An evaluation of EREP (Skylab) and ERTS imagery for integrated natural resources survey

The author has identified the following significant results. An experimental procedure has been devised and is being tested for natural resource surveys to cope with the problems of interpreting and processing the large quantities of data provided by Skylab and ERTS. Some basic aspects of orbital imagery such as scale, the role of repetitive coverage, and types of sensors are being examined in relation to integrated surveys of natural resources and regional development planning. Extrapolation away from known ground conditions, a fundamental technique for mapping resources, becomes very effective when used on orbital imagery supported by field mapping. Meaningful boundary delimitations can be made on orbital images using various image enhancement techniques. To meet the needs of many developing countries, this investigation into the use of satellite imagery for integrated resource surveys involves the analysis of the images by means of standard visual photointerpretation methods.

Life sciences payload definition and integration study. Volume 2: Requirements, design, and planning studies for the carry-on laboratories

The task phase concerned with the requirements, design, and planning studies for the carry-on laboratory (COL) began with a definition of biomedical research areas and candidate research equipment, and then went on to develop conceptual layouts for COL which were each evaluated in order to arrive at a final conceptual design. Each step in this design/evaluation process concerned itself with man/systems integration research and hardware, and life support and protective systems research and equipment selection. COL integration studies were also conducted and include attention to electrical power and data management requirements, operational considerations, and shuttle/Spacelab interface specifications. A COL program schedule was compiled, and a cost analysis was finalized which takes into account work breakdown, annual funding, and cost reduction guidelines.

Integral equation for small perturbations of irrotational flows

An investigation is conducted concerning the validity of analytical methods which are based on deriving an integral equation, taking into account small perturbations in the case of a nonuniform but irrotational flow. The results obtained apply to a wide Mach number range, but are restricted to small amplitude motions and to nonviscous flows. It is shown that the integral equation relating the unknown velocity potential to the known normal flow velocity can be derived from the appropriate Green's identity.

Changing stepsize in the integration of differential equations using modified divided differences

Multistep methods for solving differential equations based on numerical integration formulas or numerical differentiation formulas (for stiff equations) require special provision for changing the stepsize. New algorithms are given which make the use of modified divided differences an attractive way to carry out the change in stepsize for such methods. Error estimation and some of the important factors in stepsize selection and the selection of integration order are also considered.

Comparison of numerical integration techniques for orbital applications

The present work gives a brief comparison of the performance of programs for integrating differential equations for orbital applications. The evaluation criteria and the method of testing are described, and the results of the test problem set are included. Integration methods that were chosen for comparison include high-order Runge-Kutta methods; a rational extrapolation method (Bulirsch and Stoer, 1966); a variable step, variable order, multistep method (Krogh, 1969); classical multistep methods of Adams and Cowell; and modified multistep methods. The high-order Runge-Kutta methods used in the comparison include RKF 7(8) and RKF 8(9) (Fehlberg, 1968), and RKS 8-10 (Shanks, 1966).

Cost-effectiveness of integrated analysis/design systems /IPAD/ An executive summary. II

Evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of integrated analysis/design systems with particular attention to Integrated Program for Aerospace-Vehicle Design (IPAD) project. An analysis of all the ingredients of IPAD indicates the feasibility of a significant cost and flowtime reduction in the product design process involved. It is also concluded that an IPAD-supported design process will provide a framework for configuration control, whereby the engineering costs for design, analysis and testing can be controlled during the air vehicle development cycle.

A procedure for verifying the structural integrity of an existing pressurized wind tunnel

The present work describes the approach employed in verifying the structural integrity at maximum operating pressure of a low turbulence pressurized wind tunnel built in 1939-1940. The approach utilized existing ASME Code guidelines and fracture mechanics techniques in combination with the latest nondestructive examination methods to validate the desired life of the facility while minimizing reconstruction or major modifications. Detailed stress analyses using a finite element computer program and a numerical integration program were performed on critical areas of the tunnel. Critical vessel areas were evaluated for remaining fatigue life. Fracture mechanics analyses of the shell were performed at various regions, and critical flaw sizes at each location were determined. Analysis of the test data permitted the remaining useful life of the tunnel to be estimated at 8 to 10 years.

The nu sub 9 fundamental of ethane - Integrated intensity and band absorption measurements with application to the atmospheres of the major planets

Measurements of the absolute intensity and integrated band absorption have been performed for the nu sub 9 fundamental band of ethane. The intensity is found to be about 34 per sq cm per atm at STP, and this is significantly higher than previous estimates. It is shown that a Gaussian profile provides an empirical representation of the apparent spectral absorption coefficient. Employing this empirical profile, a simple expression is derived for the integrated band absorption, which is in excellent agreement with experimental values. The band model is then employed to investigate the possible role of ethane as a source of thermal infrared opacity within the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn, and to interpret qualitatively observed brightness temperatures for Saturn.

Integrated thruster assembly program

The program is reported which has provided technology for a long life, high performing, integrated ACPS thruster assembly suitable for use in 100 typical flights of a space shuttle vehicle over a ten year period. The four integrated thruster assemblies (ITA) fabricated consisted of: propellant injector; a capacitive discharge, air gap torch type igniter assembly; fast response igniter and main propellant valves; and a combined regen-dump film cooled chamber. These flightweight 6672 N (1500 lb) thruster assemblies employed GH2/GO2 as propellants at a chamber pressure of 207 N/sq cm (300 psia). Test data were obtained on thrusted performance, thermal and hydraulic characteristics, dynamic response in pulsing, and cycle life. One thruster was fired in excess of 42,000 times.
