Dynamic Role-Based Access Control Policy for Smart Grid Applications: An Offline Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

Role-based access control (RBAC) is adopted in the information and communication technology domain for authentication purposes. However, due to a very large number of entities within organizational access control (AC) systems, static RBAC management can be inefficient, costly, and can lead to cybersecurity threats. In this paper, a novel hybrid RBAC model is proposed, based on the principles of offline deep reinforcement learning (RL) and Bayesian belief networks. The considered framework utilizes a fully offline RL agent, which models the behavioral history of users as a Bayesian belief-based trust indicator. Thus, the initial static RBAC policy is improved in a dynamic manner through off-policy learning while guaranteeing compliance of the internal users with the security rules of the system. By deploying our implementation within the smart grid domain and specifically within a Distributed Energy Resources (DER) ecosystem, we provide an end-to-end proof of concept of our model. Finally, detailed analysis and evaluation regarding the offline training phase of the RL agent are provided, while the online deployment of the hybrid RL-based RBAC model into the DER ecosystem highlights its key operation features and salient benefits over traditional RBAC models.

Remote Monitoring and Diagnostics of Pitch-Bearing Defects in an MW-Scale Wind Turbine Using Pitch Symmetrical-Component Analysis

Recently, multiple wind turbine failure databases have reviewed that the pitch system is one of the subassemblies with the highest failure rates and largest contributors to the overall downtime. Therefore, there has been an increasing interest to provide remote health monitoring for wind turbine pitch system. While most of the research articles are discussing pitch actuation system (hydraulic or electric actuator) faults only, there is very limited research on pitch-bearing-defect detection. This article provides a remote and hardware-free solution to monitor multiaxis pitch-bearing health condition called pitch symmetrical-component analysis. It leverages readily available low-resolution (100 Hz) electrical measurements, mechanical measurements, and control signals from the existing pitch control platform, and innovatively applies symmetrical-component analysis in multiphase ac system to multiaxis pitch control system and introduces multiaxis pitch-bearing degradation trending curves. This hardware-free solution can be directly applied to the existing wind turbines and successfully give the wind farm operator an early warning before multiaxis pitch bearing fails. It has been proved to be accurate, low cost, and has minimum impacts on turbine normal operation, and has been validated by field data from several North America MW-scale wind farms. This approach turns out to be the first hardware-free (no additional hardware needed) method to remotely monitor and diagnose multiaxis wind turbine pitch-bearing condition.

Operation of Dual-T-Type Modular Multilevel Converter for Uninterrupted Power Supply Under Bridge Failures

Dual-T-type modular multilevel converter (DTMMC) is an alternative to the existing uninterrupted power supply (UPS) due to its advantage in flexible leg reusing, multiple power ports, and high operating efficiency. Here, in this article, a DTMMC-UPS, which has series configurations on both input/output ac sides, obtains high-voltage grid/load accessing interfaces is presented. In the described system, the fact that copies of T-type legs are employed makes semiconductor failure common to happen. Moreover, both the coupling between rectifier and inverter conversions and the confliction between intercell and inner-cell voltage balancing make fault-tolerant control a tough issue. In this article, the switch fault types are first clarified and diagnosed by the different impacts on normal operation. An improved voltage vector modulation is then deduced to facilitate the planning of proper primary switching patterns, to achieve rectifier side normal operation. The secondary alternated level-shifted pulsed-width modulation (LS-PWM) is also modified to achieve inverter side normal operation. The experiment results are supplied to verify the validity of the modulation-coordinated fault toleration strategy.

Hybrid Data-Driven Based HVdc Ancillary Control for Multiple Frequency Data Attacks

The high voltage direct current (HVdc) intertie has been applied to provide ancillary-services for ac grids, utilizing the real-time feedback from phasor measurement units (PMUs). However, PMU data communication is vulnerable to false data injection attacks (FDIA) due to protocol defects, thus the HVdc ancillary control and system stability will be threatened. To address this issue, this article proposes a novel HVdc control strategy based on a hybrid data-driven (HDD) methodology. In this work, the HDD methodology is first proposed to detect the types and duration time of multiple frequency attacks. Specifically, the Hilbert Huang transform (HHT) is used to decompose the frequency data, using variational mode decomposition instead of the traditional empirical mode decomposition, to extract data features. Second, a multikernel support vector machine is proposed to classify the attacked data based on the designed distinctive features from HHT. Meanwhile, the attacking duration time is decided using an unsupervised technique. Third, an HDD-based HVdc ancillary control strategy is established to eliminate the effect of FDIAs on the HVdc frequency response. Comprehensive experiments of HDD-based HVdc ancillary controls under different FDIAs suggest that the proposed HDD could fast and accurately classify the FDIAs, and the HDD-based HVdc ancillary control strategy could significantly suppress the impact of the FDIAs.

