Electrically conductive, black thermal control coatings for space craft application. II - Silicone matrix formulation

Five black electrically conductive thermal-control coatings have been formulated and tested for application on the Galileo spacecraft. The coatings consisted of organic and inorganic systems applied on titanium and aluminum surfaces. The coatings were tested under simulated space environment conditions. Coated specimens were subjected to thermal radiation and convective and conductive heating from -196 to 538 C. Mechanical, physical, thermal, electrical, and optical characteristics, formulation, mixing, application, surface preparation of substrates, and a method of determining electrical resistance are presented for the silicone matrix formulation designated as GF-580.

Performance comparisons on spatial lattice algorithm and direct matrix inverse method with application to adaptive arrays processing

Lattice algorithm has been employed in numerous adaptive filtering applications such as speech analysis/synthesis, noise canceling, spectral analysis, and channel equalization. In this paper the application to adaptive-array processing is discussed. The advantages are fast convergence rate as well as computational accuracy independent of the noise and interference conditions. The results produced by this technique are compared to those obtained by the direct matrix inverse method.

A micromechanics analysis of the influence of the interface on the performance of polymer-matrix composites

A specially developed two-dimensional finite element micromechanics analysis was used to predict the transverse tensile response of three different carbon fiber-reinforced, polymer matrix unidirectional composites. Experimental data were available for four different fiber sizings. The composites were tested both dry and moisture-conditioned, at room and elevated temperatures. Analytical/experimental correlations are presented and discussed.

Matrix resin effects in composite delamination - Mode I fracture aspects

A number of thermoset, toughened thermoset, and thermoplastic resin matrix systems were characterized for Mode I critical strain energy release rates, and their composites were tested for interlaminar critical strain energy release rates using the double cantilever beam method. A clear correlation is found between the two sets of data. With brittle resins, the interlaminar critical strain energy release rates are somewhat larger than the neat resin values due to a full transfer of the neat resin toughness to the composite and toughening mechanisms associated with crack growth. With tougher matrices, the higher critical strain energy release rates are only partially transferred to the composites, presumably because the fibers restrict the crack-tip deformation zones.

Influence of electron radiation and temperature on the cyclic, matrix dominated response of graphite-epoxy

The effects of electron radiation and elevated temperature on the matrix-dominated cyclic response of standard T300/934 and a chemically modified T300/934 graphite-epoxy are characterized. Both materials were subjected to 1.0 x 10 to the 10th rads of 1.0 MeV electron irradiation, under vacuum, to simulate 30 years in geosynchronous orbit. Cyclic tests were performed at room temperature and elevated temperature (121 C) on 4-ply unidirectional laminates to characterize the effects associated with irradiation and elevated temperature. Both materials exhibited energy dissipation in their response at elevated temperature. The irradiated modified material also exhibited energy dissipation at room temperature. The combination of elevated temperature and irradiation resulted in the most severe effects in the form of lower proportional limits, and greater energy dissipation. Dynamic-mechanical analysis demonstrated that the glass transition temperature, T(g), of the standard material was lowered 39 C by irradiation, wereas the T(g) of the modified material was lowered 28 C by irradiation. Thermomechanical analysis showed the occurrence of volatile products generated upon heating of the irradiated materials.

Addressable Inverter Matrix Tests Integrated-Circuit Wafer

Addressing elements indirectly through shift register reduces number of test probes. With aid of new technique, complex test structure on silicon wafer tested with relatively small number of test probes. Conserves silicon area by reduction of area devoted to pads. Allows thorough evaluation of test structure characteristics and of manufacturing process parameters. Test structure consists of shift register and matrix of inverter/transmission-gate cells connected to two-by-ten array of probe pads. Entire pattern contained in square area having only 1.6-millimeter sides. Shift register is conventional static CMOS device using inverters and transmission gates in master/slave D flip-flop configuration.

Finite-element grid improvement by minimization of stiffness matrix trace

A new and simple method of finite-element grid improvement is presented. The objective is to improve the accuracy of the analysis. The procedure is based on a minimization of the trace of the stiffness matrix. For a broad class of problems this minimization is seen to be equivalent to minimizing the potential energy. The method is illustrated with the classical tapered bar problem examined earlier by Prager and Masur. Identical results are obtained.

An efficient sparse matrix multiplication scheme for the CYBER 205 computer

This paper describes the development of an efficient algorithm for computing the product of a matrix and vector on a CYBER 205 vector computer. The desire to provide software which allows the user to choose between the often conflicting goals of minimizing central processing unit (CPU) time or storage requirements has led to a diagonal-based algorithm in which one of four types of storage is selected for each diagonal. The candidate storage types employed were chosen to be efficient on the CYBER 205 for diagonals which have nonzero structure which is dense, moderately sparse, very sparse and short, or very sparse and long; however, for many densities, no diagonal type is most efficient with respect to both resource requirements, and a trade-off must be made. For each diagonal, an initialization subroutine estimates the CPU time and storage required for each storage type based on results from previously performed numerical experimentation. These requirements are adjusted by weights provided by the user which reflect the relative importance the user places on the two resources. The adjusted resource requirements are then compared to select the most efficient storage and computational scheme.

