The development of power specific redlines for SSME safety monitoring

Over the past several years, there has been an increased awareness in the necessity for rocket engine health monitoring because of the cost and complexity of present and future systems. A current rocket engine system, the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME), combines a limited redline system with closed-loop control of the engine's thrust level and mixture ratio. Despite these features, 27 tests of the SSME have resulted in major incidents. An SSME transient model was used to examine the effect of variations in high pressure turbopump performance on various engine parameters. Based on analysis of the responses, several new parameters are proposed for further investigation as power-level specific redlines.

Enhanced element-specific modal formulations for flexible multibody dynamics

The accuracy of current flexible multibody formalisms based on assumed modes is examined in the context of standard spacecraft motions involving structural components undergoing both slow and fast overall translational and rotational motions as well as small deformations. Limitations of current techniques in treating: (1) element-specific coupling behavior of large motion and small deformation, and (2) motion-induced structural stiffness variations, are noted. The roles of nonlinear and linear elastic structural theories in accurately predicting transient large-displacement dynamic behavior of flexible multibody systems are examined in detail. Coupling effects between deformation and overall motion are carefully scrutinized in the context of assumed-mode discretization techniques. Consistently linearized beam, plate, and shell formulations involving in-plane stretch variables are proposed and shown to yield very accurate simulation results and extremely fast modal convergence for most motions involving small strains. In some particular cases, however, in which membrane stiffness dominates bending stiffness, a nonlinear strain formulation is required in order to capture proper coupling between deformation and overall motion.

Magnetic correlations in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 from NQR relaxation and specific heat

La-139 and Cu-63 Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) relaxation measurements in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 for O = to or less than 0.3 and in the temperature range 1.6 + 450 K are analyzed in terms of Cu(++) magnetic correlations and dynamics. It is described how the magnetic correlations that would result from Cu-Cu exchange are reduced by mobile charge defects related to x-doping. A comprehensive picture is given which explains satisfactorily the x and T dependence of the correlation time, of the correlation length and of the Neel temperature T(sub n)(x) as well as being consistent with known electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. It is discussed how, in the superconducting samples, the mobile defects also cause the decrease, for T yields T(sub c)(+) of the hyperfine Cu electron-nucleus effective interaction, leading to the coexistence of quasi-localized, reduced magnetic moments from 3d Cu electrons and mobile oxygen p-hole carriers. The temperature dependence of the effective hyperfine field around the superconducting transition yields an activation energy which could be related to the pairing energy. New specific heat measurements are also presented and discussed in terms of the above picture.

Accurate determination of specific heat at high temperatures using the flash diffusivity method

The flash diffusivity method of Parker et al. (1961) was used to measure accurately the specific heat of test samples simultaneously with thermal diffusivity, thus obtaining the thermal conductivity of these materials directly. The accuracy of data obtained on two types of materials (n-type silicon-germanium alloys and niobium), was + or - 3 percent. It is shown that the method is applicable up to at least 1300 K.

Specification of the scale and magnitude of thermals used to initiate convection in cloud models

Boundary layer similarity techniques are employed to specify the scale and intensity of a thermal perturbation used to initialize a cloud in a numerical cloud model. Techniques are outlined to specify the needed similarity variables from external information. Finally, the cloud model respone using the similarity scaled thermal is analyzed employing variations in the similarity variables giving an indication of the importance of the correct specification of the initiating thermal.

Network, system, and status software enhancements for the autonomously managed electrical power system breadboard. Volume 2: Protocol specification

This volume (2 of 4) contains the specification, structured flow charts, and code listing for the protocol. The purpose of an autonomous power system on a spacecraft is to relieve humans from having to continuously monitor and control the generation, storage, and distribution of power in the craft. This implies that algorithms will have been developed to monitor and control the power system. The power system will contain computers on which the algorithms run. There should be one control computer system that makes the high level decisions and sends commands to and receive data from the other distributed computers. This will require a communications network and an efficient protocol by which the computers will communicate. One of the major requirements on the protocol is that it be real time because of the need to control the power elements.

Formal specification and verification of a fault-masking and transient-recovery model for digital flight-control systems

The formal specification and mechanically checked verification for a model of fault-masking and transient-recovery among the replicated computers of digital flight-control systems are presented. The verification establishes, subject to certain carefully stated assumptions, that faults among the component computers are masked so that commands sent to the actuators are the same as those that would be sent by a single computer that suffers no failures.