Magnetostrictive Ultrasonic Waveguide Transducer for In-Pile Thermometry

Real-time and reliable temperature measurement on nuclear fuels is crucial for the safe operation of existing pressurized-water reactors and future advanced nuclear reactors. Magnetostrictive materials deform when subjected to a magnetic field or exhibit magnetization variation when stressed. Here, based on these properties, this study prototyped an ultrasonic thermometer (UT) consisting of a magnetostrictive waveguide, a dc coil providing appropriate magnetic biasing, and an ac coil generating an acoustic impulse and detecting the resulting acoustic echoes. By tracking the time of flight between the excitation pulse and the echoes, the UT can potentially detect nuclear fuel cladding temperature from a long distance. In this study, magnetostrictive iron–gallium alloys, or Galfenol, were selected as the waveguide due to their large magnetostriction, superior temperature survivability, excellent radiation resilience, and high mechanical robustness. A multiphysics finite-element model considering electrical, magnetic, and mechanical dynamics in the magnetostrictive UT was then developed. The model exhibited an error of 0.24% in time-of-flight simulation and, therefore, enabled computer-aided design and guided signal processing. Between room temperature and 120 °C, the new Galfenol-based UT exhibits a linear sensitivity of 162.8×10 ₋6 °C ₋1 , which is 51.7% higher than a previous magnetostrictive UT based on iron–cobalt–vanadium alloys.

Detection and Diagnosis of Data Integrity Attacks in Solar Farms Based on Multilayer Long Short-Term Memory Network

Photovoltaic (PV) systems are becoming more vulnerable to cyber threats. In response to this emerging concern, developing cyber-secure power electronics converters has received increased attention from the IEEE Power Electronics Society that recently launched a cyber-physical-security initiative. Here this letter proposes a deep sequence learning based diagnosis solution for data integrity attacks on PV systems in smart grids, including dc–dc and dc–ac converters. The multilayer long short-term memory networks are used to leverage time-series electric waveform data from current and voltage sensors in PV systems. The proposed method has been evaluated in a PV smart grid benchmark model with extensive quantitative analysis. As a comparison, we have evaluated classic data-driven methods, including K-nearest neighbor, decision tree, support vector machine, artificial neural network, and convolutional neural network. Comparison results verify performances of the proposed method for detection and diagnosis of various data integrity attacks on PV systems.

Differential Power Processing for Ultra-Efficient Data Storage

Here this paper presents the hardware, software, and power codesign of an ultra-efficient data storage server with differential power processing (DPP). DPP can reduce the power conversion stress, improve the efficiency, and enhance the functionality of modular power electronics systems. The power inputs of a large number of hard disk drives (HDDs) were connected in series and supported by a multiport ac-coupled differential power processing (MAC-DPP) converter through a multiwinding transformer. Methods for controlling the multi-input multi-output power flow in the multiwinding transformer while avoiding core saturation were investigated. A ten-port MAC-DPP prototype with 700-W/in 3 power density was built to support a 450-W HDD storage system with ten series-stacked voltage domains. The prototype was tested on a 50-HDD server testbench, and the overall system loss is below 1 W (99.77% system efficiency). The server was able to maintain high-speed reading and writing operation of all 50 HDDs against the worst hot-swapping scenarios. A variety of hardware/software configurations and many cloud storage techniques were tested on the fully functioning server. Experimental results show that the energy efficiency of large-scale information systems (CPU/GPU clusters, memory banks, HDD arrays, etc.) can be greatly improved by software, hardware, and power codesign.

