This research was motivated by the desire to obtain a measurement of heat-flow in overdense regions of a laser ablated plasma for the first time using a high energy proton beam. For sufficiently high energies, the proton beam can pass through overdense regions and only be deflected by electric and magnetic fields. As the transport of magnetic fields in a plasma are intrinsically linked to the transport of thermal energy, it was posited that such a measurement could be used to infer a heat-flow. While the project did not prove the method to be infeasible, difficulties with understanding the proton radiographs without an imposed magnetic field made the final aim of this project unreached. Instead, however, a closer understanding of proton radiographs of laser-solid interactions without an imposed field has been obtained. 5 shot days on The OMEGA Laser Facility have been awarded (3 through ICF and 2 as ride-along) to further investigate some of these features. Extrapolating current results to hohlraum conditions has the magnetic energy being a significant (10%) fraction of the laser drive energy, which has the potential to explain the NIF hohlraum drive deficit.

As one of the most energy-intensive end-uses in the commercial buildings sector, supermarkets consume around 50 kWh/ft 2 (or 537.6 kWh/m 2 ) of electricity annually, or more than 2 million kWh of electricity per year for a typical store. The biggest consumer of energy in a supermarket is its refrigeration system, which accounts for 40–60% of its total electricity usage and is equivalent to about 2–3% of the total energy consumed by commercial buildings in United States, or around 0.5 quadrillion Btu (or 0.53 quadrillion KJ). Also, the supermarket refrigeration system is one of the biggest consumers of refrigerants. Current supermarket refrigeration systems rely on high global warming potential hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants. Reducing refrigerant usage or using environment friendly alternatives can result in significant climate benefits. Transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems have attracted more attention in recent years because of their zero-carbon emission advantages compared with traditional refrigerants. These systems are widely used in commercial buildings such as supermarkets. The refrigeration system can also be adapted to handle flexible building loads and be integrated into grid response transactive control to balance the supply and demand of the electric grid. Even minor improvements in the efficiency and operational reliability of supermarket refrigeration systems can create significant value in terms of saving energy, improving food quality, protecting the environment, reducing carbon footprint, and enhancing electric grid resilience.
The report summarizes key tasks performed to develop a toolkit for detecting cyber-attack events in instrumentation and control (I&C) systems of nuclear power plants. The toolkit connects the state-of-the-art GPWR Simulator with the RELAP5 code providing best-estimate nuclear steam supply system (NSSS) analyses, via the application programming interface (API), and allows users to introduce potential cyber-attack scenarios into power plant operational simulation. This summary for the project reflects topical reports submitted during the project as well as a journal paper published in 2022. The focus areas of the summary include: (1) modeling I&C systems for the AP1000 Generation III+ nuclear plant and GPWR simulator, (2) simulation and monitoring of plant response to cyber-attack events, (3) API structure for the toolkit interfacing the GPWR simulator and RELAP5 code, and (4) restructuring of the three-loop NSSS software of GPWR to model the two-loop AP1000 structure. Discussed in some details are (a) the attack tree analysis assessing the susceptibility of the AP1000 I&C system, resulting in reactor trips, in terms of the attack possibility and component sensitivity and (b) realistic estimation of the time to steam generator trip due to cyber-intrusions in the GPWR Simulator. Finally, sample demonstrations of the cyber-security tool kit, in the form of the GPWR-RELAP5 API, are summarized.

The Neutron Imaging team is readying for the NIS2 polar LOS development and future improvements to data quality on all LOS given consistently higher yields at NIF. Next-gen nano guide scintillators for NIS2 and CMOS cameras to replace outdated CCDs will be studied. Digital image plates will be tested for better data quality on passive imaging systems. The transition into the ignition regime is expected to show a significant signature in the ablator areal density. In the marginal ignition regime, a decrease of 12C-rhoR (ablator areal density) is expected but once the burn propagation produces a shock and compresses the ablator the trend reverses. GCD with the PD-PMT can resolve this effect in the ablator areal density by a temporal shift in the carbon signal. To give quantitative results a calibration of the detector for the Hohlraum/TMP signal is needed. Shots using Al, Si, and Au pucks will yield the needed information to move forward with this project.
This Phase 1 Report details our Phase 1 progress in proving the feasibility of a highly integrated, highly miniaturized sensor ball. The ball contains sensors, analog to digital converters, memory, a clock, and an acoustic communications module all integrated onto a single silicon chip. Phase 2 is to focus on the application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). Phase 1 piecewise proves the feasibility of this innovation by examining a few critical subsystems including the communications module and inertial sensor performance. Acoustic simulations of an acoustically active and traceable proppant are also performed and summarized in this report.
