A high-throughput experimentation platform for data-driven discovery in electrochemistry

Automating electrochemical analyses combined with artificial intelligence is poised to accelerate discoveries in renewable energy sciences and technologies. This study presents an automated high-throughput electrochemical characterization (AHTech) platform as a cost-effective and versatile tool for rapidly assessing liquid analytes. The Python-controlled platform combines a liquid handling robot, potentiostat, and customizable microelectrode bundles for diverse, reproducible electrochemical measurements in microtiter plates, minimizing chemical consumption and manual effort. To showcase the capability of AHTech, we screened a library of 180 small molecules as electrolyte additives for aqueous zinc metal batteries, generating data for training machine learning models to predict Coulombic efficiencies. Key molecular features governing additive performance were elucidated using Shapley Additive exPlanations and Spearman’s correlation, pinpointing high-performance candidates like cis-4-hydroxy-d-proline, which achieved an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.52% over 200 cycles. The workflow established herein is highly adaptable, offering a powerful framework for accelerating the exploration and optimization of extensive chemical spaces across diverse energy storage and conversion fields.

Technology & Design Innovations to Maximize the Reduction Effect on DCFC Unit Cost Economics (Max‐REDUCE)

With the high cost and reliability issues of DCFC infrastructure the project specifically addressed the needs of innovating on the AC to DC power conversion. We proved the integration of a new power module into existing charger units, and that theoretical educational work on single stage energy conversion is commercially viable, and a reduced cost compared to existing methods. Our A sample shown 3 PH 480VAC 60hz to 350VDC 8.5kW power transfer, and our software and simulation proved efficiency greater than 97% from 20kW to > 60kW, over the DC output voltage range 200 – 1200V. The project was stopped before we could implement B sample and execute full power testing, validation and integration into a demonstration charger (budget period 3).

Three strategies for conservation

The three strategies considered as energy conservation oriented were given: national energy conservation, electrification, and diversification. The first one applies to the near term period (now-1985), the second one to the mid term (1985-2000), and the third one to the far term (2000- ). The rest of this section was focussed on the near term period. The following proposed actions were considered: (1) roll back the price of newly discovered oil, (2) force conversion of many power plants from gas and oil to coal, (3) freeze gasoline production for three years at 1972 levels, (4) mandate automobile mileage requirements, (5) require industry to improve energy efficiency, and (6) require manufacture of household appliances with greater efficiency. Each of these six actions was described and discussed in more detail.

Tandem photovoltaic solar cells and increased solar energy conversion efficiency

Tandem photovoltaic cells, as proposed by Jackson (1955) to increase the efficiency of solar energy conversion, involve the construction of a system of stacked p/n homojunction photovoltaic cells composed of different semiconductors. It had been pointed out by critics, however, that the total power which could be extracted from the cells in the stack placed side by side was substantially greater than the power obtained from the stacked cells. A reexamination of the tandem cell concept in view of the development of the past few years is conducted. It is concluded that the use of tandem cell systems in flat plate collectors, as originally envisioned by Jackson, may yet become feasible as a result of the development of economically acceptable solar cells for large scale terrestrial power generation.

Radioisotope Thermophotovoltaic (RTPV) Power System for Space Applications

Thermophotovoltaic (RTV) energy conversion, coupled to the radioisotope powered General Purpose Heat Source (GPHS) is currently being developed by NASA. The goal of the program is to develop a 100 watt electrical power system with an efficient of 20%. Special control is the key element in obtaining an efficient system. Results presented show that excellent spectral control can be achieved so that reaching the goal of 20% efficiency is possible. Excellent spectral control is achieved by using a combination of selective emitters and optical filters and by eliminating radiation leakage from the optical cavity.

