Contrast reduction by the atmosphere and retrieval of nonuniform surface reflectance

A radiative transfer model is developed which gives the upward radiance at nadir for any 1-D Lambertian surface reflectance. This model is used to depict the atmospheric effect on the transmittance of contrast for any 1-D surface reflectance. Here by contrast we mean a general variation of the radiation field across the image. With the aid of this model an inversion algorithm is developed for retrieval of true surface reflectance from high resolution satellite data (e.g., Landsat). This inversion technique can be a useful tool for extraction of surface reflectance from satellite data in the case of a surface reflectance variable in one dimension only (e.g., seashore or near borders of big fields). A sensitivity study of the inversion procedure on the knowledge of atmospheric parameters and sensor calibration was performed. It is shown that this inversion technique is stable even in the presence of errors in the sensor calibration and the atmospheric parameters. The method was applied to Landsat data in two wavelengths. The results show reasonable dependence of the derived surface reflectance on the distance from the seashore.

Comparison of conventionally measured sea surface temperature and wind speed with data retrieved from satellite-borne microwave radiometry

The Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer aboard both the Seasat and Nimbus-7 satellites was designed to estimate sea surface temperature (SST) and wind speed (WS) over an extended range of atmospheric conditions. The retrieval technique is described briefly, and it is demonstrated in a case study that the instrument design goals (SST:1.5 C; WS:2 m/s) appear to be feasible.

The tethered retrievable platform concept and utilization

Main components of the current configuration of a proposed tethered satellite system (TSS) for deploying instrumentation up to 100 km upward or downward from the Orbiter in LEO are described. The TSS consists of the Deployer Module, the Tether, and the Satellite Module, and remains connected to the equipment in the Orbiter bay for the entire mission. The Deployer Module is mounted on a pallet, and has a boom, a tether control mechanism, and a tether control capability, in addition to data acquisition and control systems. The Satellite Module features a thermal control, electrical power and distribution, data management and communication, attitude determination, propulsion, and payload capability. Deployment is unpowered, taking advantage instead of gravity gradients to move the payload from the Orbiter. Safety features include a cutter mechanism to disengage the tether from the Orbiter if retrieval of the payload is judged to endanger the crew and the Orbiter.

Satellite retrieval and servicing operations with proximity operations modules

The concept of manned and unmanned proximity modules (POM) to assist the Orbiter in retrieval, servicing, and emergency operations of orbiting payloads is discussed. An unmanned POM, capable of examining or capturing and returning to the Orbiter large satellites which are station-keeping at distances up to one kilometer from the Orbiter, is presented and its design features defined. Also presented is the concept of a manned POM which is capable of capturing and maneuvering smaller payloads in or about the Orbiter payload bay. The manned POM also serves as a free flying work station used to support satellite servicing and provide a back-up to Orbiter situations when the remote manipulator is inoperative.

The Oklahoma Geographic Information Retrieval System

The Oklahoma Geographic Information Retrieval System (OGIRS) is a highly interactive data entry, storage, manipulation, and display software system for use with geographically referenced data. Although originally developed for a project concerned with coal strip mine reclamation, OGIRS is capable of handling any geographically referenced data for a variety of natural resource management applications. A special effort has been made to integrate remotely sensed data into the information system. The timeliness and synoptic coverage of satellite data are particularly useful attributes for inclusion into the geographic information system.

Satellite retrieval system

A satellite retrieval system with first and second pairs of coacting parallel bars are separately mounted in spaced parallel planes on the front of a spacecraft. The bars of one pair are at right angles to bars of the other pair, and together the two pairs of bars effect a variable aperture adapted to close around a rod extending from a second spacecraft to effect the capture of the latter.

The astronomical data base and retrieval system at NASA

More than 250 machine-readable catalogs of stars and extended celestial objects are now available at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) as the result of over a decade of catalog acquisition, verification and documentation. Retrieval programs are described which permit the user to obtain from a remote terminal bibliographical listings for stars; to find all celestial objects from a given list that are within a defined angular separation from each object in another list; to plot celestial objects on overlays for sky survey plate areas; and to search selected catalogs for objects by criteria of position, identification number, magnitude or spectral type.

