Updated Gadolinium Validation in SCALE 6.3.0 using ENDF/B-VIII.0 Data [Slides]

This presentation provides a brief recap of the ANS Summer meeting in 2018 with a discussion of the results. The presentation also provides an overview of new models and states that all new models have been checked but have not yet been added to the VALID library. It also states that the models were originally created as part of a master's thesis or summer internships. Additionally, all models have been rerun in SCALE 6.3.0 using CE ENDF/B-VIII.0 library. In conclusion, this project has facilitated a significant expansion of validation set containing gadolinium, including 13 cases previously in VALID plus 99 new cases. The completion of IPPE HST experiments confirm no clear trend as a function of concentration or spectrum. Solid absorber cases also show no clear trends and LANL HMT experiments have significant discrepancies in Gd alloy cases. While almost half of the total gadolinium-bearing cases from the ICSBEP Handbook are considered here, the presentation recognizes that there is more work to be done.

Facility to Alleviate Salt Technology Risks (FASTR): Commissioning Update

The Facility to Alleviate Salt Technology Risks (FASTR) is a versatile, high-temperature (>600°C) molten chloride salt test facility designed to enable a variety of testing to advance the Generation 3 (Gen 3) concentrated solar power (CSP) molten salt technology. FASTR includes a salt preparation system and a forced flow test loop with a suite of instrumentation. The FASTR loop is capable of operating at 725°C with flow rates of 3–7 kg/s, and it includes heated and cooled sections and swappable components to facilitate testing future vendor-supplied hardware. The salt preparation system supplies large batches of clean salt for use in the FASTR forced circulation loop. This report summarizes the shakedown and initial operation of the FASTR forced circulation loop through December 2022.

SESAME 2163: an updated tin equation of state

This writeup summarizes a new tin EOS, which we refer to as SESAME 2163. The new EOS is very similar to SESAME 2162, containing the β, γ, δ, and ϵ solid phases and the liquid phase. The main differences in 2163 compared to 2162 are: (1) the β-γ phase boundary has been moved slightly higher in pressure, to better agree with recent measurements by Hinton et. al (2020), (2) the γ-δ phase boundary has been moved to slightly lower pressures, (3) the δ-ϵ phase boundary has been adjusted at pressures above 200 GPa to exclude the possibility of melt from the ϵ phase, with δ existing at pressures exceeding roughly 800 GPa, and (4) the melt curve has been moved to lower temperatures based on measurements and recommendations by Briggs et. al. Importantly, we also point out thatthe windows used for multiphase constructionhave changed to the δ phase. We summarize changes in plots showing comparisons of 2162 and 2163 to the relevant experimental data.

User’s Manual for Seal_Flux: A Seal Barrier Reduced-Order Model (Update)

This report provides a brief description on the use of the Seal_Flux computer program developed as part of the effort to quantify the risk of geologic storage of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) under the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Risk Assessment Partnership (NRAP). The Seal_Flux code simulates the flow of CO 2 through a low permeability rock horizon or seal formation overlying the storage reservoir into which CO 2 is injected. A two-phase, relative permeability approach with Darcy’s law is used for one-dimensional (1D) flow computations of CO 2 through the horizon in the vertical direction. The code also allows the simulation of time-dependent processes that can influence such flow. However, as part of its design, Seal_Flux is what can be termed a “reduced-order model” (ROM) and is not intended as a full-functioning flow code. The theory and simulation in the code is streamlined and directed towards the implementation of Monte Carlo risk analyses of CO 2 transport or as termed in this context as “leakage.” While presented in this report as a stand-alone tool, the Seal_Flux code is intended to function in the future as one of several models as part of an integrated, systems-level model of CO 2 storage performance. Finally, the code is written in Python 3.10 to provide an open framework for further development by others and to assist in linking the code with other modules in an integrated assessment model.

An Updated Review of the Solar PV Installation Workforce Literature

In order to develop a well-trained, equitable, and inclusive workforce with high quality jobs, the DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) identified a need for analytical context around different PV project characteristics and labor aspects, and how they might impact workforce wellbeing and PV industry growth. To determine the most valuable novel analytical contributions, this work reviews existing literature on solar workforce topics to identify what areas have been studied previously and where gaps remain. Focus areas included the following topics: (1) metrics for solar workforce, deployment, costs, and associated studies capturing aspects such as demographics and regional distribution, (2) solar workforce wellbeing, including employee contracting mechanisms, compensation, occupational safety and health, and community impacts, (3) national and state policies most relevant to the U.S. solar workforce, and (4) ongoing efforts to expand solar workforce participation, including local staffing dynamics, challenges, and relevant strategies.

Cost Projections for Utility-Scale Battery Storage: 2023 Update

In this work we describe the development of cost and performance projections for utility-scale lithium-ion battery systems, with a focus on 4-hour duration systems. The projections are developed from an analysis of recent publications that include utility-scale storage costs. The suite of publications demonstrates wide variation in projected cost reductions for battery storage over time. We use the recent publications to create low, mid, and high cost projections. Projected storage costs are $245/kWh, $326/kWh, and $403/kWh in 2030 and $159/kWh, $226/kWh, and $348/kWh in 2050. Battery variable operations and maintenance costs, lifetimes, and efficiencies are also discussed, with recommended values selected based on the publications surveyed.

PIPII cryoplant non thermal cycling updates

The Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) is a crucial upgrade to the Fermilab accelerator complex, featuring a new 800-MeV Superconducting Radio-Frequency (SRF) linear accelerator (LINAC) with 23 cryomodules operating at 2K. The LINAC thermohydraulic conditions are satisfied by the cryogenic subsystems: Cryogenic Distribution System (CDS), a helium refrigerator cold box (CB), a warm compression station (WCS) and a helium recovery system (RSYS). The accelerator has a strict requirement of non-thermal cycling of the LINAC cryomodules during planned and unplanned subsystem outages. This paper presents an integrated operating modes analysis of the of the LINAC/CDS thermohydraulic loads satisfied by the CB/WCS cooling system supported by the RSYS inventory management system. The study is based on latest cryoplant and CDS engineering deliverables, as well as the recent performance data from single cryomodule qualification tests performed at the Fermilab PIP-II Injector Test test s tand. The study evaluates both normal and abnormal operating modes, with a focus on identifying integrated scenarios that put subsystems components under stress. The conclusions of this study will help build redundancy to reduce the risk of thermal cycles during planned and unplanned subsystem outages.