Electric Aircraft Cooling with Bio-Inspired Exergy Management

Future air vehicles will increasingly incorporate electrical powertrains that require very tight system-level integration of power, propulsion, thermal, fault protection, and airframe technologies. This chapter provides an overview of a new category of thermal energy conversion technology and describes the development of the resulting Thermal Recovery Exergy Efficient System, TREES. TREES can be used to enable a fully solid-state integrated thermal and fault management electric aircraft protection system, while synergistically managing and recycling both the low-grade waste heat from electrical components and the high-grade waste heat from engine components. This is achieved with exergy amplification of the powertrain waste heat, a new class of fast flight-weight breakers, a new class of long variable-conductance heat pipes with multiple switchable condensers, a new class of turbofan-integrated heat exchangers, and a gradient-based powertrain system optimizer. This approach is like the human body’s thermal management system in which the heart, arteries, and veins are analogous to the turbofan, acoustic tubes, and heat pipes proposed herein.

Bandwidth Efficient Wireless Digital Modem Developed

NASA Lewis Research Center has developed a digital approach for broadcasting highfidelity audio (nearly compact disk (CD) quality sound) in the commercial frequencymodulated (FM) broadcast band. This digital approach provides a means of achieving high data transmission rates with low hardware complexity--including low mass, size, and power consumption. Lewis has completed the design and prototype development of a bandwidth-efficient digital modem (modulator and demodulator) that uses a spectrally efficient modulation scheme: 16-ary rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation, or 16- ary QAM. The digital implementation is based strictly on inexpensive, commercial off-theshelf digital signal processing (DSP) hardware to perform up and down conversions and pulse shaping. The digital modem transmits data at rates up to 76 kilobits per second (kbps), which is almost 3 times faster than standard 28.8-kbps telephone modems. In addition, the modem offers improved power and spectral performance, flexible operation, and low-cost implementation.

Novel Space-based Solar Power Technologies and Architectures for Earth and Beyond

Research, development and studies of novel space-based solar power systems, technologies and architectures for Earth and beyond are needed to reduce the cost of clean electrical power for terrestrial use and to provide a stepping stone for providing an abundance of power in space, i.e., manufacturing facilities, tourist facilities, delivery of power between objects in space, and between space and surface sites. The architectures, technologies and systems needed for space to Earth applications may also be used for in-space applications. Advances in key technologies, i.e., power generation, power management and distribution, power beaming and conversion of beamed power are needed to achieve the objectives of both terrestrial and extraterrestrial applications. Power beaming or wireless power transmission (WPT) can involve lasers or microwaves along with the associated power interfaces. Microwave and laser transmission techniques have been studied with several promising approaches to safe and efficient WPT identified. These investigations have included microwave phased array transmitters, as well as laser transmission and associated optics. There is a need to produce "proof-of-concept" validation of critical WPT technologies for both the near-term, as well as far-term applications. Investments may be harvested in near-term beam safe demonstrations of commercial WPT applications. Receiving sites (users) include ground-based stations for terrestrial electrical power, orbital sites to provide power for satellites and other platforms, future space elevator systems, space vehicle propulsion, and space to surface sites. This paper briefly discusses achieving a promising approach to the solar power generation and beamed power conversion. The approach is based on a unique high-power solar concentrator array called Stretched Lens Array (SLA) for both solar power generation and beamed power conversion. Since both versions (solar and laser) of SLA use many identical components (only the photovoltaic cells need to be different), economies of manufacturing and scale may be realized by using SLA on both ends of the laser power beaming system in a space solar power application. Near-term uses of this SLA-laser-SLA system may include terrestrial and space exploration in near Earth space. Later uses may include beamed power for bases or vehicles on Mars.

Free-Piston Stirling Power Conversion Unit for Fission Surface Power, Phase I Final Report

This report summarizes the design of a 12 kW dual opposed free-piston Stirling convertor and controller for potential future use in space missions. The convertor is heated via a pumped NaK loop and cooling is provided by a pumped water circuit. Convertor efficiency is projected at 27 percent (AC electrical out/heat in). The controller converts the AC electrical output to 120 Vdc and is projected at 91 percent efficiency. A mechanically simple arrangement, based on proven technology, was selected in which the piston is resonated almost entirely by the working space pressure swing, while the displacer is resonated by planar mechanical springs in the bounce space.

