Metastability and Degradation of CdTe Solar Cells Investigated by nm-Scale Electrical Potential Imaging

We report on investigations of reversible metastability and irreversible degradation of MZO/CdSeTe/CdTe devices from the perspective of electric field across the device using Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). The device showed reversible transitions between the light-soak state (LSS) with the best device efficiency and the dark-soak state (DSS) with an inferior efficiency. However, it showed an irreversible degradation state (DgS) driven by long-hour light soaking at an elevated temperature. The nm-scale KPFM electric field imaging on cross-sections of the devices revealed different anomalous electric field profiles. The electric field at the LSS exhibits a main peak inside the CdSeTe layer but not at the MZO/CdSeTe heterointerface, demonstrating that working junction of the device is a buried homojunction (BHJ). At the DSS, a second electric field peak was observed at the MZO/CdSeTe interface with a similar strength to the main BHJ, which probably caused the decrease in fill factor at the DSS. At the DgS, the electric field peak at the MZO/CdSeTe interface increased significantly and a third electric field was measured at the back contact of the device. Device modeling using COMSOL and in alignment with both the electric field and device current-voltage curves suggest that a slightly low n-doped CdSeTe in the region near the MZO/CdSeTe interface caused the BHJ, and that either a loss of MZO doping or increase of the conduction band offset spike due to long-term stress caused the fill factor-dominated degradation and the increased electric field near the MZO/CdSeTe interface at the DgS. The former, MZO doping decrease, is more plausible by referring the related literature.

Search for lightly ionizing particles in superCDMS and simulation of neutron backgrounds

The Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (SuperCDMS) is a direct-detection dark matter search experiment that primarily aims to search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) using state-of-the-art solid-state detection technology. During its operation at the Soudan underground laboratory, germanium detectors were operated with high bias voltage mode known as the CDMS low ionization threshold experiment (CDMSlite) to achieve below-keV thresholds. CDMSlite, for being able to measure small energy depositions in detectors, also provides sensitivity to Lightly Ionizing Particles (LIPs) with very small fractional charges. This thesis will discuss an analysis to search LIPs with the data acquired in CDMSlite mode. An important component for LIPs search is the expected energy-deposition distributions for LIPs falling on the CDMSlite detector. In this thesis, a simulation framework to calculate the energy-deposition distributions is developed. This thesis presents first direct-detection limits on the intensity of cosmogenic LIPs with electric charges smaller than e/(3 × 105) as well as the strongest limits for charges ≤ e/160, with a minimum intensity of 1.36 × 10-7 cm-2s-1sr-1 at charge e/160.In any rare-event search experiment, understanding background is crucial. Neutrons capable of mimicking dark matter signals are a major background for any dark matter search experiment. A simulationmore » study to estimate the neutron background for an India based dark matter search experiment at Jaduguda Underground Science Laboratory (JUSL) is performed. The experiment at JUSL will be the first phase of a proposed Dark matter search at India-based Neutrino Observatory (DINO). It will be a direct detection experiment with primary aims to search for WIMPs as dark matter candidates. In this thesis, we discuss the methodology of estimating neutron flux at JUSL and report the results. The total neutron flux reaching the laboratory above 1 MeV energy threshold is found to be 5.76(±0.69) × 10-6 cm-2s-1. The impact of neutron background on the sensitivity of the experiment to detect dark matter at JUSL is also discussed. The thesis is organized as follows. Chapter 1 provides a brief introduction to the Lightly Ionizing Particle (LIPs). The analysis to search LIPs in SuperCDMS is briefly outlined in the chapter. This chapter also discusses the importance of neutron background estimates in a dark matter search experiment, more specifically, in the context of a proposed India-based dark matter search experiment at Jaduguda Underground Science Laboratory. In Chapter 2, the SuperCDMS experiment is introduced. In Chapter 3, the framework developed to perform simulations for Lightly Ionizing Particles is presented. In Chapter 4, the LIPs search analysis with the CDMSlite data and the results are discussed. In Chapter 5, the simulation of neutron background and the feasibility of dark-matter search at JUSL is discussed. Finally, conclusions from all the results discussed in this thesis are presented in Chapter 6.« less

Design of High-Voltage Stable Hybrid Electrolyte with an Ultrahigh Li Transference Number

