GoldSim E-Area Low-Level Waste Lacility Vadose Zone Model Benchmarking

This report documents the development and benchmarking of the E-Area Low-Level Waste Facility (ELLWF) GoldSim Engineered and Slit Trench (ET and ST) vadose zone models. Subsequent activities (beyond the scope of this effort) will couple the GoldSim-based vadose zone models to the GoldSim aquifer model, with the intent of performing stochastic analyses that couple all pertinent fate and transport processes from the ground surface up to the 100-m Point of Assessment (POA). The benchmarking presented within this report focuses on the Slit Trench 06 (ST06) bydrostratigraphic location that resides within the center set of slit trenches. These GoldSim-based vadose zone models are generic models capable of being benchmarked to any of the other trench locations within E-Area.

Proton Tunable Analog Transistor for Low Power Computing

This project was broadly motivated by the need for new hardware that can process information such as images and sounds right at the point of where the information is sensed (e.g. edge computing). The project was further motivated by recent discoveries by group demonstrating that while certain organic polymer blends can be used to fabricate elements of such hardware, the need to mix ionic and electronic conducting phases imposed limits on performance, dimensional scalability and the degree of fundamental understanding of how such devices operated. As an alternative to blended polymers containing distinct ionic and electronic conducting phases, in this LDRD project we have discovered that a family of mixed valence coordination compounds called Prussian blue analogue (PBAs), with an open framework structure and ability to conduct both ionic and electronic charge, can be used for inkjet-printed flexible artificial synapses that reversibly switch conductance by more than four orders of magnitude based on electrochemically tunable oxidation state. Retention of programmed states is improved by nearly two orders of magnitude compared to the extensively studied organic polymers, thus enabling in-memory compute and avoiding energy costly off-chip access during training. We demonstrate dopamine detection using PBA synapses and biocompatibility with living neurons, evoking prospective application for brain - computer interfacing. By application of electron transfer theory to in-situ spectroscopic probing of intervalence charge transfer, we elucidate a switching mechanism whereby the degree of mixed valency between N-coordinated Ru sites controls the carrier concentration and mobility, as supported by density functional theory (DFT) .

Advancing Electric System Resilience with Distributed Energy Resources: Key Questions and Resources

This resource has two complementary parts: (1) A list of questions that offers an initial starting point for state public utility commissions (commissions) to frame how they review proposed utility investments and considerations that could offer resilience benefits; (2) A list of relevant resources to improve a regulator's ability to oversee resilience investments and obtain the best possible solutions for customers. The list of resources includes a synopsis of relevant topics covered in each resource. This document is not intended to offer a complete picture of resilience literature, but instead suggests strategies for state regulators to convene conversations and make decisions to achieve better resilience outcomes for customers. It is meant to serve as a starting point for commissions to understand and incorporate resilience into regulatory processes. The list of questions and resources will not be perfectly suited to the particular needs of each commission. As the resilience conversation advances, regulators will need to take advantage of available resources to build their capacity to assess resilience risks, compare investment options, and evaluate performance.

Defect Detection Model Development for Large Scale Thermoplastic Printing

Large-format additive manufacturing (LFAM) offers several advantages, including high throughput, cost-effective pellet-fed extrusion, and the capability to produce large-scale structures. The main pain points of LFAM include start and stops during the printing process, warpage, long layer times that lead to bead freezing, and bead separation due to shrinkage. These issues can lead to overfill, underfill and buildup of material in different sections of a print. This can lead to hidden defects embedded within the printed layers, or even ultimate failure of the printed structure. This ensures these defects can only be identified through nondestructive testing (NDT) inspection methods after printing, which can be timely and costly. Aligned Vision work specializes in 2D projectors with visual inspection systems and machine learning. Traditionally system is used for composite layup and layup inspections. In this work we used the LFAM system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to create defect rich samples. The Aligned Vision inspection system then performed in-situ monitoring of the print process after each part was printed. This in-situ vision inspection system was used to develop a layer-by-layer inspection model that looks for overfill, underfill, and the buildup of defects using only a camera-based vision system. This leads to the assurance of high-quality production components.

