Compact Solid-State High-Voltage Switch

Researchers at Sandia have developed a semiconductor-based high-voltage switch, with experimental results showing potential for enhanced radiation hardness, for use in multiple power conversion applications. Gallium nitride (GaN) metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) were modeled using commercial and Sandia CHARON simulation software to understand their performance and for future prediction of device operation in radiation environments.

MicroResonators for Compacts Optical Sensors (μRCOS)

As the demand for continuous, in-situ surveillance of health of systems and environments rapidly increases, miniaturized sensors with fast responses are sought. Optical dielectric resonators supporting Whispering Gallery Modes (WGMs) have exceptional properties, like very high-power density, very narrow spectral linewidth, and extremely small mode volume. As the footprint of these sensors is drastically reduced, measurements of microvolumes samples with dramatic reduction in analysis time are possible, enabling large numbers of parallel analyses using microarrays. The high sensitivity and speed of WGM resonators combined with the ability to detect molecules in their native state have great future potential for basic and applied research such as reliable single molecule, trace-gas detection, environmental monitoring, chemical threat sensing, and biodefense Such appealing peculiarities motivated us developing WMG resonators (WGMRs) for Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy (CEAS) for chem-bio detection. Specifically, we designed and batch-fabricated microspheres and fiber tapers for resonances excitation. We successfully detected gases (N 2 and CO 2 ) in customized environmental chambers, and bio-organisms (Inf. A and E. Coli) with integrated microfluidic systems. Background calibration and environmental isolation were always accounted for in proving the performances.

Wall plug efficiency analysis of a compact SRF industrial accelerator [Poster]

Superconducting radiofrequency cavities offer extremely high (>90%) RF-to-beam energy conversion efficiency. Recent breakthroughs in the Nb 3 Sn SRF cavity technology, successful demonstration of the conduction cooling technique, and the availability of high cooling capacity cryocoolers has made possible the use of SRF for industrial particle accelerators. However, the overall wall plug-to-beam efficiency of such an SRF accelerator can be limited by the wall plug-to-RF power efficiency of the RF source powering this accelerator. The present study quantifies the wall plug-to-beam efficiency of a conduction-cooled SRF accelerator considering several different choices of the RF power source. The study concludes that the wall plug efficiency of the accelerator is indeed limited by that of the power source.

First-principles Search for Compact Optical Materials [Slides]

Optoelectronics can increase speed and efficiency of information technology. There is a need to miniaturize components below the difrraction limit. Computational pre-screening increases the speed of materials discovery. Factors that must be accounting for beyond raw performance are material stability, cost, and environmental impact.

Ultra-compact Imaging Technology (CRADA Final Report)

As part of the Cyclotron Road program, Synopic (formerly FlatCam LLC) sought to investigate the benefits of its depth-sensitive imaging techniques. The basic principle involved using a thin mask specially designed to encode light reaching a sensor, in conjunction with optimized computational algorithms, in such a manner that allowed for both miniaturization of imaging systems and improved computation toward high resolution, three-dimensional imaging. By thoroughly exploring the resolution, mask/optical design, and algorithmic capabilities of our depth sensitive technology, we expand the potential applications for (but not limited to) medical, consumer and industrial purposes. The project aimed to develop new imaging systems by building on previous work and using 1) materials capable of modulating and 2) sensors capable of measuring visible and longer wavelengths. Preliminary research was conducted to design, fabricate and characterize imaging systems with the goal of improving resolution, enhancing single capture, three-dimensional imaging, and extending depth of field of captured images. The primary goal was to determine whether adapting the depth-sensitive imaging system is feasible, and early results are promising.
