Hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomaly from lattice QCD with infinite volume QED at physical pion mass

The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, (g–2)⁢/2, is computed in the infinite volume QED framework with lattice QCD. We report $a^{HLbL}_μ$ = 12.47⁢(1.15)⁢(0.95) ×10 –10 where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The result is mainly based on the 2+1 flavor Möbius domain wall fermion ensemble with inverse lattice spacing a –1 = 1.73 GeV, lattice size L = 5.5 fm, and m π = 139 MeV, generated by the RBC-UKQCD collaborations. The leading systematic error of this result comes from the lattice discretization. This result is consistent with previous determinations.

Systematic input scheme for many-boson Hamiltonians with applications to the two-dimensional 𝜙 4 theory

We develop a novel, systematic input scheme for many-boson Hamiltonians in order to solve field theory problems within the light-front Hamiltonian formalism via quantum computing. We present our discussion of this input scheme based on the light-front Hamiltonian of the two-dimensional ϕ 4 theory. In our input scheme, we employ a set of quantum registers, where each register encodes the occupation of a distinct boson mode as binaries. We squeeze the boson operators of each mode and present the Hamiltonian in terms of unique combinations of the squeezed-boson operators. We design the circuit modules for these unique combinations. Based on these circuit modules, we block encode the many-boson Hamiltonian utilizing the idea of quantum walk. For demonstration purposes, we present the spectral calculations of the Hamiltonian utilizing the hybrid quantum-classical symmetry-adapted quantum Krylov subspace diagonalization algorithm based on our input scheme, where the quantum computations are performed with the IBM Qiskit quantum simulator. The results of the hybrid calculations agree with exact results. Here, we can incorporate the input scheme in this work with the input scheme for many-fermion Hamiltonians; they jointly offer new pathways to solving the structure and dynamics of more general field theory problems on future fault-tolerant quantum computers.

Physical-mass calculation of ρ ( 770 ) and K * ( 892 ) resonance parameters via π π and K π scattering amplitudes from lattice QCD

We present our study of the ρ ( 770 ) and K * ( 892 ) resonances from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) employing domain-wall fermions at physical quark masses. We determine the finite-volume energy spectrum in various momentum frames and obtain phase-shift parametrizations via the Lüscher formalism and as a final step the complex resonance poles of the π π and K π elastic scattering amplitudes via an analytical continuation of the models. By sampling a large number of representative sets of underlying energy-level fits, we also assign a systematic uncertainty to our final results. This is a significant extension to data-driven analysis methods that have been used in lattice QCD to date, due to the two-step nature of the formalism. Our final pole positions, M + i Γ / 2 , with all statistical and systematic errors exposed, are M K * = 893 ( 2 ) ( 8 ) ( 54 ) ( 2 ) MeV and Γ K * = 51 ( 2 ) ( 11 ) ( 3 ) ( 0 ) MeV for the K * ( 892 ) resonance and M ρ = 796 ( 5 ) ( 15 ) ( 48 ) ( 2 ) MeV and Γ ρ = 192 ( 10 ) ( 28 ) ( 12 ) ( 0 ) MeV for the ρ ( 770 ) resonance. The four differently grouped sources of uncertainties are, in the order of occurrence: statistical, data-driven systematic, an estimation of systematic effects beyond our computation (dominated by the fact that we employ a single lattice spacing), and the error from the scale-setting uncertainty on our ensemble. Flavor patterns of fundamental particles from quantum entanglement?