Planar Transformer With Asymmetric Integrated Leakage Inductance Using Horizontal Air Gap

This article presents a novel planar-based transformer winding and core structure with controllable leakage inductance generation for integrated magnetics applications. As a result of limitations in integrated magnetics from the literature, a new approach is proposed utilizing semi-interleaved windings and controllable leakage via a leakage flux core leg featuring a horizontal air gap. Here, the proposed transformer design is analyzed via detailed reluctance modeling to determine closed-form equations for the magnetizing and asymmetrically distributed leakage inductances. Next, a genetic-algorithm-based multiobjective design optimization problem is developed, seeking to minimize the core and winding losses of the proposed transformer subject to a set of parametric and geometric constraints in a dc-ac dual-active-bridge topology for microinverter applications. The optimization was extended to include other integrated magnetic structures from the literature, where it is determined that the proposed transformer is superior from the perspectives of efficiency, footprint area, and parasitic capacitance. Based on the results of the optimization analysis, two designs with theoretical transformer California Energy Commission (CEC) efficiency drops (i.e., CEC efficiency reduction specifically due to the transformer loss mechanisms) of 1.19% and 0.83% were fabricated and evaluated for electrical and thermal performance in the proposed 40 V, 400 W microinverter.

Comparison of CCM- and CRM-Based Boost Parallel Active Power Decoupler for PV Microinverter

Single-phase inverter or rectifier systems often make use of an active power decoupler (APD) to balance the mismatch between constant dc power and fluctuating ac power. This article deals with the comparison of continuous conduction mode (CCM) and critical conduction mode (CRM) operation-based design of a parallel boost-type APD for photovoltaic microinverter applications. From a design perspective, multiobjective analysis of efficiency, volume, and cost is explored within a decision space including planar inductors, gallium nitride based devices, film capacitors, switching frequency, and modulation (CCM vs. CRM). The theoretical study analyzes all possible design configurations within CCM and CRM and identifies Pareto-optimal designs, from which the selected CRM design can achieve reduced system volume and lower cost with the use of smaller inductor core, while operating with similar California Energy Commission efficiency drop as the selected CCM design. From a control perspective, a pulsewidth modulation based control strategy is proposed to implement closed-loop CRM modulation that does not rely on zero-crossing detection. Furthermore, closed-loop systems are designed for the optimal CCM and CRM realizations, and the final system characteristics are compared. Experimental results, obtained using two separate 40-V, 400-W hardware prototypes for CCM and CRM, are presented to verify the analyses.

Conditional Sixth-Harmonic Injection to Improve the Linear Modulation Range of Three-Phase Voltage-Source Converters

Overmodulation techniques are used to improve dc bus voltage utilization for three-phase voltage-source converters (VSCs), resulting in significant reduction in fundamental voltage gain. Conventional pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques for three-phase VSCs cannot enhance the linear range of dc bus utilization by more than 15.5%. Here, in this letter, a conditional sixth-harmonic injection technique is introduced, which can theoretically improve the linear modulation range by up to 19.2% for three-phase ac systems without additional hardware components. Experimental validation of the proposed scheme is presented, with its performance compared against the conventional third-harmonic PWM technique.

Testing of the ITER Central Solenoid Modules

The ITER Central Solenoid is under fabrication by the U.S. ITER organization and its subcontractors. U.S. ITER will supply seven modules to ITER IO, six of which will be assembled in a stack that forms the ITER Central Solenoid. The first modules that were built by GA at their facility, went into high voltage testing, including Paschen testing in the vacuum, and then they were tested at 4.5 K and up to 40 kA to demonstrate compliance of the coil with the ITER requirements. In this article, we present the Test Plan and results of the central solenoid (CS) module’s performance, especially at the full current. We measured critical temperatures in several pancakes, we measured ac losses, joint resistance, and hydraulic characteristics of the coils. We also measured displacements of the coil height and hoop strain of the CS module (CSM) to verify the structural mechanical characteristics of the coil along with the cooldown shrinkage of the coil. We studied the performance of the cowound quench detectors and confirmed their effectiveness in the suppression of inductive noise. This information is necessary for verification of the stack behavior of CS in ITER operation. The test results and preliminary analyses are presented, compared to expectations, and discussed.

DC-Saturated Continuously Variable Series Reactors (CVSRs) for Power Flow Control in Power Transmission Systems

This paper proposes a novel continuously variable series reactor (CVSR) based on a dc current controller (DCC) to manage power flow in transmission systems. There are three major contributions. First, the three-dimensional electromagnetic interaction has been comprehensively analyzed to extend the understanding beyond the conventional 2D relationship. Second, a high-fidelity reluctance model of the CVSR with an improved DCC model is proposed and implemented. To overcome the fundamental concern for the system modeling, the DCC has been modeled as an ideal current source in parallel with an output impedance. Additionally, the induced back-EMF can be precisely projected which provides critical design guidelines for the DCC. Third, inspired by the theoretical analysis and modeling, a reliable high power DCC converter is designed accordingly to interface with kV-level back-EMF and supply kA-level dc current for a 115 kV/1500 A CVSR. Experiments are conducted in a practical transmission demonstration system. When the ac current in the transmission system varies from zero to 1500 A, experimental results show that the proposed CVSR can continuously regulate the reactance from 1.6 Ω to 5 Ω, validating the effectiveness of the proposed system design and modeling methodology.

