Surge current and electron swarm tunnel tests of thermal blanket and ground strap materials

The results are described of a series of current conduction tests with a thermal control blanket to which grounding straps have been attached. The material and the ground strap attachment procedure are described. The current conduction tests consisted of a surge current examination of the ground strap and a dilute flow, energetic electron deposition and transport through the bulk of the insulating film of this thermal blanket material. Both of these test procedures were used previously with thermal control blanket materials.

Temperature compensated current source

A current source was designed which is substantially independent of variations of temperature. The current source may be made either to have a linear dependence upon changes of temperature or, by the simple addition of a resistor, may be made substantially independent of temperature variations. Since the current source consists only of transistors of one conductivity type and resistors, it is ideally suited for manufacture in the form of a monolithic integrated circuit.

Investigation of the double exponential in the current-voltage characteristics of silicon solar cells

A theoretical analysis is presented of certain peculiarities of the current-voltage characteristics of silicon solar cells, involving high values of the empirical constant A in the diode equation for a p-n junction. An attempt was made in a lab experiment to demonstrate that the saturation current which is associated with the exponential term qV/A2kT of the I-V characteristic, with A2 roughly equal to 2, originates in the space charge region and that it can be increased, as observed on ATS-1 cells, by the introduction of additional defects through low energy proton irradiation. It was shown that the proton irradiation introduces defects into the space charge region which give rise to a recombination current from this region, although the I-V characteristic is, in this case, dominated by an exponential term which has A = 1.

The relationship between field-aligned current, carried by suprathermal electrons, and the auroral arc

Data from four auroral sounding rockets, which directly measured field-aligned currents with particle detectors, are presented. The largest fraction of the field-aligned current carried by electrons was (1) due to precipitating electrons of energy less than 1 keV; (2) located spatially at the edges of the auroral luminosity. A model is suggested in which these currents couple the ionosphere to the magnetosphere and produce the pre-breakup auroral arc.

Quantitative effect of initial current rise on pumping the double-pulsed copper chloride laser

The laser energy at optimum time delay of a double-pulsed CuCl laser was experimentally determined to be a logarithmic function of the initial current rise of the pumping pulse over the total circuit inductance range 1 to 12 microhenrys. The minimum delay was found to decrease with initial current rise, which implies that faster rising current pulses are more efficient at pumping copper atoms from the ground state to the upper laser level because lasing threshold occurs with a higher population in the lower laser level.

Discontinuous transitions in a current-carrying plasma

The properties of 'discontinuous' transitions in a current-carrying plasma are investigated by adopting an approach based on the two-fluid equations for a plasma. Braginskii's (1965) transport equations for a two-fluid plasma carrying a current are presented, and allowance is made for collisions with a background neutral gas as well as for effects of reflected particles. The speed of sound in a current-carrying plasma is derived so that the Mach number can be defined correctly as the ratio of the flow speed to the wave phase velocity in such a plasma. The various types of discontinuities permitted by the relevant jump relations in the absence of reflected particles are classified, the effect of reflected particles on such discontinuities is examined, and it is shown that the degree of indeterminacy of a discontinuity can be changed by the presence of reflected particles. Consideration of shocks containing a population of reflected particles and adiabatic transitions indicates that the pressure of reflected particles alone can give rise to both weak and strong transitions. The construction of discontinuous periodic flow solutions is also discussed.

Fuel consumption improvement in current transport engines

A review is conducted of improvements which can be made with respect to the fuel consumption of current engines and new production versions of current engines. A description is presented of an engine diagnostics program which has the objective to identify and quantify the causes and sources of performance deterioration in the JT9D turbofan engine and to develop basic data which will be applied to minimize performance degradation of current and future engines. General areas where performance losses occur are examined, taking into account seals, blades and vanes, and cases. Potential performance improvement concepts are related to improved component aerodynamics, improved flowpath sealing, blade tip clearance control, improved turbine cooling effectiveness, improved turbine materials and coatings, duct and nozzle aerodynamic refinements, nacelle aerodynamic refinements, forced exhaust mixers, advanced nacelle materials, and advanced fuel control.

High beta plasma in the dynamic Jovian current sheet

The equatorial current sheet, which Pioneer 10 repeatedly encountered on its outbound pass through the Jovian magnetosphere, frequently was associated with intense fluxes of energetic protons. Simultaneous observations of the changes in the energetic proton flux and in the magnetic-field magnitude demonstrate that the current sheet is embedded in a high-beta plasma in which high-energy (above 60 keV) ions frequently are the dominant constituents. Large differences in the plasma temperature and the thickness of this plasma sheet between encounters only 10 hours apart indicate that the Jovian plasma sheet is very dynamic on a time scale of hours. Occasional observations of significant temporal variations in the magnetic field and particle populations during periods within the plasma sheet may represent in situ observations of Jovian magnetic disturbances. Comparison with previous observations suggests that low-energy (not more than 5 keV) plasma contributes less than 3% to the current-sheet energy density.

Lightning current waveform measuring system

An apparatus is described for monitoring current waveforms produced by lightning strikes which generate currents in an elongated cable. These currents are converted to voltages and to light waves for being transmitted over an optical cable to a remote location. At the remote location, the waves are reconstructed back into electrical waves for being stored into a memory. The information is stored within the memory with a timing signal so that only different signals need be stored in order to reconstruct the wave form.