Fracture criteria for discontinuously reinforced metal matrix composites

The effect of sample configuration on the details of initial crack propagation in discontinuously whisker reinforced aluminum metal matrix composites was investigated. Care was taken to allow direct comparison of fracture toughness values utilizing differing sample configurations and orientations, holding all materials variables constant, e.g., extrusion ration, heat treatment, and chemistry.

Unified constitutive model development for metal matrix composites at high temperature

Structural alloys used in high temperature applications exhibit complex thermomechanical behavior that is time dependent and hereditary. Recent attention is being focused on metal matrix composite materials for high temperature applications where they exhibit all the complexities of conventional alloys and their strong anisotropy adds further complexities. Here, a proven constitutive model for isotropic materials in which the inelastic strain rate and internal state are expressible as gradients of a dissipation potential is taken to depend on invariants that reflect local transverse isotropy. Applications illustrate the capability of the theory of representing the time dependent, hereditary, anisotropic behavior typical of these materials at high temperature.

Fracture resistance of a TiB2 particle/SiC matrix composite at elevated temperature

The fracture resistance of a commercial TiB 2 particle/SiC matrix composite was evaluated at temperatures ranging from 20 to 1400 °C. A laser interferometric strain gauge (LISG) was used to continuously monitor the crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) of the chevron-notched and straight-notched, three-point bend specimens used. Crack growth resistance curves (R-curves) were determined from the load versus displacement curves and displacement calibrations. Fracture toughness, work-of-fracture, and R-curve levels were found to decrease with increasing temperature. Microstructure, fracture surface, and oxidation coat were examined to explain the fracture behavior.

A test for interfacial effects and stress transfer in ceramic matrix composites

The efforts to fabricate single embedded filament specimens of carbon and SiC fibers were unsuccessful largely due to the thermal stresses resulting from differences in thermal coefficient of expansion. Other factors appear to have been involved including embrittlement of the metal substrate by the H2 gas in the chemical vapor deposition flow stream and reaction layers formed between the silicon carbide and the metal substrate. The carbon fiber may have been attacked by the CVD reactant. It is concluded that these differential stresses are so large as to make the embedded fiber test impractical for the study of interphase effects and stress transfer in fiber ceramic matrix systems.

Immunofluorescence localization of dissociation supernatant and extracellular matrix components in Lytechinus pictus sectioned embryos

Indirect immunofluorescence was used to localize specific extracellular components in embryos of the sea urchin Lytechinus pictus. Hyalin and S2 (a group of components found in the disaggregation supernatant from Strongylocentrotus purpuratus blastulae) were uniformly present at all stages (unfertilized up to 32 hr) except hyalin could not be detected at the 12 hour early blastula stage. Laminin was found in 16 cell, 32 cell, 6 hour, 18 hour, 24 hour, and 32 hour stages, with especially bright fluorescence at 18 hours. Collagen I was present at all stages (freshly fertilized up to 32 hour) except little was detected at 12 hours. Fibronectin was uniformly present in blastocoelar fibers stained with anto-collagen I and anti-fibronectin. These results were compared with those for S. purpuratus to produce an overview of the localization of specific extracellular matrix components during development of two species of sea urchins. The results set the stage for future studies that will examine the function of these components at the various developmental stages.

Metal matrix composites - Their time to shine?

Basic types of metal matrix composite (MMC) systems (namely, the particulates-, the whisker/flakes-, and the continuous-fiber-reinforced) are discussed together with the advantages and the disadvantages of each system. Special consideration is given to the new MMC systems under development that meet the needs of aerospace applications and to the properties of stiffness and thermal expansion of these systems. As a family of structural materials, MMCs have great potential for missile airframe applications.

A sparse matrix algorithm on the Boolean vector machine

VLSI technology is being used to implement a prototype Boolean Vector Machine (BVM), which is a large network of very small processors with equally small memories that operate in SIMD mode; these use bit-serial arithmetic, and communicate via cube-connected cycles network. The BVM's bit-serial arithmetic and the small memories of individual processors are noted to compromise the system's effectiveness in large numerical problem applications. Attention is presently given to the implementation of a basic matrix-vector iteration algorithm for space matrices of the BVM, in order to generate over 1 billion useful floating-point operations/sec for this iteration algorithm. The algorithm is expressed in a novel language designated 'BVM'.

On the eigenvalue and eigenvector derivatives of a non-defective matrix

A novel approach is introduced to address the problem of existence of differentiable eigenvectors for a nondefective matrix which may have repeated eigenvalues. The existence of eigenvector derivatives for a unique set of continuous eigenvectors corresponding to a repeated eigenvalue is rigorously established for nondefective and analytic matrices. A numerically implementable method is then developed to compute the differentiable eigenvectors associated with repeated eigenvalues. The solutions of eigenvalue and eigenvector derivatives for repeated eigenvalues are then derived. An example is given to illustrate the validity of formulations developed in this paper.