1.1 eV GaInAs Cell Development for Dual-Use Solar and 1070 nm Laser Power Converters

Dual-use power converter cells can receive solar and laser power simultaneously to generate current, an application relevant to space and terrestrial industries. This study investigates two concepts of solar cells optimized for dual-use 1070 nm laser and solar power conversion, a single-junction and triple-junction cell. Because it is bandgap-tuned for a 1070 nm laser, the 1.1 eV junction is incorporated into each of the two designs, making its development key to the success of both concepts. Efficiency data for a one junction GaInAs cell demonstrates a laser conversion efficiency of 38% at 1070nm wavelength without an anti-reflection coating. However, the single-junction device requires optimization to reduce short wavelength absorption of the broad solar spectrum. In both devices, the graded buffer layers in the GaInAs cell affects the cell's performance by reducing threading dislocations in the active junction. However, the buffer in the three-junction device also acts as a lateral transport layer and so affects the fill factor depending on its sheet resistance. By varying the buffer thickness, we demonstrate a direct relationship between buffer thickness and sheet resistance reduction, while considering implications to open-circuit voltages. We also performed resistance modeling to determine the optimal grid spacing and thickness of the grid fingers to minimize losses due to sheet resistance and grid shading.

Microwave power tubes for space applications

Feasibility evaluations of klystron amplifiers for conversion of solar power in synchronous orbit into microwave power at 2.4 GHz and transmission to earth were carried out. It was found that amplitrons and klystrons, using a depressed collector augmentation, can achieve efficiencies in excess of 80% if the power output is kept higher than 50 kW. Body wound selenoid provides the needed beam-focusing field. Narrow bandwidth requirements permit a low cathode loading density of 0.5 A/sq cm produced at approximately 850 centigrades. Emission tests indicate a potential life expectancy of 20 to 40 years.

Electrode materials, the cesium plasma drop (the difference between the barrier index and the collector work function), DEC voltage/current characteristics, conversion efficiency, and operating temperatures are discussed. Attention is centered on nuclear reactor system thermionic DEC devices, for in-core or out-of-core operation. Thermionic fuel elements, the radiation shield, power conditions, and a waste heat rejection system are considered among the thermionic DEC system components. Terrestrial applications include topping power systems in fossil fuel and solar power generation.

An Overview of Power Capability Requirements for Exploration Missions

Advanced power is one of the key capabilities that will be needed to achieve NASA's missions of exploration and scientific advancement. Significant gaps exist in advanced power capabilities that are on the critical path to enabling human exploration beyond Earth orbit and advanced robotic exploration of the solar system. Focused studies and investment are needed to answer key development issues for all candidate technologies before down-selection. The viability of candidate power technology alternatives will be a major factor in determining what exploration mission architectures are possible. Achieving the capabilities needed to enable the CEV, Moon, and Mars missions is dependent on adequate funding. Focused investment in advanced power technologies for human and robotic exploration missions is imperative now to reduce risk and to make informed decisions on potential exploration mission decisions beginning in 2008. This investment would begin the long lead-time needed to develop capabilities for human exploration missions in the 2015 to 2030 timeframe. This paper identifies some of the key technologies that will be needed to fill these power capability gaps. Recommendations are offered to address capability gaps in advanced power for Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) power, surface nuclear power systems, surface mobile power systems, high efficiency power systems, and space transportation power systems. These capabilities fill gaps that are on the critical path to enabling robotic and human exploration missions. The recommendations address the following critical technology areas: Energy Conversion, Energy Storage, and Power Management and Distribution.

Non-contact Creep Resistance Measurement for Ultra-high temperature Materials

Continuing pressures for higher performance and efficiency in propulsion are driving ever more demanding needs for high-temperature materials. Some immediate applications in spaceflight include combustion chambers for advanced chemical rockets and turbomachinery for jet engines and power conversion in nuclear-electric propulsion. In the case of rockets, the combination of high stresses and high temperatures make the characterization of creep properties very important. Creep is even more important in the turbomachinery, where a long service life is an additional constraint. Some very high-temperature materials are being developed, including platinum group metals, carbides, borides, and silicides. But the measurement of creep properties at very high temperatures is itself problematic, because the testing instrument must operate at such high temperatures. Conventional techniques are limited to about 1700 C. A new, containerless technique for measuring creep deformation has been developed. This technique is based on electrostatic levitation (ESL) of a spherical sample, which is heated to the measurement temperature and rotated at a rate such that the centrifugal acceleration causes creep deformation. Creep of samples has been demonstrated at up to 2300 C in the ESL facility at NASA MSFC, while ESL itself has been applied at over 3000 C, and has no theoretical maximum temperature. The preliminary results and future directions of this NASA-funded research collaboration will be presented.