Cargo Logistics Airlift Systems Study (CLASS). Volume 1: Analysis of current air cargo system

The material presented in this volume is classified into the following sections; (1) analysis of current routes; (2) air eligibility criteria; (3) current direct support infrastructure; (4) comparative mode analysis; (5) political and economic factors; and (6) future potential market areas. An effort was made to keep the observations and findings relating to the current systems as objective as possible in order not to bias the analysis of future air cargo operations reported in Volume 3 of the CLASS final report.

A time dependent model of the Jovian current sheet

Analysis of vector helium magnetometer measurements during the Pioneer 10 outbound pass through the Jovian magnetosphere reveals that the average location of the near-equatorial current sheet is a surface whose shape is determined by the velocity at which the magnetic perturbations produced by a rotating tilted dipole propagate to large radial distances. A model is presented which is a surface encircling the planet and rotating rigidly with it. Based on a linear fit to the times of the current sheet crossings, a formula is derived for the surface representing the average position of the near-equatorial current sheet in the Jovian magnetosphere.

On the phase relationship between the energetic particle flux modulation and current disc penetrations in the Jovian magnetosphere - Pioneer 10 inbound

The surface defined by the locus of field minima along field lines for an unterminated Jovian model magnetosphere is found to coincide with the surface of the model current disk which provides a good fit to the data. However, when the model is terminated by means of magnetopause currents, preservation of the fit by modifying the current distribution near the outer edge of the disk causes the minimum absolute magnetic field surface to bifurcate. Energetic electron flux time profiles that are based upon such a minimum absolute magnetic field configuration are found to be qualitatively consistent with the inbound Pioneer 10 data.

Comparison of projected critical currents in PbMo6S8 and Nb3Ge

Critical current densities, Jc, of sputtered Chevrel phase PbMo6S8 films have been measured as a function of field to 19 T at several temperatures. The pinning forces were found to obey a scaling law. Assuming an effective upper critical field Bc2 = 45 T, an effective critical temperature Tc = 13 K, together with empirical estimates of numerical factors in the scaling law, the upper limits for critical current density Jc in PbMo6S8 are estimated. Comparisons are made with estimates of Jc for Nb3Ge at 4.2 K. A crossover of Jc vs. B is found for B of the order of 25 to 30 T. Below this point, Nb3Ge is projected to have a higher critical current density. Thus practical use of Chevrel materials in high field magnets only appears to be competitive with Nb3Ge for fields above 25 to 30 T.

On the relationship of the polar cap current system to the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field

The daily magnetic variation at the Resolute Bay polar cap station is examined for its dependence on the N-S component Bz of the IMF. The magnetic variations are found to be approximately in the same direction in the nightside polar cap for both northward and southward IMF, the amplitudes of the perturbations being larger for southward IMF. In the dayside, significant differences between the northward and southward IMF cases are observed. It is suggested that the overall pattern consists of two standard two-cell current patterns placed in juxtaposition such that the interface between them is the site of the antisunward current (sunward convection). Within the centers of each of these two patterns the currents are sunward (convection is antisunward).

Relationship between the growth of the ring current and the interplanetary quantity

Akasofu (1979) has reported that the interplanetary parameter epsilon correlates reasonably well with the magnetospheric substorm index AE; in the first approximation, epsilon represents the solar wind coupled to the magnetosphere. The correlation between the interplanetary parameter, the auroral electrojet index and the ring current index is examined for three magnetic storms. It is shown that when the interplanetary parameter exceeds the amount that can be dissipated by the ionosphere in terms of the Joule heat production, the excess energy is absorbed by the ring current belt, producing an abnormal growth of the ring current index.

Radial deformation of the solar current sheet as a cause of geomagnetic storms

It is suggested that the solar current sheet, extending from a coronal streamer, develops a large-scale radial deformation, at times with a very steep gradient at the earth's distance. The associated magnetic field lines (namely, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) lines) are expected to have also a large gradient in the vicinity of the current sheet. It is also suggested that some of the major geomagnetic storms occur when the earth is located in the region where IMF field lines have a large dip angle with respect to the ecliptic plane for an extended period (6-48 h), as a result of a steep radial deformation of the current sheet.

Modeling of switching regulator power stages with and without zero-inductor-current dwell time

State-space techniques are employed to derive accurate models for the three basic switching converter power stages: buck, boost, and buck/boost operating with and without zero-inductor-current dwell time. A generalized procedure is developed which treats the continuous-inductor-current mode without dwell time as a special case of the discontinuous-current mode when the dwell time vanishes. Abrupt changes of system behavior, including a reduction of the system order when the dwell time appears, are shown both analytically and experimentally. Merits resulting from the present modeling technique in comparison with existing modeling techniques are illustrated.

High-latitude field-aligned current sources and induced electric fields

Using a simple, planar model of the high latitude ionosphere with an enhanced conductivity auroral ring, the electric potential is computed for a pair of field-aligned current sheets inferred from observations. The relationship of various characteristics of the electric potential pattern to features of the field-aligned current distribution are elucidated in the context of a generalized field-aligned current Fourier analysis. On the basis of the analysis and observations to date, it is concluded that boundary layer dynamo action is the prevalent mechanism in the solar wind/magnetosphere/ionosphere interaction.
