VLBI Validation Project

Two training and three operational Deep Space Network experiments conducted in support of the very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) validation project are reported. Vector measurements using common benchmark locations at continental distances (Goldstone, Haystack, and the McDonald Observatory) with an accuracy goal on the order of 5 cm. were obtained and compared with laser ranging systems data.

Preliminary design work on a DSN VLBI correlator

The Deep Space Network is in the process of fielding high-density digital instrumentation recorders for support of the Pioneer Venus 1978 entry experiment and other related tasks. It has long been obvious that these recorders would also serve well as the recording medium for very long base interferometry (VLBI) experiments with relatively weak radio sources, provided that a suitable correlation processor for these tape recordings could be established. The overall design and current status of a VLBI correlator designed to mate with these tape recorders are described.

Lushbaugh, W. A.↗

Viking extended mission support

The Deep Space Network (DSN) support of Viking spacecraft activities and the DSN Viking command and tracking support are reported. The status of DSN Mark 3 data (MDS) subsystem implementation project related Viking testing is included.

Gillette, R. L.↗

Pioneer Venus 1978 mission support

The Tracking and Data System and Deep Space Network preparation and support activities for the Pioneer Venus 1978 Mission are described including prelaunch preparations. The status of multiprobe entry preparations and the differential long base interferometry wind measurement experiment are summarized.

Establishing a celestial VLBI reference frame. 1: Searching for VLBI sources

The Deep Space Network is currently engaged in establishing a new high-accuracy VLBI celestial reference frame. The present status of the task of finding suitable celestial radio sources for constructing this reference frame is discussed. To date, 564 VLBI sources were detected, with 166 of these lying within 10 deg of the ecliptic plane. The variation of the sky distribution of these sources with source strength is examined.

JPL 2-to-the-20th-power channel 300 MHz bandwidth digital spectrum analyzer

A million (two to the 20th power) channel, 300 MHz bandwidth, digital spectrum analyzer was considered. The design, fabrication, and maintenance philosophy of the modular, pipelined, fast fourier transform (FFT) hardware are described. The spectrum analyzer will be used to examine the region from 1.4 GHz to 26 GHz for radio frequency interference which may be harmful to present and future tracking missions of the Deep Space Network. The design has application to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence signals and radio science phenomena.

The gravitational wave detection experiment: Description and anticipated requirements

The experiment to detect gravitational waves in ultraprecise two-way Doppler data is described, as are the anticipated requirements for the Deep Space Network, the spacecraft, and the data processing system. The special feature which allows the usage of ultraprecise Doppler data for the possible detection of gravitational waves is a unique three-pulse signature which is a function of the spacecraft, earth, and gravitational wave propagation direction geometry. The pulses (fractional frequency shifts) result from effects which are conveniently described as follows: Clock speed-up (earth only effect) and buffeting (equal earth and spacecraft effect).