Designing Recyclable Biomass-Based Polyesters (Final Technical Report)

This project successfully demonstrated the production of sustainable polyesters from biomass-derived monomers, offering properties on par with or superior to fossil-based plastics such as LLDPE and PBAT. Using renewable chemical platforms like furfural and HMF, we synthesized over eight novel monomers and nearly 100 aliphatic-aromatic polyesters. Among these, PPeAT and PDDF emerged as highly promising candidates for flexible packaging applications, exhibiting excellent mechanical performance, tunable thermal properties, and enhanced barrier characteristics. Key advances included the development of ring-opening polymerization strategies using cyclic monomer intermediates to produce high molecular weight materials with excellent control. The resulting polymers achieved biobased content of at least 44 wt.%. We also implemented chemical recycling via catalytic methanolysis, recovering over 90% of monomers from PPeAT at semi-pilot scale. This supports a circular economy approach by enabling material reuse without performance loss. Techno-economic and life cycle assessments confirmed that these polyesters can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50% compared to petroleum-derived alternatives. Favorable mechanical properties may further reduce material demand, and cost competitiveness was demonstrated under specific market conditions. Feedstock cost and environmental footprint were identified as primary levers for future optimization. In summary, the project met or closely approached all technical targets, including biodegradability, strength, and processing compatibility. While minor issues such as color and melting point variation remain, the results strongly support continued development and scale-up of these sustainable materials.

Application and Evaluation of Surrogate Models for Radiation Source Search

Surrogate models are increasingly required for applications in which first-principles simulation models are prohibitively expensive to employ for uncertainty analysis, design, or control. They can also be used to approximate models whose discontinuous derivatives preclude the use of gradient-based optimization or data assimilation algorithms. We consider the problem of inferring the 2D location and intensity of a radiation source in an urban environment using a ray-tracing model based on Boltzmann transport theory. Whereas the code implementing this model is relatively efficient, extension to 3D Monte Carlo transport simulations precludes subsequent Bayesian inference to infer source locations, which typically requires thousands to millions of simulations. Additionally, the resulting likelihood exhibits discontinuous derivatives due to the presence of buildings. To address these issues, we discuss the construction of surrogate models for optimization, Bayesian inference, and uncertainty propagation. Specifically, we consider surrogate models based on Legendre polynomials, multivariate adaptive regression splines, radial basis functions, Gaussian processes, and neural networks. We detail strategies for computing training points and discuss the merits and deficits of each method.

Fast-acting self-healing metallic fuse.

Description of a fast-acting nonmechanical self-healing mercury fuse capable of protecting a high current circuit or device from overcurrent fault damages. Basically the self-healing fuse consists of two enclosed mercury reservoirs connected by a fine capillary tube filled with mercury that serves as the fusing element. It is pointed out that a better understanding of the energy conversion process involved in the operation of the device could help explore other device configurations (such as a tapering geometry and use of magnetic field to drive the arc into the fuse wall on inductive loads, etc.) and thus extend the range of capabilities for this type of protective device.

Specification of mesospheric density, pressure, and temperature by extrapolation

A procedure is presented which employs an extrapolation technique to obtain estimates of density, pressure, and temperature up to 90 km from 52 km data. The resulting errors are investigated. The procedure is combined with a special temperature interpolation method around the stratopause to produce such estimates at eight levels between 36 km and 90 km from North American sectional chart data at 5, 2, and 0.4 mb. Fifth charts were processed to obtain mean values and standard deviations at grid points for midseasonal months from 1964 to 1966. The mean values were compared with Groves' model, and internal consistency tests were performed upon the statistics. Through application of the extrapolation procedure, the atmospheric structure of a stratospheric warming event is studied.

Door to door short haul.

Present drawbacks to short-haul air transportation are partly related to passenger and baggage processing at air terminals and ground access difficulties. It is pointed out that the widely used automobile is the most inefficient mode of transportation. Various new developments in the field of ground transportation are considered. It is suggested to develop an integrated transportation system which would replace the various competing modes of automobile, bus, rail, and air with a single system for moving people and goods from their origins to their destinations. The Intermodal Automated Transfer system discussed would treat the passenger, his baggage, and the seat in which he travels as a unit which would stay together throughout a trip, regardless of the carrier used.

On optimal nonlinear estimation. I - Continuous observation.