Spaceborne lidar measurement accuracy - Simulation of aerosol, cloud, molecular density, and temperature retrievals

In connection with studies concerning the use of an orbiting optical radar (lidar) to conduct aerosol and cloud measurements, attention has been given to the accuracy with which lidar return signals could be measured. However, signal-measurement error is not the only source of error which can affect the accuracy of the derived information. Other error sources are the assumed molecular-density and atmospheric-transmission profiles, and the lidar calibration factor (which relates signal to backscatter coefficient). The present investigation has the objective to account for the effects of all these errors sources for several realistic combinations of lidar parameters, model atmospheres, and background lighting conditions. In addition, a procedure is tested and developed for measuring density and temperature profiles with the lidar, and for using the lidar-derived density profiles to improve aerosol retrievals.

Retrieval of stratospheric aerosol size distribution from atmospheric extinction of solar radiation at two wavelengths

A parametric study is presented of the effects of the size distribution and composition of stratospheric aerosols on the value R, the ratio of the extinction of solar radiation at wavelength 0.45 micron to the extinction at wavelength 1.0 micron. The aerosol size distributions under study comprise nine analytical expressions, including most of the stratospheric aerosol models used by investigators. The aerosol compositions considered are the supercooled sulfuric-acid droplets, with different weight percentages of H2SO4 in the aerosol. It is found that whereas R is not very sensitive to either the composition or the radii limits of the stratospheric aerosols under consideration, it is quite sensitive to the value of the variable parameter governing the mode radius of the size distribution of aerosol particles. The results of the parametric study underlie the method proposed here of retrieving the size distribution of aerosol particles in the stratosphere from the experimental results of the extinction of solar radiation at two wavelengths.

Resolution of vertical mixing-ratio profiles of atmospheric constituents retrieved from solar spectra

The relationship between the uncertainty and the resolution of the mixing-ratio profiles of absorbing gases retrieved from simulated occultation data has been investigated by analyzing sets of absorber amounts, corresponding to a constituent with a constant vertical mixing-ratio profile, along atmospheric paths observed by instruments at 0, 30, and 500 km. The vertical resolution below the instrument is limited by the number of observations and the SNR; it degrades exponentially with height and is independent of the instrument altitude; it is nearly 50 times better than the resolution obtainable above the instrument. An estimate of the resolution obtained by analyzing line shapes is included for comparison.

Water vapor profile retrieval simulation studies for the HIRS/MSU and AMTS/MSU sounders

A combined physical statistical method for the retrieval of atmospheric water vapor column densities has been developed at the Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheric Sciences. In this method differences between observed and calculated clear column brightness temperatures are used in a regression formalism to obtain estimates of integrated column densities in given atmospheric layers. The physics of the radiative transfer problem is contained in the calculated clear column brightness temperatures and in accounting for the effects of clouds on the observed radiances. The regression matrix is equivalent to a set of empirical sensitivity factors.

Comparison of GLAS retrieved cloud fields with model generated rainfall fields

Monthly mean fractional cloud cover for January and February 1979, retrieved from SOP 1 of FGGE, are compared with the total precipitation field derived diagonally from the GLAS analysis/forecast system for the same time period. The breakdown of cloudiness into day (3 AM) and night (3 PM) is consistent with maps of outgoing long wave and short wave radiation inferred from AVHRR data. Of the many regions of coincidence, there is a particularly striking phenomenon: west of the coast of Peru, at about 20 deg S, there is a distinct small scale maximum in precipitation which coincides precisely with a maximum in the cloudiness field. This maximum in cloudiness and precipitation does not appear in the NOAA/NESS fields of albedo and outgoing long wave radiation which are normally sensitive to cloud fields. These low level clouds with warm tops are a mainly nocturnal phenomenon.

Simultaneous retrieval of atmospheric temperatures and ray paths from occultation spectra

Simulated equivalent width data of weak lines in solar occultation spectra were analyzed to retrieve both the solar atmospheric temperature profile and the tangent heights of the rays. It was assumed that the mixing ratio of the absorbing gas was known, but it is not necessary to know the satellite height. By analyzing lines with temperature dependent and temperature independent intensities, temperatures accurate to 1 K and tangent heights to 0.25 km were determined over the range 20 to 90 km.

Storage, retrieval, and analysis of ST data

Space Telescope can generate multidimensional image data, very similar in nature to data produced with microdensitometers. An overview is presented of the ST science ground system between carrying out the observations and the interactive analysis of preprocessed data. The ground system elements used in data archival and retrieval are described and operational procedures are discussed. Emphasis is given to aspects of the ground system that are relevant to the science user and to general principles of system software development in a production environment. While the system being developed uses relatively conservative concepts for the launch baseline, concepts were developed to enhance the ground system. This includes networking, remote access, and the utilization of alternate data storage technologies.