A Highly Sensitive Multi-Element HgCdTe E-APD Detector for IPDA Lidar Applications

An HgCdTe electron avalanche photodiode (e-APD) detector has been developed for lidar receivers, one application of which is integrated path differential absorption lidar measurements of such atmospheric trace gases as CO2 and CH4. The HgCdTe APD has a wide, visible to mid-wave-infrared, spectral response, high dynamic range, substantially improved sensitivity, and an expected improvement in operational lifetime. A demonstration sensor-chip assembly consisting of a 4.3 lm cutoff HgCdTe 4 9 4 APD detector array with 80 micrometer pitch pixels and a custom complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor readout integrated circuit was developed. For one typical array the APD gain was 654 at 12 V with corresponding gain normalized dark currents ranging from 1.2 fA to 3.2 fA. The 4 9 4 detector system was characterized at 77 K with a 1.55 micrometer wavelength, 1 microsecond wide, laser pulse. The measured unit gain detector photon conversion efficiency was 91.1%. At 11 V bias the mean measured APD gain at 77 K was 307.8 with sigma/mean uniformity of 1.23%. The average, noise-bandwidth normalized, system noise-equivalent power (NEP) was 1.04 fW/Hz(exp 1/2) with a sigma/mean of 3.8%. The measured, electronics-limited, bandwidth of 6.8 MHz was more than adequate for 1 microsecond pulse detection. The system had an NEP (3 MHz) of 0.4 fW/Hz(exp 1/2) at 12 V APD bias and a linear dynamic range close to 1000. A gain-independent quantum-limited SNR of 80% of full theoretical was indicative of a gain-independent excess noise factor very close to 1.0 and the expected APD mode quantum efficiency.

A Double-Wiebe Function for Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition Combustion Using Reformate Diesel

Abstract Reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion has previously been proposed as a method to achieve high fuel conversion efficiency and reduce engine emissions. A single-fuel RCCI combustion strategy can have decreased fuel system complexity by using a reformate fuel for port fuel injection and the parent fuel (diesel) for direct injection. This paper presents a one-dimensional computational model of a compression ignition engine with single-fuel RCCI. A Wiebe function is used to predict the combustion process by representing the mass fraction burned (MFB) on a crank angle resolved basis. One single-Wiebe function (SWF) and two double-Wiebe functions(DWFs) were fitted to experimentally derive MFB data using the least-square method. The fitted results were compared with MFBs calculated from experimental data to verify the accuracy. The SWF did not fully capture the MFB curve with high fidelity while the detailed DWF captured the MFB curve within a root mean square error of 1.4%. The reduced double-Wiebe function (RDWF) also resulted in a predicted combustion profile with similar accuracy. Hence, the RDWF was used in a GT-power thermodynamic study to understand the effects of the low-temperature heat release (LTHR) fraction and combustion phasing on combustion characteristics. At optimum phasing of 5–10 crank angle degree after the top dead center, increasing the LTHR fraction from 20% to 60% resulted in the fuel conversion efficiency increasing from 39.5% to 41.1%, thus suggesting that the reformate fuel-based RCCI strategy is viable to unlock improved combustion performance.

Startup regime of high-efficiency tapering-enhanced FEL oscillator

In this paper, we present a design of a high-efficiency high-gain free-electron laser oscillator based on the use of a strongly tapered undulator for extracting energy from high-brightness electron beams. We provide an analytical model of the setup followed by numerical simulations for lasing at the wavelength of 13.5 nm. We discuss the optimization of the system in steady state and the conditions necessary for the pass-per-pass buildup of the power from shot noise level. We propose the use of fast phase shifters as a way to accelerate the buildup. Finally, we present time-dependent simulations of the oscillator and discuss the role of spectral filtering. The optimized working point yields a total energy conversion efficiency from the electron beam to output radiation above 1% at the wavelength of 13.5 nm.
