. The angular distribution of final-state muon pairs with respect to the target polarization is sensitive to the Sivers function of light antiquarks in the nucleon, which is one of the eight Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions. The intensity of the proton beam is as high as $10^{12}$ protons/second, in order to accumulate the required statistics of Drell-Yan events. The polarized target system at SpinQuest has been carefully designed to accommodate such a high beam intensity. It is equipped with an evaporation refrigerator with a cooling power of around 5 W at 1 K. The target temperature is maintained at 1 K even under heat load caused by the proton beam and the DNP microwave. The target system and the spectrometer were commissioned with the proton beam from May through July 2024. The experimental setup of SpinQuest and the performance of the target system during the beam commissioning is reported.

The pNab experiment and the quest for ever better neutron beam polarization

The Nab and pNAB collaborations are conducting a program of studies of free neutron beta decay, with the primary goal of testing the unitarity of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix that describes quark mixing due to the weak interaction. For this purpose, a large, novel electromagnetic spectrometer, the Nab spectrometer, has been designed, built, and placed in use to determine the correlation coefficients in unpolarized neutron beta decay: "a", the neutrino-electron correlation coefficient; and "b", the Fierz term. The subject of this paper is pNAB, the second phase of the program, that will deploy the same spectrometer with a polarized neutron beam to determine "A", the beta asymmetry; and "B", the neutrino asymmetry coefficients. A focus of this paper will be on the strategies to provide a high and precisely known neutron beam polarization.

Quarkonium Polarization Kinetic Equation from Open Quantum Systems and Effective Field Theories

Recent measurements of polarization phenomena in relativistic heavy ion collisions have aroused a great interest in understanding dynamical spin evolution of the QCD matter. In particular, the spin alignment signature of J/ψ has been recently observed in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC, which may infer nontrivial spin transport of quarkonia in quark gluon plasmas. Motivated by this, we study the spin-dependent in-medium dynamics of quarkonia by using the potential nonrelativistic QCD (pNRQCD) and the open quantum system framework. By applying the Markovian approximation and Wigner transformation, we systematically derive the Boltzmann transport equation for vector quarkonia with polarization dependence in the quantum optical limit. As opposed to the previous study for the spin-independent case where the collision terms depend on chromoelectric correlators, the new kinetic equation incorporates gauge invariant correlators of chromomagnetic fields that determine the recombination and dissociation terms with polarization dependence at the order we are working in the multipole expansion. In the quantum Brownian motion limit, the Lindblad equation with new transport coefficients defined in terms of the chromomagnetic field correlators have also been derived. Our formalism is generic and valid for both weakly-coupled and strongly-coupled quark gluon plasmas. It may be further applied to study spin alignment of vector quarkonia in heavy ion collisions.

J/Psi Photoproduction Near Threshold With CLAS12

The structure of the proton is comprised of quarks and a sea of gluons. A mechanism that can extract the characteristics of the hidden-color correlations of the nuclear wavefunction is the production of charm near threshold. Due to the fact that momentum transfer is large near threshold in the production of J/ψ , all three valence quarks must act coherently to ex- change energy for the reaction to occur. Models have been developed to predict the nature of J/ψ photoproduction at these specific energies. These include production mechanisms with the two-gluon and three-gluon exchanges. The transferred momentum dependence of the differential cross sections are sensitive to the gluonic form factors, which describe the distribution of color charge in the proton. The CLAS12 detector is capable of measuring J/ψ photoproduction at the energy range close to the threshold. Work showcased in this dissertation encompasses the preparation of the CLAS12 experiments, including the optimization of tracking reconstruction through the study of the Torus magnetic field. In terms of software, contributions were made to the CLAS12 Event Builder, a key stage of reconstruction where event-by-event information is summarized for efficient data analysis. After the run periods were successfully completed, analysis of the RG-A data commenced and an analysis framework was developed to measure the differential and total cross sections of J/ψ photoproduction in Hall B.

Spin Sum Rule of the Nucleon in the QCD Instanton Vacuum

We briefly review some essential aspects of the QCD instanton vacuum in relation to the quantum breaking of conformal symmetry, the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry, and the axial U(1) anomaly. The anomaly causes the intrinsic nucleon spin to transmute to the vacuum topological charge by quantum tunneling. We use Ji′s invariant spin decomposition to discuss the spin budget of the nucleon as a quark–diquark state in the QCD instanton vacuum. A measure of the intrinsic quark spin of the nucleon is a measure of the quenched topological susceptibility of the QCD instanton vacuum.
