The thermal heliotrope is a passive solar-array orientation device containing a bimetallic helix that rotates when activated by solar energy. The rate and extent of the rotation depends upon the properties of the two metals and the temperature of the helix. An energy-balance analysis is performed to determine the temperature distribution in the helix. By initially restricting the analysis, a simplified equation governing the response of the heliotrope is obtained. In order to gain insight into the response of the heliotrope, a series of experiments were performed. The results of these tests and the implications are presented.
Ten, primarily test oriented, computer languages reviewed during the phase 1 study effort are described. Fifty characteristics of ATOLL, ATLAS, and CLASP are compared. Unique characteristics of the other languages, including deficiencies, problems, safeguards, and checking provisions are identified. Programming aids related to these languages are reported, and the conclusions resulting from this phase of the study are discussed. A glossary and bibliography are included. Proceedings of conference on animal orientation and navigation capabilities
The application of statistical methods for determining the areas of animal orientation and navigation are discussed. The method employed is limited to the two-dimensional case. Various tests for determining the validity of the statistical analysis are presented. Mathematical models are included to support the theoretical considerations and tables of data are developed to show the value of information obtained by statistical analysis.
A conditioning method was used to investigate the orientational responses of ducks as affected by manipulations of the stellar patterns in a planetarium. Under simulated natural skies it was possible to train a bird to a particular direction successively under all positions of the rotating sphere at a constant latitude. The responses were independent of the phase relationships between local time, season, and appearance of the sky provided the bird had been trained under the particular sector of the sphere some time before.
A system designed to acquire and process data describing locomotor behavior of fish is described. Data are recorded in relation to the fish's response to olfactory stimuli. It was concluded that fish orientation is based on rheataxis or chemotropotaxis.
A detailed description is given of experiments made to determine the senses and chemical cues used by salamanders for homing orientation. Sensory impairment and cue manipulative techniques were used in the investigation. All experiments were carried out at night. Results show that sense impaired animals did not home as readily as those who were blind but retained their sensory mechanism. This fact suggests that the olfactory mechanism is necessary for homing in the salamander. It was determined that after the impaired salamander regenerated its sensory mechanism it too returned home. It was concluded that homing ability in salamanders is direction independent, distant dependent, and vision independent.
A new and rugged orientation system for use in gamma and X-ray astronomy has been built and test flown with favorable results. This system utilizes a versatile equatorial mount for pointing detectors with weights of up to 400 lbs.
The current distribution and impedance of a thin cylindrical antenna with parallel orientation to the static magnetic field of a lossy magnetoplasma is calculated with the method of moments. The electric field produced by an infinitesimal current source is first derived. Results are presented for a wide range of plasma parameters. Reasonable answers are obtained for all cases except for the overdense hyperbolic case. A discussion of the numerical stability is included which not only applies to this problem but other applications of the method of moments.
With the use of a power integral formulation, a study is made of the vlf/elf radiation patterns of arbitrarily oriented electric and magnetic dipoles in a cold lossless multicomponent magnetoplasma. Expressions for the ray patterns are initially developed that apply for arbitrary values of driving frequency, static magnetic-field strength, plasma density, and composition. These expressions are subsequently specialized to vlf/elf radiation in a plasma modeled on the magnetosphere. A series of representative pattern plots are presented for frequencies between the proton and electron gyrofrequencies. These patterns illustrate the fact that focusing effects that arise from the geometrical properties of the refractive index surface tend to dominate the radiation distribution over the entire range from the electron gyrofrequency to 4.6 times the proton gyrofrequency. It is concluded that focusing effects should be of significant importance in the design of a vlf/elf satellite transmitting system in the magnetosphere.