The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, which controls flavor mixing between the three generations of quark fermions, is a key input to the standard model of particle physics. In this paper, we identify a surprising connection between quantum entanglement and the degree of quark mixing. Focusing on a specific limit of 2 → 2 quark scattering mediated by electroweak bosons, we find that the quantum entanglement generated by scattering is minimized when the CKM matrix is almost (but not exactly) diagonal, in qualitative agreement with observation. With the discovery of neutrino masses and mixings, additional angles are needed to parametrize the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) matrix in the lepton sector. Applying the same logic, we find that quantum entanglement is minimized when the PMNS matrix features two large angles and a smaller one, again in qualitative agreement with observation, plus a hint for suppressed C P violation. We speculate on the (unlikely but tantalizing) possibility that minimization of quantum entanglement might be a fundamental principle that determines particle physics input parameters. Generalized symmetries of nonsupersymmetric orbifolds

We determine generalized symmetries for 4D theories engineered via type II strings on nonsupersymmetric orbifold backgrounds ℝ 3,1 × ℝ 6 /Γ. Probe branes detect generalized symmetries via the adjacency matrix for fermionic degrees of freedom in an associated quiver gauge theory. In situations where the tachyons are sequestered away from the boundary 𝑆 5 /Γ, this exactly matches the result extracted from singular homology. In situations with an unsequestered tachyon which stretches out to the boundary, the presence of tachyonic pulses partitions up the space into several distinct sectors, and the net contribution again matches with the answer expected via quiver methods. For IIA backgrounds, the presence of a localized closed string tachyon leads to transitions in the spectrum of states, generalized symmetries, higher-group symmetries, as well as the level matrix of the associated symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT). For IIB backgrounds with a stack of spacetime filling probe D3-branes, the onset of a radiatively generated potential leads to similar considerations involving scale dependent transitions in the symmetries of the theory, including structures such as duality defects/interfaces.

Flavor constraints in a generational three-Higgs-doublet model

We propose a three-Higgs-doublet model (3HDM) that goes beyond natural flavor conservation and in which each of the three Higgs doublets couples mainly to a single generation of fermions via nonstandard Yukawa structures. A hierarchy in the vacuum expectation values of the three Higgs doublets can partially address the Standard Model flavor puzzle. In light of the experimentally observed 125 GeV Higgs boson, we primarily work within a 3HDM alignment limit such that a Standard Model-like Higgs is recovered. In order to reproduce the observed Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa mixing among quarks, the neutral Higgs bosons of the theory necessarily mediate flavor changing neutral currents at the tree level. We consider constraints from neutral kaon, B meson, and D meson mixing as well as from the rare leptonic decays B s / B 0 / K L → μ + μ − / e + e − . We identify regions of parameter space in which the new physics Higgs bosons can be as light as a TeV or even lighter. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Direct detection of dark baryons naturally suppressed by ℋ-parity

We identify symmetries in a broad class of vectorlike confining dark sectors that forbid the leading electromagnetic moments that would ordinarily mediate dark baryon scattering with the Standard Model. The absence of these operators implies dark baryon dark matter has much smaller cross sections for elastic scattering off nuclei, leading to suppressed direct detection signals. In the confined description, we identify an “ℋ-parity” symmetry that exists in any dark sector with dark quarks transforming under a vectorlike representation of a new confining SU(𝑁 𝑐 ) gauge theory as well as a vectorlike representation of the electroweak group SU⁡(2) 𝐿 . The parity is independent of 𝑁 𝑐 and 𝑁 𝑓 , though it is essential that the dark quarks are neutral under hypercharge. This parity forbids dark hadron electric and magnetic dipole moments, charge radius, and anapole moment, while permitting dimension-7 operators that include polarizability, electroweak loop-induced interactions, and lower-dimensional electromagnetic transition moments between different neutral dark baryon states. We work out an explicit example, 𝑁 𝑐 = 𝑁 𝑓 = 3, that is the most minimal theory with fermionic dark baryons. In this specific model, we use the nonrelativistic quark model to show the magnetic dipole moment and charge radius vanish, while the transition moments are nonzero, consistent with ℋ-parity. We discuss the implications of a suppressed direct detection signal, emphasizing that this broad class of models provide a well-motivated target for future colliders.