Considering the high energy consumption during processing, and the low compliance and adhesion of ceramic electrolytes, the integration of polymer into ceramic electrolytes provides a way to mitigate the interfacial issues. However, the severe ion concentration gradient, low ionic conductivity, and instability toward Li metal and high-voltage cathodes become the major concerns in applying hybrid electrolytes. In this work, we report a single-ionconducting hybrid electrolyte (SIE-LLZO) with 64 wt % Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) particles embedded in a fluoroboron-centered Li-conductive polymer framework (LiBFSIE). The SIE-LLZO electrolyte exhibited a high Li transference number of 0.94 and electrochemical stability up to 5.6 V vs Li/Li + . Promising averaged Coulombic efficiencies of 99.97% and 99.91% were achieved in cells with LiNi 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 O 2 and LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O2 cathodes for 400 and 200 cycles, respectively. Finally, the Li-conducting pathway in the hybrid electrolyte was further investigated by a 6 Li-to- 7 Li isotope replacement method, indicating that Li transport mainly relies on the LLZO and interface between LiBFSIE and LLZO.

Modular, Multifunction, Multiport and Medium Voltage Utility Scale SiC PV Inverter (Final Report)

This project is to develop and demonstrate a Modular, Multi-function, Multiport and Medium Voltage utility scale SiC solar inverter (M4 Inverter). The M4 Inverter is a next generation utility scale PV + storage inverter that can substantially reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) while providing grid friendly ancillary services. Conventional utility scale solar inverters includes three parts, a megawatt rated solar inverter, a low frequency transformer (LFT) and a medium voltage switch gear. The proposed M4 Inverter directly converts the DC output of solar panels to medium voltage AC, eliminating the bulky and costly LFT. The M4 Inverter also has a DC port to interface with an additional energy storage device. This plus its bidirectional power flow capability, allows multiple functions in addition to PV maximum power tracking be achieved. These additional functionalities include but not limited to reactive power support, peak shaving, fast frequency regulation and synthetic inertia. Predicted LCOE reductions with these added functionalities, improved efficiency and longer lifetime time are more than 30% compared with the 2017 utility scale solar LCOE. A 1MVA SiC M4 Inverter was developed and tested at high power level. The project has also advanced the state of the art in controller hardware in the loop simulation capability. Power electronic innovations introduced in the M4 Inverter includes 1700V SiC MOSFET application in 1500V PV system, soft switching three-port power converters and modular converter architecture.

Correlating Rate-Dependent Transition Metal Dissolution between Structure Degradation in Li-Rich Layered Oxides

Understanding the mechanism of the rate-dependent electrochemical performance degradation in cathodes is crucial to developing fast charging/discharging cathodes for Li-ion batteries. Here, in this work, taking Li-rich layered oxide Li 1.2 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 Mn 0.54 O 2 as the model cathode, the mechanisms of performance degradation at low and high rates are comparatively investigated from two aspects, the transition metal (TM) dissolution and the structure change. Quantitative analyses combining spatial-resolved synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging, synchrotron X–ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques reveal that low-rate cycling leads to gradient TM dissolution and severe bulk structure degradation within the individual secondary particles, and especially the latter causes lots of microcracks within secondary particles, and becomes the main reason for the fast capacity and voltage decay. In contrast, high-rate cycling leads to more TM dissolution than low-rate cycling, which concentrates at the particle surface and directly induces the more severe surface structure degradation to the electrochemically inactive rock-salt phase, eventually causing a faster capacity and voltage decay than low-rate cycling. These findings highlight the protection of the surface structure for developing fast charging/discharging cathodes for Li-ion batteries.

Lithium-sulfur dioxide batteriess on Mars Rovers

Lithium-sulfur dioxide batteries exhibit voltage delay, which tends to increase at low discharge temperatures, especially after extended storage at warm temperatures. In the absence of a depassivation circuit, as provided on earlier missions, e.g., Galileo, we were required to depassivate the lander primary batteries in a unique manner. The batteries were brought onto a shunt-regulated bus set at preselected discharge voltages, thus affecting depassivation during constant discharge voltage. Several ground tests were performed, on cells, cell strings and battery assembly with five parallel strings, to identify optimum shunt voltages and durations of depassivation. We also examined the repassivation of lithium anodes, subsequent to depassivation. IIn this paper, we will describe these studies, in detail, as well as the depassivation of the lander flight batteries on both Spirit and 0pportunity rovers prior to the EDL sequence and their performance during landing on Mars.

