Carbide Coated Carbon-Carbon Heat Exchange Tubes for Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Fuel Assembly

Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) systems are proposed for human Mars missions because of the potential for reduced round-trip transit time that decreases crew exposure to space environmental hazards. NTP enables abort scenarios not available with other systems and can also be used for expanded cis-lunar mobility and deep space exploration. Heat exchange tubes, within the nuclear fuel assembly, provide flow channels for gaseous hydrogen propellant to carry the heat released during the nuclear fission reaction out of the assembly. This paper summarizes the ongoing work at NASA Centers and contractors, led by NASA Langley Research Center to develop hermetic carbide coated carbon-carbon heat exchange tubes for the NTP fuel assembly; capable of operating at 2900 K in a high-pressure, flowing hydrogen environment.

Mark I Silicon Carbide Integrated Circuit Test Oven Assembly and Programming Guide

This report provides a parts list, with assembly and programming instructions for building firstgeneration (Mark I) compact test ovens; this oven design is customized for prolonged functional electrical testing of prototype silicon carbide (SiC) devices at temperatures up to 500 °C (932 °F). The general approach of using multiple compact ovens to perform long-term, high-temperature electronics testing efficiently is described in a conference paper (Izadnegahdar, Alain, et al.: Alternative Setup for LongDuration Low-Duty-Cycle 600 °C Ambient Testing of SiC Integrated Circuits. International Microelectronics Assembly and Packaging Society (iMAPS) HiTECH 2021 Technology Crossover Extravaganza, 2021), available at https://ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/20210011676. The new Mark I oven design described here offers several significant improvements over the compact oven described in that paper. For example, it is constructed from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and requires minimal assembly. Much of the work involves drilling holes in the two aluminum project boxes, which contain the control electronics and the oven itself. The cost of components is less than $200 (USD) per oven, which makes constructing multiple ovens affordable. In addition, the two-box design separates the high-temperature heater from the electronics, which keeps the electronics cool, prolonging the lifetime of these components.

Detecting pin diversion from pressurized water reactors spent fuel assemblies

Detecting diversion of spent fuel from Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) by determining possible diversion including the steps of providing a detector cluster containing gamma ray and neutron detectors, inserting the detector cluster containing the gamma ray and neutron detectors into the spent fuel assembly through the guide tube holes in the spent fuel assembly, measuring gamma ray and neutron radiation responses of the gamma ray and neutron detectors in the guide tube holes, processing the gamma ray and neutron radiation responses at the guide tube locations by normalizing them to the maximum value among each set of responses and taking the ratio of the gamma ray and neutron responses at the guide tube locations and normalizing the ratios to the maximum value among them and producing three signatures, gamma, neutron, and gamma-neutron ratio, based on these normalized values, and producing an output that consists of these signatures that can indicate possible diversion of the pins from the spent fuel assembly.

ASSESSMENT OF MULTIPHASE CFD WITH ZERO CLOSURE MODEL FOR BOILING WATER REACTOR FUEL ASSEMBLIES

Extension of existing boiling closures to the high void fraction conditions of BWRs is one of challenges for M-CFD applications. This paper presents the assessment of an Eulerian M-CFD model with Zero closure model that has been specifically designed for two-phase flow and heat transfer applications in BWR fuel assemblies. The baseline Zero closure aims at including the simplest and most robust representation of the key physical mechanisms, rather than aiming at absolute accuracy of the predictions. The capabilities of M-CFD with Zero were evaluated against the international OECD/NRC BFBT benchmark data through the comparative analyses of local void fraction, sub-channel void fraction error and exit quality. INL high performance computing system has been employed to demonstrate the scalability of the M-CFD application to nuclear reactor fuel assemblies. The M-CFD simulation results show a good agreement with the experimental data for both quantitative and qualitative results, with the highest uncertainty being observed in the prediction of the local void fraction profile at low void fraction condition. This paper presents a recent view of the best practices for M-CFD of BWR fuel assemblies to provide a useful reference to identify and overcome common challenges in the applications of M-CFD tools. We provide recommendations for geometric modeling, mesh generation and solver configurations to optimize the methodology application.

Detection of Missing Assemblies and Estimation of the Scattering Densities in a VSC-24 Dry Storage Cask with Cosmic-Ray-Muon-Based Computed Tomography

We report that highly energetic, cosmic-ray muons can penetrate a dry storage cask and yield information about the material inside it by making use of the physics of multiple Coulomb scattering. Work by others has shown this information may be used for verification of dry storage cask contents after continuity of knowledge has been lost. In our modeling and simulation approach, we use ideal planar radiation detectors to record the trajectories and momentum of both incident and exiting cosmic ray muons; this choice allows us to demonstrate the fundamental limit of the technology for a particular measurement and reconstruction method. In a method analogous to computed tomography with the attenuation coefficient replaced by scattering density, we apply a filtered back projection algorithm in order to reconstruct the geometry in modeled scenarios for a VSC-24 concrete-walled cask. We also report on our attempt to estimate material-specific information. A scenario where one of the middle four spent nuclear fuel assemblies is missing—undetectable with a simple PoCA-based approach—is expected to be detectable with a CT-based approach. Moreover, a trickier scenario where one or more assemblies is replaced by a dummy assembly is put forward. Lastly, in this case, we expect that this dry storage cask should be found to be not as declared based on our simulation and reconstruction results.

Atomic layer chemical patterns for block copolymer assembly

Provided herein are methods of directed self-assembly (DSA) on atomic layer chemical patterns and related compositions. The atomic layer chemical patterns may be formed from two-dimensional materials such as graphene. The atomic layer chemical patterns provide high resolution, low defect directed self-assembly. For example, DSA on a graphene pattern can be used achieve ten times the resolution of DSA that is achievable on a three-dimensional pattern such as a polymer brush. Assembly of block copolymers on the atomic layer chemical patterns may also facilitate subsequent etch, as the atomic layer chemical patterns are easier to etch than conventional pattern materials.