Field space geometry and nonlinear supersymmetry

We propose a geometric formulation of effective field theories via nonlinear supersymmetry. Nonsupersymmetric particles are embedded in constrained superfields governed by a nonlinear σ model, and operators are collected into potentials on the target space. The use of chiral superfields standardizes the treatment of flavor across scalars and fermions, and the minimal jet bundle extension makes invariance under derivative field redefinitions manifest. Fast and scalable quantum Monte Carlo simulations of electron-phonon models

We introduce methodologies for highly scalable quantum Monte Carlo simulations of electron-phonon models, and report benchmark results for the Holstein model on the square lattice. The determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) method is a widely used tool for simulating simple electron-phonon models at finite temperatures, but incurs a computational cost that scales cubically with system size. Alternatively, near-linear scaling with system size can be achieved with the hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) method and an integral representation of the Fermion determinant. Here, we introduce a collection of methodologies that make such simulations even faster. To combat "stiffness" arising from the bosonic action, we review how Fourier acceleration can be combined with time-step splitting. To overcome phonon sampling barriers associated with strongly-bound bipolaron formation, we design global Monte Carlo updates that approximately respect particle-hole symmetry. To accelerate the iterative linear solver, we introduce a preconditioner that becomes exact in the adiabatic limit of infinite atomic mass. Finally, we demonstrate how stochastic measurements can be accelerated using fast Fourier transforms. Here, these methods are all complementary and, combined, may produce multiple orders of magnitude speedup, depending on model details.

Spin-Canting-Induced Band Reconstruction in the Dirac Material Ca 1 – x Na x MnBi 2

The ternary A MnBi 2 ( A is alkaline as well as rare-earth atom) materials provide an arena for investigating the interplay between low-dimensional magnetism of the antiferromagnetic MnBi layers and the electronic states in the intercalated Bi layers, which harbor relativistic fermions. We report on a comprehensive study of the optical properties and magnetic torque response of Ca 1–x Na x MnBi 2 . Our findings give evidence for a spin canting occurring at T s ~50–100 K. Thus, with the support of first-principles calculations we establish a direct link between the spin canting and the reconstruction of the electronic band structure, having immediate implications for the spectral weight reshuffling in the optical response, signaling a partial gapping of the Fermi surface, and the dc transport properties below T s .

Impurity-Induced Anomalous Thermal Hall Effect in Chiral Superconductors

Chiral superconductors exhibit novel transport properties that rely on the topology of the order parameter, topology of the Fermi surface, the spectrum of bulk and edge Fermionic excitations, and the structure of the impurity potential. In the case of electronic heat transport, impurities induce an anomalous (zero-field) thermal Hall conductivity that is easily orders of magnitude larger than the quantized edge contribution. The effect originates from branch-conversion scattering of Bogoliubov quasiparticles by the chiral order parameter, induced by potential scattering. The former transfers angular momentum between the condensate and the excitations that transport heat. The anomalous thermal Hall conductivity is shown to depend to the structure of the electron-impurity potential, as well as the winding number ν of the chiral order parameter $Δ(p)=|Δ(p)|e^{iν\phi_p}$. The results provide quantitative formulas for interpreting heat transport experiments seeking to identify broken T and P symmetries, as well as the topology of the order parameter for chiral superconductors.

Quantum Statistics of Vortices from a Dual Theory of the X Y Ferromagnet

In this work, we extend the well-known mapping between the easy-plane ferromagnet and electrostatics in d = 2 spatial dimensions to dynamical and quantum phenomena in a d = 2+1 spacetime. Ferromagnetic vortices behave like quantum particles with an electric charge equal to the vortex number and a magnetic flux equal to the transverse spin of the vortex core. Vortices with half-integer core spin exhibit fermionic statistics.

First-Principles Calculation of Electroweak Box Diagrams from Lattice QCD

We present the first realistic lattice QCD calculation of the $γ W$-box diagrams relevant for beta decays. The nonperturbative low-momentum integral of the $γ W$ loop is calculated using a lattice QCD simulation, complemented by the perturbative QCD result at high momenta. Using the pion semileptonic decay as an example, we demonstrate the feasibility of the method. By using domain wall fermions at the physical pion mass with multiple lattice spacings and volumes, we obtain the axial γ W -box correction to the semileptonic pion decay, $\square$$\frac{VA}{γW}|_π$ = 2.830 (11) stat (26 )syst × 10 –3 , with the total uncertainty controlled at the level of ~1% . This study sheds light on the first-principles computation of the $γ W$-box correction to the neutron decay, which plays a decisive role in the determination of $|V_ud|$ .

