CalWave - Open Water Demonstration - System and Component Overview Content Models and Drawings

Data for the CalWave - Open Water Demonstration, a submerged pressure differential Wave Energy Converter (WEC) Device. Device is moored to the seabed, and the motion of the waves causes the sea level to rise and fall above the device, inducing a pressure differential in the device. The alternating pressure pumps fluid through a system to generate electricity, which is transmitted to shore via bidirectional cables. Documentation and data here includes: System Overview Content Model and Drawings as well as Component Overview Content Model and Drawings.

Niowave Design and Analysis of a 200 kW Converter

LANL is providing support to Niowave Inc. on the design and analysis of a 200 kW converter. The current design of the 200 kW (40 MeV, 5 mA electron beam) converter consists of LBE flowing from the top to the bottom. When compared to the Mk.5 20 kW converter, which flowed LBE from the bottom, flowing over a divider plate to create a waterfall, the 200 kW converter eliminates the divider plate, which would otherwise have melted with the higher beam power. Because the LBE flows from the top to the bottom, alternate methods to the divider plate need to be utilized to ensure a stable flow that minimizes splashing at the bottom of the LBE waterfall, while maintaining a uniform LBE thickness at the beam, and steady LBE flow at the desired flow rate.

Microwave-enhanced catalytic ammonia synthesis under moderate pressure and temperature

In this study, an alternative approach based on microwave-enhanced ammonia synthesis for Haber-Bosch process was carried out under moderate pressure of 0.1–0.65 MPa and temperature range of 280–400 °C over a stable CsRu/CeO 2 catalyst. The ammonia production rate is significantly improved under microwave conditions. At 0.65 MPa and 320 °C, maximum ammonia production rate was achieved at H 2 /N 2 ratio of 1/1. Stable performance was obtained in a 6-cycles of startup-shutdown operation for cumulative on-line time of 80 h. The work demonstrates the potential of microwave catalytic technology for the distributed ammonia synthesis using renewable power having intermittent nature of energy supply.

Chemical looping based ammonia production - A promising pathway for production of the noncarbon fuel

Ammonia, primarily made with Haber–Bosch process developed in 1909 and winning two Nobel prizes, is a promising noncarbon fuel for preventing global warming of 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. However, the undesired characteristics of the process, including high carbon footprint, necessitate alternative ammonia synthesis methods, and among them is chemical looping ammonia production (CLAP) that uses nitrogen carrier materials and operates at atmospheric pressure with high product selectivity and energy efficiency. To date, neither a systematic review nor a perspective in nitrogen carriers and CLAP has been reported in the critical area. So, this work not only assesses the previous results of CLAP but also provides perspectives towards the future of CLAP. It classifies, characterizes, and holistically analyzes the fundamentally different CLAP pathways and discusses the ways of further improving the CLAP performance with the assistance of plasma technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

Geologic hydrogen: a review of resource potential, subsurface dynamics, exploration, production, transportation, and research opportunities

Hydrogen is a versatile resource with critical roles in decarbonization, industrial manufacturing, and energy integration. However, most hydrogen today is produced from fossil fuels, resulting in high emissions and energy consumption. Although low-carbon hydrogen production methods, such as steam methane reforming with carbon capture and renewable-powered electrolysis, are advancing, their high costs hinder large-scale deployment. Identifying alternative pathways for producing low-cost, low-emission hydrogen is therefore essential. Geologic hydrogen, referring to natural and stimulated hydrogen generated in the Earth's subsurface, has attracted growing attention as a potential source of sustainable, economically viable, and environmentally favorable hydrogen. This paper provides a comprehensive review of geologic hydrogen, covering its resource potential, origins, migration and trapping mechanisms, exploration techniques, production strategies, and pipeline transportation. It also identifies key knowledge gaps and proposes a roadmap for future research. The review indicates that geologic hydrogen has vast resource potential and can leverage existing subsurface technologies and geophysical exploration methods. However, major challenges persist, including uncertain hydrogen generation rates, limited understanding and control of serpentinization processes, costly transportation infrastructure, the lack of validated techno-economic analysis, and potential social and environmental issues. As the field is still in its early stages, progress will require interdisciplinary collaboration spanning geoscience, engineering, economics, environmental science, and policy and regulation.

A Science Gateway for the Repeatable Analysis of Machine Learning Predicted Gravity Anomalies

In recent years, deep learning has become an increasingly popular alternative for modeling in geoscience applications due to its scalability and efficiency. However, the interpretability, compute, data volume, and hyperparameter tuning requirements of deep learning models make development and monitoring difficult. Furthermore, model explainability and communicating results obtained by these models to users or domain experts is a challenge, as domain experts in geoscience also need to have a deep understanding of how those models function in order to support their scientific works. Here, we describe a science gateway and machine learning pipeline for predicting gravity anomalies from geophysical data. The gateway, built on open-source technologies, provides a holistic view of the pipeline through interactive visualizations aimed at enabling efficient exploratory data analysis. The repeatability, reproducibility, and monitoring capabilities of this overall system allow us to iterate and analyze at scale. Using this pipeline and gateway, we can repeatedly produce accurate high-resolution gravity anomaly datasets. By describing the underlying technologies, implementation, and results, here we provide a foundation for the broader adoption of science gateways into cross-cutting geoscience and machine learning research projects as a means to improve the scientific discovery and collaboration in the geophysics and computational sciences community.

Investigation of oxygen ion mobility through Zr x Ta 2 O 2x+5 (ZTOx) and Hf 6 Ta 2 O 17 (HTO) at elevated temperatures

Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) allow for technology to withstand high heat, which is especially critical for aerospace applications. As technology advances, better TPS are required to keep up with more extreme operating temperatures. Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics (UHTCs) are of interest because of their high melting points above 3000°C, but they suffer from oxidation when exposed to the atmosphere. A standard remedy to prevent oxidation is the use an oxide coating to shield from oxygen in the atmosphere while still allowing high operating temperatures and thermal cycling. However, standard oxide coatings such as yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) have limited operating temperatures before they allow oxygen to diffuse into the substrate material. A recently proposed alternative material has the formula A 6 B 2 O 17 (A: Zr or Hf) (B: Ta or Nb). In this study, determination of the oxygen protection ability of Hf 6 Ta 2 O 17 (HTO), Zr 6 Ta 2 O 17 (ZTO6), and various Zr x Ta 2 O 2x+5 (ZTOx) was determined using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Optimal synthesis and sintering conditions were determined for ZTO6 and several of its ZTO variations. Activation energy for oxygen mobility was also determined. The importance of ball milling was found to be crucial to achieve high sintering density with these ceramics. The sintering study revealed that the ideal temperature of the ZTO variations increased with increased Zr/Ta ratio in the formulation. It was determined that both HTO and the ZTO variations conduct oxygen ions less than current ceramic coatings such as YSZ, with HTO conducting the least, with results confirming the validity of both HTO and ZTO materials as candidates for TPS coatings based on their low oxygen ion conductivity.
