Neptunium (V) Solubility in WIPP Brine: Presence and Absence of WIPP-Relevant Organic and Inorganic Ligands

The oxidation state and solubility of neptunium (Np) in 5 M NaCl and high ionic strength synthetic WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) brines were systematically investigated as a function of pCH+ (7-11) in the presence and absence of WIPP-relevant organic ligands, including EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), oxalate, citrate, and acetate, as well as inorganic ligands such as borate and carbonate at a temperature of 23 ± 2°C. This study was conducted through long-term batch solubility experiments spanning approximately 950 days, using an undersaturation approach. A comprehensive set of experimental and spectroscopic techniques, including UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy and Np L III -edge X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), was employed to identify the solubility-controlling Np solid phases and the predominant aqueous Np species present in the samples.

CACTI CSAPR2 Taranis Retrievals

Taranis is an end-to-end processing chain for radar data written in Python with C extension for computation performance. Features include: masking for quality control, specific differential phase (Kdp), attenuation correction for reflectivity factor (Z) and differential reflectivity (Zdr) in rain, and additional geophysical retrievals. Retrievals are mostly drawn from literature or open-source software when appropriate, and have been tested, tuned, and modified to work with one another cohesively rather than using isolated off-the-shelf algorithms. Incorporated algorithms include hydrometeor (echo) identification, rain water content, raindrop mass-weighted mean diameter (gamma size distribution assumption), and rainfall rate (QPE). Taranis data sets exist for CSAPR2 PPI, HSRHI, and sector RHI scans. Cartesian-gridded data sets were also produced as well as a near-surface rain rate retrieval. More details can be found in the README.

Summary of GFL Inverter Capability and Performance: Malawi [Slides]

This presentation provides a comprehensive comparison of inverter-based resource (IBR) technical requirements across multiple international grid codes - including IEEE 2800, ESO, EirGrid, and Malawi's evolving regulatory framework - to support capacity building for electricity-sector institutions in Malawi. It highlights key performance expectations for grid-following (GFL) inverters across critical domains such as primary and fast frequency response, ramping behavior, frequency and voltage ride-through capabilities, reactive power and voltage control, ROCOF withstand, phase jump tolerance, system strength considerations, protection schemes, and dynamic modeling requirements. Emphasizing a "Do no harm, do something, do more" philosophy, the document synthesizes best practices and operational benchmarks to guide the integration and stability of inverter-based resources within Malawi's power system. The presentation forms part of the SABESS Center of Excellence initiative supported by the Global Energy Alliance for People and the Planet.

Broadband RF-distribution amplifier

Radio frequency amplifier to distribute reference frequencies within communications systems and provide automatic gain control with low phase distortion is described. Use of photocell in electronic circuit to produce desired conditions is explained. Operation of entire amplifier circuit is analyzed.

Preparation of pigments for space-stable thermal control coatings

The identification and control of vapor phase reaction kinetics to produce pigments by homogeneous nucleation were achieved. A vapor phase apparatus was designed, fabricated, and calibrated through 1800 C. Vapor phase reactions were analyzed, calculations made, and powders of alumina, rutile, zinc orthotitanate (in a mixed phase), calcium tungstate, and lanthana were produced by homogeneous nucleation. Electron microscopy shows uniform particle morphology and size, and supports anticipated advantages of vapor-phase homogeneous nucleation; namely, purity, freedom from defects, and uniform particle sizing without grinding.

Optimal space communications techniques

Digital multiplication of two waveforms using delta modulation (DM) is discussed. It is shown that while conventional multiplication of two N bit words requires N2 complexity, multiplication using DM requires complexity which increases linearly with N. Bounds on the signal-to-quantization noise ratio (SNR) resulting from this multiplication are determined and compared with the SNR obtained using standard multiplication techniques. The phase locked loop (PLL) system, consisting of a phase detector, voltage controlled oscillator, and a linear loop filter, is discussed in terms of its design and system advantages. Areas requiring further research are identified.

The propagation of plane waves and higher order acoustic modes in multisectioned ducts

A theoretical and experimental study of acoustic propagation in an anechoically terminated multisectioned duct was performed. A unique source array consisting of two concentric rings of sources, providing phase and amplitude control in the radial as well as circumferential direction, was developed to generate plane waves and both spinning and non-spinning higher order modes. Measurement of attenuation and radial mode shapes were taken with various finite length liners inserted between the hard wall sections of a duct with an anechoic termination. A search technique was developed to find the complex eigenvalues for a liner under the assumption of a locally reacting boundary condition. The experimental results were compared with a theoretical analysis which includes the modal transmission and reflection at the interface of each duct section, and this indicated that the local reaction boundary condition is valid for three liner configurations.

A Theoretical and Experimental Study of Acoustic Propagation in Multisectioned Circular Ducts

The propagation of plane waves and higher order acoustic modes in a circular multisectioned duct was studied. A unique source array consisting of two concentric rings of sources, providing phase and amplitude control in the radial, as well as circumferential direction, was developed to generate plane waves and both spinning and nonspinning higher order modes. Measurements of attenuation and radial mode shapes were taken with finite length liners inserted between the hard wall sections of an anechoically terminated duct. Materials tested as liners included a glass fiber material and both sintered fiber metals and perforated sheet metals with a honeycomb backing. The fundamental acoustic properties of these materials were studied with emphasis on the attenuation of sound by the liners and the determination of local versus extended reaction behavior for the boundary condition. A search technique was developed to find the complex eigenvalues for a liner under the assumption of a locally reacting boundary condition.

Position error propagation in the simplex strapdown navigation system

The results of an analysis of the effects of deterministic error sources on position error in the simplex strapdown navigation system were documented. Improving the long term accuracy of the system was addressed in two phases: understanding and controlling the error within the system, and defining methods of damping the net system error through the use of an external reference velocity or position. Review of the flight and ground data revealed error containing the Schuler frequency as well as non-repeatable trends. The only unbounded terms are those involving gyro bias and azimuth error coupled with velocity. All forms of Schuler-periodic position error were found to be sufficiently large to require update or damping capability unless the source coefficients can be limited to values less than those used in this analysis for misalignment and gyro and accelerometer bias. The first-order effects of the deterministic error sources were determined with a simple error propagator which provided plots of error time functions in response to various source error values.

The propagation and attenuation of complex acoustic waves in treated circular and annular ducts

Measurements of attenuation and radial mode shapes were taken with finite length liners between the hard wall sections of an anechoically terminated duct. The experimental results were compared with a mathematical model for the multisectioned duct.
