Using colloidal silica as a zonal isolation material and fast path blocker in geological formations

A system for blocking fast flow paths in geological formations includes preparing a solution of colloidal silica having a nonviscous phase and a solid gel phase. The solution of colloidal silica is injected into the geological formations while the solution of colloidal silica is in the nonviscous phase. The solution of colloidal silica is directed into the fast flow paths and reaches the solid gel phase in the fast flow paths thereby blocking flow of fluid in the fast paths.

Using predictions of outcomes of cache memory access requests for controlling whether a request generator sends memory access requests to a memory in parallel with cache memory access requests

An electronic device handles memory access requests for data in a memory. The electronic device includes a memory controller for the memory, a last-level cache memory, a request generator, and a predictor. The predictor determines a likelihood that a cache memory access request for data at a given address will hit in the last-level cache memory. Based on the likelihood, the predictor determines: whether a memory access request is to be sent by the request generator to the memory controller for the data in parallel with the cache memory access request being resolved in the last-level cache memory, and, when the memory access request is to be sent, a type of memory access request that is to be sent. When the memory access request is to be sent, the predictor causes the request generator to send a memory request of the type to the memory controller.

Are You Resilient? Site Energy and Water Resilience Indicators

There is growing interest among operators of individual or co-located facilities to plan for utility disruptions caused by natural hazards and threats. Energy and water resilience at the site level can be characterized as the ability to withstand, adapt, and recover from an energy and/or water supply disruption. But how can a site’s energy and water resilience posture be measured? An evaluation framework with clear performance measures or indicators can help organizations establish what it means to be energy and water resilient and assess progress towards meeting resilience goals across sites and over time. Tracking a consistent set of indicators can help organizations identify problem areas that should be addressed and ascertain if energy and water resilience has improved as a result of investments or operational or policy changes. Resilience indicators also provide a means for organizations with geographically distributed sites to identify common problem areas that may require higher-level attention. This paper outlines an approach that organizations can use to measure site energy and water resilience. This approach was developed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program as part of an effort to help federal agencies plan for energy and water resilience in a more systematic and rigorous way. The paper defines a general structure for defining energy and water resilience indicators, and provides example indicators and potential rating methods.

Biomass to Biochar: Maximizing the Carbon Value - Executive Summary

Converting biomass to biochar presents exciting opportunities to mitigate climate change, improve forest and soil health, decrease wildfire risk, bolster ecosystem services, and revitalize rural economies. Our expert panel examined how biomass is harvested, converted to biochar and applied and where operational changes and funding could significantly magnify biochar's contributions. To advance knowledge and efficacies, we found that a rigorous combination of coordinated long-term research, market research and development and enhancement of business support infrastructure that leads to collaborative policy development is essential. We also identified how barriers to five specific biochar technology sectors could be overcome and provide guidelines for effective funding.