Charge-Based Droop Control Addressing Control Saturation for Low-Inertia Converters

With bulky dc-link capacitors/inductors, traditional voltage-source converters (VSCs) and current-source converters (CSCs) feature a large inertia to facilitate the converter control under large transients. To achieve high power density with reduced cost, low-inertia converters (LICs) featuring significantly reduced dc-link capacitors/inductors have attracted growing attention. However, without bulky dc-link energy buffer, LICs are prone to control saturation under large transients, resulting in undesired oscillation and instability. This issue cannot be managed by traditional proportional-integral based control due to the low inertia. And it will deteriorate when several LICs are connected in series. To address this challenge in LICs, a model-predictive control (MPC) with a computation-inexpensive feed-forward compensation method has been proposed to provide fast dynamic responses. But it would suffer control saturation under larger transients that degrades the control performance. In this article, a charge-based droop control (CDC) is proposed to address this remaining challenge. This paper firstly analyzes the control saturation challenge in LICs by using a tri-port soft-switching solid-state transformer as an example. Next, the operating principle of the proposed CDC are introduced. Two different implementation approaches are discussed in detail. Lastly, the proposed scheme is validated in simulation with a high-fidelity model of hardware prototype. As a result, the proposed CDC eliminated the 2 kHz oscillation and reduced the dc-link ripple and overshoot due to control saturation by 75% and 50%, respectively.

Modeling of Electro Optic Polymer Electrical Characteristics in a 3 layer Optical Waveguide Modulator

The electrical characteristics of electro optic polymer waveguide modulators are often described by the bulk reactance of the individual layers. However, the resistance and capacitance between the layers can significantly alter the electrical performance of a waveguide modulator. These interface characteristics are related to the boundary charge density and are strongly affected by the adhesion of the layers in the waveguide stack. An electrical reactance model has been derived to investigate this phenomenon at low frequencies. The model shows the waveguide stack frequency response has no limiting effects below the microwave range and that a true DC response requires a stable voltage for over 1000 hours. Thus, reactance of the layers is the key characteristic of optimizing the voltage across the core layer, even at very low frequencies (> 10(exp -6) Hz). The results of the model are compared with experimental data for two polymer systems and show quite good correlation.

Low power arcjet performance

An experimental investigation was performed to evaluate arc jet operation at low power. A standard, 1 kW, constricted arc jet was run using nozzles with three different constrictor diameters. Each nozzle was run over a range of current and mass flow rates to explore stability and performance in the low power engine. A standard pulse-width modulated power processor was modified to accommodate the high operating voltages required under certain conditions. Stable, reliable operation at power levels below 0.5 kW was obtained at efficiencies between 30 and 40 percent. The operating range was found to be somewhat dependent on constrictor geometry at low mass flow rates. Quasi-periodic voltage fluctuations were observed at the low power end of the operating envelope, The nozzle insert geometry was found to have little effect on the performance of the device. The observed performance levels show that specific impulse levels above 350 seconds can be obtained at the 0.5 kW power level.

Orion Power Transfer: Impacts of a Battery-on-Bus Power System Architecture

The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) has the capability to transfer power to a co-manifested payload (CPL) during transit from low-Earth orbit to the lunar vicinity. This paper discusses a time-phased parametric power analysis to determine the Orion power transfer capability limit. Charge and discharge curves were generated for various power transfer conditions and measured against various minimum system voltage limits. The Orion electrical power system (EPS) utilizes an unregulated bus architecture, which has important implications when the system is operating under very high load demand conditions, such as during power transfer. This analysis highlights three important effects of this architecture. First, increasing load demand decreases the maximum state of charge (SOC) the batteries can reach when charging. Second, increasing load demand also decreases the allowable battery depth of discharge. These two together can significantly reduce the effective useable capacity of the batteries. Finally, low battery voltage decreases the power generation of the solar arrays. This can lead to significantly longer recharge times or even push the system out of energy balance. These effects have important implications for mission design and vehicle operations and must be accounted for when conducting sizing and design of an unregulated spacecraft EPS.

Improved L-C resonant decay technique for Q measurement of quasilinear power inductors: New results for MPP and ferrite powdered cores

The L-C resonant decay technique for measuring circuit Q or losses is improved by eliminating the switch from the inductor-capacitor loop. A MOSFET switch is used instead to momentarily connect the resonant circuit to an existing voltage source, which itself is gated off during the decay transient. Very reproducible, low duty cycle data could be taken this way over a dynamic voltage range of at least 10:1. Circuit Q is computed from a polynomial fit to the sequence of the decaying voltage maxima. This method was applied to measure the losses at 60 kHz in inductors having loose powder cores of moly permalloy and an Mn-Zn power ferrite. After the copper and capacitor losses are separated out, the resulting specific core loss is shown to be roughly as expected for the MPP powder, but anomalously high for the ferrite powder. Possible causes are mentioned.
