Development of new structural materials that can withstand the extreme environments of nuclear reactors where the materials are exposed to high dose rate of ~ 30 200 dpa, high temperatures of the order of 500 1000 o C and tens of years of operation is vital for exploiting the “smallest carbon footprint energy source” to its fullest, in order to deal with the energy crisis worldwide. Recently, HEAs have shown superior irradiation properties over conventional alloys like higher resistance to defect formation, lower void swelling, limited irradiation hardening and higher microstructural stability under irradiation, making them potential structural material candidates for reactors. Proper characterization and testing of these materials are essential before they can replace the conventional alloys.

In recent literature, it has been argued that a mild form of the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) is satisfied by wide classes of effective field theories in which higher-derivative corrections can be shown to shift the charge-to-mass ratios of extremal black holes to larger values. However, this mild form does not directly constrain low-energy physics because the black holes satisfying the WGC have masses above the cutoff of the effective theory. In this note, we point out that in string theory modular invariance can connect a light superextremal state to heavy superextremal states; the latter collapse into black holes at small string coupling. In the context of heterotic string theory, we show that these states are black holes that have α'-exact charge-to-mass ratios exceeding the classical extremality bound. This suggests that modular invariance of the string partition function can be used to relate the existence of a light superextremal particle to the positive shift in charge-to-mass ratio of extremal black holes.
We consider rigorous consequences of modular invariance for two-dimensional unitary non-rational CFTs with c > 1. Simple estimates for the torus partition function can lead to remarkably strong results. We show in particular that the spectral density of spin-J operators must grow like exp (π√$\frac{2}{3}$$(c - 1)$J})/√2J in any twist interval at or above (c - 1)/12, with a known twist-dependent prefactor. This proves that the large J spectrum becomes dense even without averaging over spins. For twists below (c - 1)/12 we establish that the growth must be strictly slower. Finally, we estimate how fast the maximal gap between two spin-J operators must go to zero as J becomes large.
