RTC: a distributed realtime control system toolkit

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has built several optical interferometers using a common software framework developed for this purpose. The heart of this framework is the Realtime Control (RTC) software product. RTC has evolved from its initial implementation to include a powerful dynamic configuration capability and to use Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) technology for commanding and telemetry. This paper describes the current implementation of this toolkit.

A performance analysis method for distributed real-time robotic systems: A case study of remote teleoperation

Robot coordination and control systems for remote teleoperation applications are by necessity implemented on distributed computers. Modeling and performance analysis of these distributed robotic systems is difficult, but important for economic system design. Performance analysis methods originally developed for conventional distributed computer systems are often unsatisfactory for evaluating real-time systems. The paper introduces a formal model of distributed robotic control systems; and a performance analysis method, based on scheduling theory, which can handle concurrent hard-real-time response specifications. Use of the method is illustrated by a case of remote teleoperation which assesses the effect of communication delays and the allocation of robot control functions on control system hardware requirements.

Tools for monitoring and controlling distributed applications

The Meta system is a UNIX-based toolkit that assists in the construction of reliable reactive systems, such as distributed monitoring and debugging systems, tool integration systems and reliable distributed applications. Meta provides mechanisms for instrumenting a distributed application and the environment in which it executes, and Meta supplies a service that can be used to monitor and control such an instrumented application. The Meta toolkit is built on top of the ISIS toolkit; they can be used together in order to build fault-tolerant and adaptive, distributed applications.

Heterogeneous distributed query processing: The DAVID system

The objective of the Distributed Access View Integrated Database (DAVID) project is the development of an easy to use computer system with which NASA scientists, engineers and administrators can uniformly access distributed heterogeneous databases. Basically, DAVID will be a database management system that sits alongside already existing database and file management systems. Its function is to enable users to access the data in other languages and file systems without having to learn the data manipulation languages. Given here is an outline of a talk on the DAVID project and several charts.

Powder compaction in systems of bimodal distribution

The compaction of mixtures involving different particle sizes is discussed. The various stages of the compaction process include the rearrangement of particles, the filling of the interstices of the large particles by the smaller ones, and the change in particle size and shape upon further densification through the application of pressure. Experimental approaches and equipment used for compacting material are discussed together with the theoretical relations of the compacting process.

Multilayer insulative systems

One dimensional numerical analysis of transient thermal response multilayer insulative system determines temperature distribution through system consisting of one to four layers. Program based on this analysis will determine thickness of specified layer that will satisfy specified temperature-limit criterion at any point in insulative system.

Software techniques for a distributed real-time processing system

The paper describes software techniques developed for the Unified Data System (UDS), a distributed processor network for control and data handling onboard a planetary spacecraft. These techniques include a structured language for specifying the programs contained in each module, and a small executive program in each module which performs scheduling and implements the module task.

Largo hot water system long range thermal performance test report, addendum

The test procedure used and the test results obtained during the long range thermal performance tests of the LARGO Solar Hot Water System under natural environmental conditions are presented. Objectives of these tests were to determine the amount of energy collected, the amount of power required for system operation, system efficiency, temperature distribution, and system performance degradation.

Optimal control and controller location for distributed parameter elastic systems

A class of systems governed by second order partial differential equations and driven by controllers located at points r sub i, i = 1, ..., k, is considered. A cost functional quadratic in the time derivative of the state and the control is associated with the system. The optimal controller locations are defined as the ones which minimize the maximum of the cost over all possible initial states. An analytical solution to the associated Riccati equation is presented providing a convenient expression for determining the optimal locations.

Mean winds of the upper middle atmosphere (60-110 km): A global distribution from radar systems (M.F., METEOR, VHF)

Since the development of the last CIRA in 1972, the number of radars providing winds in the upper middle atmosphere has increased significantly. These systems fill the data gap between 60 km and 110 km. The radars include medium frequency (MF) radars or partial reflection systems giving data from 60/70 to 100/110 km; meteor radars, 80 to 110 km, and M.S.T. radars operating as meteor radars. Data from 12 locations are shown, which represent a good Northern Hemispheric (NH) North American chain, an Oceanian chain which is mainly in the Southern Hemisphere (SH), and some Western Europe data. Generally tidal oscillations have been removed from days or groups of days, and the remaining mean winds and longer period oscillations plotted as height-time contours. Composite cross sections from the years 1978 to 1982 were formed where possible so that only the major temporal features remain.

A distributed array antenna system

The Space Station communication system will use microwave frequency radio links to carry digitized information from sender to receiver. The ability of the antenna system to meet stringent requirements on coverage zones, multiple users, and reliability will play an important part in the overall multiple access communication system. This paper will describe the configuration of a multibeam conformal phased array antenna and the individual microwave integrated components incoporated into this antenna system.

A distributed data acquisition system for aeronautics test facilities

The NASA Lewis Research Center is in the process of installing a new data acquisition and display system. This new system will provide small and medium sized aeronautics test facilities with a state-of-the-art real-time data acquisition and display system. The new data system will provide for the acquisition of signals from a variety of instrumentation sources. They include analog measurements of temperatures, pressures, and other steady state voltage inputs; frequency inputs to measure speed and flow; discrete I/O for significant events, and modular instrument systems such as multiplexed pressure modules or electronic instrumentation with a IEEE 488 interface. The data system is designed to acquire data, convert it to engineering units, compute test dependent performance calculations, limit check selected channels or calculations, and display the information in alphanumeric or graphical form with a cycle time of one second for the alphanumeric data. This paper describes the system configuration, its salient features, and the expected impact on testing.

Modeling substorm current systems using conductivity distributions inferred from DE auroral images

The first attempt to systematically use DE 1 auroral images to infer ionospheric conductivities is presented. These conductivities are then used to compute the distributions of ionospheric and field-aligned current patterns during auroral substorms. It is concluded that the western electrojet is, in general, collocated with the region of high auroral luminosity, while the region of relatively low luminosity in the evening sector is collocated with the eastward electrojet. The upward field-aligned currents exist in the brightest auroral region on the poleward side of the evening auroral oval and on the equatorward side of the morning oval. A significant amount of ionospheric currents can flow in regions where there are no bright auroral emissions.

Methodology requirements for intelligent systems architecture

The methodology required for the development of the 'intelligent system architecture' of distributed computer systems which integrate standard data processing capabilities with symbolic processing to provide powerful and highly autonomous adaptive processing capabilities must encompass three elements: (1) a design knowledge capture system, (2) computer-aided engineering, and (3) verification and validation metrics and tests. Emphasis must be put on the earliest possible definition of system requirements and the realistic definition of allowable system uncertainties. Methodologies must also address human factor issues.