Thermal and Quantum Melting Phase Diagrams for a Magnetic-Field-Induced Wigner Solid

A sufficiently large perpendicular magnetic field quenches the kinetic (Fermi) energy of an interacting two-dimensional (2D) system of fermions, making them susceptible to the formation of a Wigner solid (WS) phase in which the charged carriers organize themselves in a periodic array in order to minimize their Coulomb repulsion energy. In low-disorder 2D electron systems confined to modulation-doped GaAs heterostructures, signatures of a magnetic-field-induced WS appear at low temperatures and very small Landau level filling factors ($\textit{ν}$ ≃ 1/5). In dilute GaAs 2D hole systems, on the other hand, thanks to the larger hole effective mass and the ensuing Landau level mixing, the WS forms at relatively higher fillings ($\textit{ν}$ ≃ 1/3). Here we report our measurements of the fundamental temperature vs filling phase diagram for the 2D holes’ WS-liquid thermal melting. Moreover, via changing the 2D hole density, we also probe their Landau level mixing vs filling WS-liquid quantum melting phase diagram. In this work, we find our data to be in good agreement with the results of very recent calculations, although intriguing subtleties remain.

Helical Edge States and Quantum Phase Transitions in Tetralayer Graphene

Helical conductors with spin-momentum locking are promising platforms for Majorana fermions. Here we report observation of two topologically distinct phases supporting helical edge states in charge neutral Bernal-stacked tetralayer graphene in Hall bar and Corbino geometries. As the magnetic field B ⊥ and out-of-plane displacement field D are varied, we observe a phase diagram consisting of an insulating phase and two metallic phases, with 0, 1, and 2 helical edge states, respectively. These phases are accounted for by a theoretical model that relates their conductance to spin-polarization plateaus. Transitions between them arise from a competition among interlayer hopping, electrostatic and exchange interaction energies. Finally, our work highlights the complex competing symmetries and the rich quantum phases in few-layer graphene.

Measurements of $t\overline tH$ Production and the CP Structure of the Yukawa Interaction between the Higgs Boson and Top Quark in the Diphoton Decay Channel

The first observation of the t t ¯ H process in a single Higgs boson decay channel with the full reconstruction of the final state ( H → γ γ ) is presented, with a significance of 6.6 standard deviations ( σ ). The C P structure of Higgs boson couplings to fermions is measured, resulting in an exclusion of the pure C P -odd structure of the top Yukawa coupling at 3.2 σ . The measurements are based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb – 1 . The cross section times branching fraction of the t t ¯ H process is measured to be σ t t ¯ H B γ γ = 1.56 – 0.32 + 0.34 fb , which is compatible with the standard model prediction of 1.13 – 0.11 + 0.08 fb . The fractional contribution of the C P -odd component is measured to be f C P H t t = 0.00 ± 0.33 .

Spin Polarizations in a Covariant Angular-Momentum-Conserved Chiral Transport Model

Using a covariant and angular-momentum-conserved chiral transport model, which takes into account the spin-orbit interactions of chiral fermions in their scatterings via the side jumps, we study the quark spin polarization in quark matter. For a system of rotating and unpolarized massless quarks in an expanding box, we find that side jumps can dynamically polarize the quark spin and result in a final quark spin polarization consistent with that of thermally equilibrated massless quarks in a self-consistent vorticity field. Further, for the quark matter produced in noncentral relativistic heavy ion collisions, we find that in the medium rest frame both the quark local spin polarizations in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane and along the longitudinal beam direction show an azimuthal angle dependence in the transverse plane similar to those observed in experiments for the Lambda hyperon.

The theory is formulated in terms of the trial states describing the Girvin–MacDonald–Platzman mode and its fermionic counterpart. These modes are superpartners of each other in a concrete sense, which we elucidate.