Transmission Expansion Planning Test System for AC/DC Hybrid Grid With High Variable Renewable Energy Penetration

Test systems are important tools and benchmark for power system research. Currently, there is a lack of standard test systems for modern transmission expansion planning (TEP) research, especially under high variable renewable energy (VRE) penetrations. This article describes a 38-bus test system named the HRP-38 system dedicated to TEP. “HRP” stands for high renewable penetration. The objective of establishing such a system is to provide a consistent platform for different TEP methods to be tested and compared. The test system considers high VRE penetration of more than 30% energy share, which will be an important feature in many power systems in the future. Both AC and DC candidate lines are given to provide sufficient transmission planning alternatives. The complexity of the test system is well balanced considering calculation tractability and the ability to test the performance of the TEP planning model. The network topology, generation mix and load characteristics are described in detail. Year-round time series of VRE (wind power and PV) output and load curves for each bus are provided to facilitate a detailed evaluation of the transmission grid configuration under high VRE penetration. Finally, four benchmark results with different optimization settings are provided for the HRP-38 system.

Ensemble Learning Based Convex Approximation of Three-Phase Power Flow

Though the convex optimization has been widely used in power systems, it still cannot guarantee to yield a tight (accurate) solution to some problems. To mitigate this issue, this paper proposes an ensemble learning based convex approximation for alternating current (AC) power flow equations that differs from the existing convex relaxations. The proposed approach is based on three-phase quadratic power flow equations in rectangular coordinates. To develop this data-driven convex approximation of power flows, the polynomial regression (PR) is first deployed as a basic learner to fit convex relationships between the independent and dependent variables. Then, ensemble learning algorithms such as gradient boosting (GB) and bagging are introduced to combine learners to boost model performance. Based on the learned convex approximation of power flow, optimal power flow (OPF) is formulated as a convex quadratic programming problem. The simulation results on IEEE standard cases of both balanced and unbalanced systems show that, in the context of solving OPF, the proposed data-driven convex approximation outperforms the conventional semi-definite programming (SDP) relaxation in both accuracy and computational efficiency, especially in the cases that the conventional SDP relaxation fails

VSC-HVDC Interties for Urban Power Grid Enhancement

Urban power grids are facing many operational and expansion challenges to meet further demand growth and increased reliability requirements. Advanced transmission technologies have been considered by the electric utilities to effectively increase the utilization of existing infrastructure and operational flexibility. The focus of this paper is on VSC-HVDC technologies for urban power grid enhancement and modernization. First, a potential technical scheme is proposed for converting an existing AC circuit to DC operation, which could boost the power transfer capability of the critical transmission corridor and increase network operational flexibility. Second, this paper proposes three operation modes for the VSC-HVDC interties in urban power grids corresponding to normal, emergency and island operating conditions, respectively. An integrated, adaptive emergency control strategy (AEC) is proposed that can enable adaptive power flow responses of the VSC-HVDC intertie under varying system operating conditions and critical contingencies. The flexibility and effectiveness of the proposed operational principles of urban VSC-HVDC intertie and the corresponding control strategies are verified in PSCAD/EMTDC using a realistic urban power grid in China.

Employing Interacting Qubits for Distributed Microgrid Control

To empower flexible and scalable operations, distributed control of multi-inverter microgrids, based on classical communication networks among distributed energy resources, has attracted considerable attention as it can guarantee synchronization and provide suitable remedies to the problem of improper power sharing. Notwithstanding this, resilience of the current schemes on classical communication makes microgrids vulnerable to cyber attacks. Inspired by recent revolutionary breakthroughs in quantum communication, in this paper, we devise a novel synchronization mechanism. We extend the synchronization framework utilized in distributed control algorithms to networks of quantum systems by generating pinning terms and coupling mechanism for the new synchronization rule via exploiting proper quantum jump operators and observables, and show that the quantum system will converge to a time-variant target state. Our devised quantum distributed controller (QDC) gives rise to a novel quantum communication scheme for distributed control of microgrids and enables microgrids to exploit the state-of-the-art quantum communication frameworks as communication infrastructure. Finally, test results on two representative AC and DC networked microgrids validate the efficacy and universality of the quantum distributed control.