Experimental thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and specific heat values for mixtures of nitrogen, oxygen, and argon

Experimental measurements of thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity obtained with a transient hot-wire apparatus are reported for three mixtures of nitrogen, oxygen, and argon. Values of the specific heat, Cp, are calculated from these measured values and the density calculated with an equation of state. The measurements were made at temperatures between 65 and 303 K with pressures between 0.1 and 70 MPa. The data cover the vapor, liquid, and supercritical gas phases for the three mixtures. The total reported points are 1066 for the air mixture (78.11 percent nitrogen, 20.97 percent oxygen, and 0.92 percent argon), 1058 for the 50 percent nitrogen, 50 percent oxygen mixture, and 864 for the 25 percent nitrogen, 75 oxygen mixture. Empirical thermal conductivity correlations are provided for the three mixtures.

Hydrogen test of a small, low specific speed centrifugal pump stage

A small, low specific speed centrifugal pump stage with a 2 inch tip diameter, .030 inch tip width shrouded impeller and volute collector was tested with liquid hydrogen as the pumped fluid. The hydrodynamic design of the pump stage is summarized and the noncavitating and cavitating performance results are presented. Test speeds were 60 and 80 percent of the 77,000 rpm design speed. Liquid hydrogen test results are compared with data from previous tests of the stage in water.

A method for interactive specification of multiple-block topologies

A method is presented for dealing with the vast amount of topological and other data which must be specified to generate a multiple-block computational grid. Specific uses of the graphical capabilities of a powerful scientific workstation are described which reduce the burden on the user of collecting and formatting such large amounts of data. A program to implement this method, 3DPREP, is described. A plotting transformation algorithm, some useful software tools, notes on programming, and a database organization are also presented. Example grids developed using the method are shown.

The metal abundance and specific energy of intracluster gas

The hot gas in the cores of rich galaxy clusters is metal-rich with nearly solar abundances of metals. It is not clear whether the metals were shed from galaxies via protogalactic winds or via ram-pressure stripping. It has been suggested that if metals were injected via centrally concentrated stripping, the overall abundances could be much less than those observed in cluster cores, diminishing the degree of stellar processing required. The observed energetics of intracluster gas can be used to deduce the metal injection mechanism, which in turn may allow the global metal abundance uncertainty to be resolved in the absence of spatially resolved X-ray spectra. Existing X-ray spectral and surface brightness data for galaxy clusters indicate that the gas in cool clusters has substantially greater specific energy than could have been gained through cluster collapse. Supernovae-driven protogalactic winds can provide this extra energy, while ram-pressure stripping cannot. Such protogalactic winds will distribute metals fairly homogeneously. Much processing of gas through stars is then required, with protogalaxies losing perhaps one-half of their initial luminous mass in metal-rich winds. Furthermore, the oxygen-to-iron ratio observed in two clusters indicates that the bulk of the iron in cluster gas was produced by Type II supernovae, not Type I supernovae, as is usually supposed.

Coaxial plasma thrusters for high specific impulse propulsion

A fundamental basis for coaxial plasma thruster performance is presented and the steady-state, ideal MHD properties of a coaxial thruster using an annular magnetic nozzle are discussed. Formulas for power usage, thrust, mass flow rate, and specific impulse are acquired and employed to assess thruster performance. The performance estimates are compared with the observed properties of an unoptimized coaxial plasma gun. These comparisons support the hypothesis that ideal MHD has an important role in coaxial plasma thruster dynamics.

Generating target system specifications from a domain model using CLIPS

The quest for reuse in software engineering is still being pursued and researchers are actively investigating the domain modeling approach to software construction. There are several domain modeling efforts reported in the literature and they all agree that the components that are generated from domain modeling are more conducive to reuse. Once a domain model is created, several target systems can be generated by tailoring the domain model or by evolving the domain model and then tailoring it according to the specified requirements. This paper presents the Evolutionary Domain Life Cycle (EDLC) paradigm in which a domain model is created using multiple views, namely, aggregation hierarchy, generalization/specialization hierarchies, object communication diagrams and state transition diagrams. The architecture of the Knowledge Based Requirements Elicitation Tool (KBRET) which is used to generate target system specifications is also presented. The preliminary version of KBRET is implemented in the C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS).