A generalization of Bucy's (1965) representation theorem is obtained under very weak hypotheses. The generalized theorem is shown to play the same role in the case of general optimal estimation for an arbitrary random process as does the Bucy theorem in the case of optimal filtering for a diffusion process. At least for the models considered, the possibility is pointed out to reduce all sequential estimation problems to the problem of filtering. Hence, filtering theory is seen to represent the core of estimation theory, and is believed to define the direction in which future research should be focused.

Submerged arc welding of heavy plate

The submerged arc process is particularly suitable for heavy plate welding because of its ability to combine very high deposit rates along with excellent quality. It does these things without the smoke and spatter often accompanying other processes. It is available today in several forms that are pointed to the fabricators of heavy sections with long, short or round about welds. Tandem arc full automatic equipment is particularly suitable for those long heavy welds where speed and deposit rate are of the first order. An attachment called long stick-out which makes use of the IR drop on long electrode extensions can be included on this equipment to increase deposition rates 50% or more.

An investigation of wave-particle interactions and particle dynamics using electron beams injected from sounding rockets

Electrons with energy up to 40 kV have been injected into semi-trapped orbits from sounding rockets at Wallops Island, Virginia, and at Fort Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. By directing the rocket trajectory to have a horizontal component which in direction and speed matched the bounce displacement of the injected electrons, it was possible to detect conjugate echoes at Wallops and possibly at Churchill, and to study the distribution of the echoes in space, time and energy. By combining observations of many echoes, a composite picture can be obtained of the beam patterns. Atmospheric scattering at the conjugate point of Wallops Island has been extensively studied, and the process produces a scale width of 5-10 m, but with an echo intensity which is only 10% of theoretical estimates.

Mean flow characteristics for the oblique impingement of an axisymmetric jet

The oblique impingement of an axisymmetric jet has been investigated. A summary of the data and the analytical interpretations of the dominant mechanisms which influence the flow are reported. The major characteristics of the shallow angle oblique jet impingement flow field are: (1) minimal dynamic spreading as revealed by the surface pressure field, (2) pronounced kinematic spreading as revealed by the jet flow velocity field, (3) a pronounced upstream shift of the stagnation point from the maximum pressure point, (4) the production of streamwise vorticity by the impingement process.

Data management for Large Space Telescope

The data management system for the Large Space Telescope (LST) must be capable of meeting requirements of 160 million bits per 95 min orbit with a bit error rate of less than 0.00001 for data. The system will be supported by the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System of the Space Tracking and Data Network. The on-board system includes a general purpose computer that controls the vehicle as a stable observation platform and the array of instruments used for data collection. The ground-based system comprises a Mission Operations Center (MOC), a Science Institute where instrument data is processed, and a communications service for the space and point-to-point data flow. The allocation of hardware and software between on-board and ground-based components to achieve design objectives of maximum flexibility at minimum cost is discussed.

The High Resolution Imaging Instrument for HEAO-B

The High Resolution Imaging Instrument for the HEAO-B X-ray Telescope satellite is designed to reproduce images of celestial X-ray sources in the range of 0.2 to 4.0 keV. It provides both imaging and temporal data. The basic detector is a two-stage microchannel plate with a crossed-grid charge detector. Preamplifiers, detector bias supplies, and some processing circuits are colocated with the detector. The remaining electronic circuits are located in a remote central electronic assembly. The processing system is designed for single-photon processing. The imaging data rate is limited to 100 data points per second. Non-imaging total-field count rate is acquired with a maximum dead time of 14 microseconds per event.

Evaluation of LANDSAT multispectral scanner images for mapping altered rocks in the east Tintic Mountains, Utah

The author has identified the following significant results. Positive findings of earlier evaluations of the color-ratio compositing technique for mapping limonitic altered rocks in south-central Nevada are confirmed, but important limitations in the approach used are pointed out. These limitations arise from environmental, geologic, and image processing factors. The greater vegetation density in the East Tintic Mountains required several modifications in procedures to improve the overall mapping accuracy of the CRC approach. Large format ratio images provide better internal registration of the diazo films and avoids the problems associated with magnifications required in the original procedure. Use of the Linoscan 204 color recognition scanner permits accurate consistent extraction of the green pixels representing limonitic bedrock maps that can be used for mapping at large scales as well as for small scale reconnaissance.
