A Compact Monolithic Electro-Optic Package for Quantum Microwave-to-Optical Transduction

We present a novel quantum transduction package that integrates a macroscopic electro-optic crystal into a compact, monolithic assembly designed for superconducting quantum processors. The device provides an efficient and scalable interface between microwave and optical domains while preserving cryogenic compatibility. We performed full-wave and quantum dynamical simulations to assess the performance of the hybrid system, focusing on the interaction between a transmon-based microwave cavity and the crystal’s and cavity low-frequency microwave mode. The transmon operates both as an ancilla for the QPU and as a nonlinear element enabling four-wave mixing between cavity and electro-optic crystal microwave fields. Our results indicate that this architecture can coherently mediate quantum information transfer from the cavity to the electro-optic mode, offering a promising platform for on-chip quantum transduction within superconducting quantum networks.

Self-aligning swaging punch and method for swaging

A self-aligning swaging punch is provided for adjoining together a pin and a workpiece having a pinhole. The swaging punch comprises a shaft and a tip having an open-ended cavity. The shaft transfers an axial force from a press or hammer to the tip. The tip transfers the axial force from the shaft to a top surface of the workpiece near the pinhole. The tip may be spherical in shape for evenly deforming the workpiece near the upper edge of the pinhole. The open-ended cavity receives the pin therein and allows the pin to extend at least partially into the open-ended cavity while the tip contacts the workpiece. The open-ended cavity also ensures that the swaging punch is aligned with the pinhole and perpendicular to the surface of the workpiece when the pin is inserted into the pinhole such that the workpiece evenly deforms and presses against the pin.

Plasma Processing for In-Situ Field Emission Mitigation of Superconducting Radiofrequency (SRF) Cryomodules

Field emission (FE) is one of the main limiting factors of superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities operating in accelerators and it occurs whenever contaminants, like dust, metal flakes or even absorbates, are present on the surface of the cavity high electric field region. Field emission reduces the maximum achievable accelerating field and generates free electrons that may interact with the beam, damage or activate the beamline. One practical method that can be used to mitigate this problem is in-situ plasma cleaning, or plasma processing. The development of a processing that can be applied in-situ is extremely advantageous, since it enables the recovery of the cryomodule performance without the need of disassembling the whole cryomodule, which is an extremely expensive and time-consuming process. On the other hand, plasma processing only requires the cryomodule warm-up to room-temperature and the subsequent processing of the contaminated cavities. The entire process is reasonably quick and involves a limited number of personnel. For these reasons we would like to advocate for continuing to invest in the R&D of plasma processing to optimize its applicability in cryomodules and for extending the technique to other frequency ranges and cavities geometries.

On the Phase Grouping Mechanism for a Magnetron Coherent Oscillation

CW magnetrons, developed for industrial heaters, but driven by an injection-locking signal were suggested to power Superconducting RF (SRF) cavities due to higher efficiency and lower cost of generated RF power per Watt than traditionally used RF sources (klystrons, IOTs, solid-state amplifiers). When the magnetrons are intended to feed Room Temperature (RT) cavities, the injected phase or frequency locking signal may provide required phase or frequency stability of the accelerating field. However, when the magnetron RF sources are intended to feed high Q-factor SRF cavities, the sources must be controlled in phase and power in a wide bandwidth to compensate parasitic phase and amplitude modulations caused by microphonics. In dependence on parameters of magnetron and the injection-locking signal one can choose regime most suitable for feeding SRF cavities, enabling magnetron almost coherent oscillation at the wide bandwidth of control. A novel approach considering magnetrons as quasi-coherent or coherent RF generators enables choosing the tube parameters and operation most suitable for various SRF accelerators.

AMR Magnetic Sensors in Flux Expulsion Studies

Magnetic flux expulsion properties of the superconducting material such as bulk niobium, widely used for the radio-frequency cavity fabrication, substantially affect the performance characteristics of the cavities. The quality factor of the SRF resonators can be significantly compromised due to the presence of the trapped flux vortices causing additional RF energy losses in the material. Large number of experiments have been carried out by different research groups to establish the correlation of the flux trapping in niobium cavities with the presence of impurities in niobium as well as various surface treatment methods. Majority of these experiments utilize commercially available cryogenic fluxgate magnetic sensors to measure the field before and after the niobium transition to the superconducting state to quantify the amount of flux trapped. One disadvantage of the typically used fluxgates is the size of the sensing volume. As an example, the Barting-ton F and G type cryogenic fluxgates have a sensing core length of about 30mm, which is comparable to the curvature radius of the cavity walls and hence the magnetic field lines curvature radius after the expulsion. Thus, the measured field value needs to be corrected to account for the sensor effective averaging over the sensing volume. In case of the sharper geometries, for instance if the flux expulsion to be measured on the edge of the rectangular niobium flat sheet with a thickness of ~5mm, the use of the fluxgate would be impractical.

Demonstration of Niobium Tin in 218 MHz Low-beta Quarter Wave Accelerator C

A 218 MHz quarter wave niobium cavity has been fabricated for the purpose of demonstrating Nb3Sn technology on a low-beta accelerator cavity. Niobium-tin has been established as a promising next generation SRF material, but development has focused primarily in high- beta elliptical cell cavities. This material has a significantly higher TC than niobium, allowing for design of higher frequency quarter wave cavities (that are subsequently smaller) as well as for significantly lowered cooling requirements (possibly leading to cryocooler based designs). The fabrication, initial cold testing, and Nb3Sn coating are discussed as well as test plans and details of future applications.

Exploration of Parameters That Affect High Field Q-Slope

The onset of high field Q-slope (HFQS) around 25 MV/m prevents cavities in electropolished (EP) condition from reaching high quality factors at high gradients due to the precipitation of niobium hydrides during cooldown. These hydrides are non-superconducting at 2 K, and contribute to losses such as Q disease and HFQS. We are interested in exploring the parameters that affect the behavior of HFQS. We study a high RRR cavity that received an 800 C by 3 hour bake and EP treatment to observe HFQS. First, we explore the effect of trapped magnetic flux. The cavity is tested after cooling slowly through Tc while applying various levels of ambient field. We observe the onset of the HFQS and correlate this behavior with the amount of trapped flux. Next, we investigate the effect of the size/concentration of hydrides. The cavity is tested after holding the temperature at 100 K for 12 hours during the cooldown to promote the growth of hydrides. We can correlate the behavior of the HF QS with the increased hydride concentration. Our results will help further the understanding of the mechanism of HFQS.

Decoherence Noise on the Superconducting Qubits Training Program

Quantum computing is a growing field with promising applications in a variety of fields such as healthcare, energy consumption, and cryptography. Quantum computing leverages the principles of quantum mechanics - superposition and entanglement. Yet, in the Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) Era - quantum systems face the major challenge of decoherence due to noise. This era is characterized by low amounts of qubits and high gate error. Decoherence leads to the loss of the quantum information stored in the qubit. Noise occurs with any quantum system that is exposed to the environment. It should also be noted that quantum information can be stored in the cavity - Fermilab specializes in coupling transmons to ultrahigh-Q SRF cavities. The Superconducting Qubits Training Program (SQTP) provides a visualization for beginners in quantum computing. The open quantum system simulated is a superconducting qubit (two-level atom) coupled to a microwave cavity whose excitations are photons. The Rotating Wave Approximation of the Jaynes-Cumming Hamiltonian is used. SQTP utilizes open-source Python-based libraries scQubits, NumPy, and QuTiP alongside the Master Lindblad equation. In this project, we study the different decay behaviors of qubits and cavities with collapse operators.
