Global Aspects of the Exploration of Space

The interest of man in outer space began long ago among uncivilized peoples to whom the face of the sky was clock and almanac; the celestial bodies, objects of worship. Exploration was at first by visual observation, later aided by armillary spheres and quadrants, and still later by more precise measuring instruments, telescopes, and spectroscopes. The information obtained was that borne by the light that was transmitted from the distant celestial object through the atmosphere to the observing instrument on the ground. In recent years the light waves have been supplemented by radio waves as carriers of information from the stars and planets. Men of many nations have contributed through the centuries to the exploration of space by the methods of astronomy. The history of advances in astronomical knowledge and technique includes the records of Chinese, Babylonians, Greeks, Arabians, and of nearly every nation of the modern world. International cooperation was early recognized as essential and beneficial; the countless number of the stars and the vastness of space present mankind with a truly global task. The picture of the universe obtained by the astronomers early stirred the imagination of men to speculate about the existence of life elsewhere in the universe, about means of communication with distant stars, and in the last centuries about the possibility of the travel of man to the moon and planets. Some sought to apply the science and engineering of their day to describe the vehicles to be used. For example, Jules Verne published in 1865 in "From the Earth to the Moon" a description of a gun-launched projectile carrying passengers to orbit the moon. Today we have taken the first steps to bring this inspired vision to reality. The exploration of space by unmanned vehicles carrying scientific apparatus began on October 4, 1957; exploration by man will follow in due course.

Dryden, Hugh L.↗

Simple BCD circuit accurately counts to 24

Ripple-through counter with divide-by-24 output pulse is used in digital control clocks to register hours and give a daily output signal. It uses commercially available digital modules that incorporate and/gates with flip-flops.

Spafford, M. L.↗

Electronic phase-locked-loop speed control system is stable

Phase locked-loop circuit is used for playback motors in digital tape recorders where the reproducer output remains in exact synchronism with an external reference clock over extended periods. It removes the motor dynamics from the control loop so that the loop is stable without damping.

Stone, F. A.↗

Bipolar current driver for memory circuits

Circuit which logically determines the state of a flip-flop and amplifies the current from a clock pulse provides a bipolar driving current to a memory circuit, the polarity of which is determined by the state of a flip-flop. This principle may be applied to various memory driving circuits where power dissipation must be minimized.

Chong, C. F.↗

Vibrator elapsed time is automatically controlled

Circuit determines elapsed operating time for vibrators when three vibrators are located in one room and are powered by two amplifiers through either of two control systems. It operates the control system elapsed time clocks only when voltage is applied to the vibrator armatures.

Burowick, E. A.↗

Multiplexer uses insulated gate-field effect transistors

Small lightweight multiplexer incorporates IG-FETs /Insulated Gate-Field Effect Transistors/ for all digital logic functions, including the internally generated 3.6-kHz clock. It consists of 30 primary channels, each of which is sampled 120 times per second.

Gussow, S. S.↗

Servo control and data synchronization study

Magnetic tape recorder-reproducer to accept data pulses at varying rates, record data at constant rate, and retrieve recorded data at rate synchronized to external clock

SYNCHRONIZATION↗

Attention and psychophysical time.

Intermittency hypothesis suggesting temporal integration of data processing of human central nervous system achieved through control of clock generating time points

CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM↗

Method of reducing time base error in digital magnetic recorders

Apparatus reduces Time Base Error /TBE/ in the playback of digital data from magnetic recording equipment. The apparatus uses a magnet which employs a servo position control of the tape by which the playback data clock is phase locked with a fixed frequency reference signal.
