In Situ Synthesis of Phosphate-Based CelloMOF as a Promising Separator for Li–Ion Batteries

Nowadays, battery separators play a critical role in determining the sustainability, electrochemical efficiency, and safety of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this contribution, we developed fire-resistant composite membranes called CelloMOF by in situ grafting of metal-organic framework, ZIF-67, onto phosphorylated cellulose nanofibers (P-CNFs) followed by a vacuum filtration process akin to papermaking. The hybrid ZIF-67@P-CNF membrane exhibits superior properties than a polyolefin-based commercial separator (CS) in terms of enhanced thermal and dimensional stability, flame-retardant properties, better surface wettability, and improved electrolyte uptake. Thermal dimensional stability tests revealed that the ZIF-67@P-CNF separator maintained its structure even at 200 °C, whereas CS suffered severe shrinkage, potentially leading to internal short circuits. Combustion tests showed a peak heat release rate (PHRR) of 34.5 W/g and a total heat release (THR) of 1.61 kJ/g for ZIF-67@P-CNF, significantly lower than the PHRR (1111.82 W/g) and THR (40.89 kJ/g) of CS. The composite separator also demonstrated significantly improved wettability, with a contact angle of 32 ± 1.04°, compared to 92 ± 1.07° for CS, highlighting its hydrophilic nature. Electrochemical evaluations in LiFePO 4 /Li half-cells indicated a higher discharge capacity of 149 mA h g -1 at 0.2 C and superior capacity retention of 86% after 50 cycles, outperforming CS (145 mA h g -1 and 84%, respectively). In conclusion, these results underscore the potential of the ZIF-67@P-CNF membrane to advance safe, high-performance LIBs by addressing critical challenges in thermal stability, flame retardancy, and electrolyte compatibility.

Type-I CdS/ZnS Core/Shell Quantum Dot-Gold Heterostructural Nanocrystals for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

Developing Type-I core/shell quantum dots is of great importance toward fabricating stable and sustainable photocatalysts. However, the application of Type-I systems has been limited due to the strongly confined photogenerated charges by the energy barrier originating from the wide-bandgap shell material. In this project, we found that through the decoration of Au satellite-type domains on the surface of Type-I CdS/ZnS core/shell quantum dots, such an energy barrier can be effectively overcome and an over 400-fold enhancement of photocatalytic H(2) evolution rate was achieved compared to bare CdS/ZnS quantum dots. Transient absorption spectroscopic studies indicated that the charges can be effectively extracted and subsequently transferred to surrounding molecular substrates in a subpicosecond time scale in such hybrid nanocrystals. Based on density functional theory calculations, the ultrafast charge separation rates were ascribed to the formation of intermediate Au2S layer at the semiconductor-metal interface, which can successfully offset the energy confinement introduced by the ZnS shell. In conclusion, our findings not only provide insightful understandings on charge carrier dynamics in semiconductor-metal heterostructural materials but also pave the way for the future design of quantum dot-based hybrid photocatalytic systems.

Synergistic effects of mixing and strain in high entropy spinel oxides for oxygen evolution reaction

Developing stable and efficient electrocatalysts is vital for boosting oxygen evolution reaction (OER) rates in sustainable hydrogen production. High-entropy oxides (HEOs) consist of five or more metal cations, providing opportunities to tune their catalytic properties toward high OER efficiency. This work combines theoretical and experimental studies to scrutinize the OER activity and stability for spinel-type HEOs. Density functional theory confirms that randomly mixed metal sites show thermodynamic stability, with intermediate adsorption energies displaying wider distributions due to mixing-induced equatorial strain in active metal-oxygen bonds. The rapid sol-flame method is employed to synthesize HEO, comprising five 3d-transition metal cations, which exhibits superior OER activity and durability under alkaline conditions, outperforming lower-entropy oxides, even with partial surface oxidations. The study highlights that the enhanced activity of HEO is primarily attributed to the mixing of multiple elements, leading to strain effects near the active site, as well as surface composition and coverage.

A biomass pretreatment using cellulose-derived solvent Cyrene

Despite only recently becoming available in the quantities required for solvent usage, the cellulose-derived solvent, named Cyrene, has gained significant attention in green chemistry in recent years. To fulfill the sustainability criteria of future biorefineries, a novel renewable biomass pretreatment using Cyrene and water was developed for the first time. Results showed that Cyrene has high potential as a green pretreatment solvent in terms of lignin fractionation/recovery and sugar release in the follow-up enzymatic hydrolysis. The mechanism of this pretreatment was revealed by investigating the structural characteristics of pretreated biomass, and the recovered lignin was also fully characterized to assess its valorization potential. Results indicated that Cyrene pretreatment could be performed at a mild condition (120 °C) to reduce the lignin condensation and the cleavage of β-O-4 linkages without compromising lignin removal and the following sugar platform. The successful utilization of this cellulose-derived solvent in pretreatment will further contribute to the realization of a “closed-loop” biorefinery process.

Electron transport barrier and high confinement in configurations with internal islands close to the plasma edge of W7-X

The low magnetic shear in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator makes it feasible to shape the separatrix by the large islands constituting an island-divertor, and this can be exploited to access various magnetic configurations, including samples of different internal island sizes and locations. To investigate the configuration effects on the plasma confinement, a configuration scan was performed by changing the coil currents to vary the rotational transform between values 5/4 and 5/6 at the plasma boundary with different power levels (2, 4, 6 MW) of electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) at a maximum plasma density of 8 × 10 19 m -2 . neutral beam injection (NBI) heating was also applied during some configurations of the scan to create a density ramp and access high densities beyond the X2 ECRH cutoff. For the magnetic configurations, where the 5/5 and 5/6 island chains were moved closer to separatrix but remaining inside the last closed flux surface, the electron cyclotron emission shows that an electron temperature, T e , pedestal develops already during ECRH heated plasma buildup phase indicating a transport barrier, and the barrier sustains irrespective of changed plasma heating conditions such as NBI in the later part of discharge. The transport barrier is broken by subsequent fast crashes, observed with multiple plasma diagnostics with characteristics such as tokamak edge localized modes, and the corresponding crash amplitude and frequency vary with plasma pressure. The impact of the transport barrier on plasma confinement can be seen through the increased core T e profile, which could be responsible for the overall increase in the stored diamagnetic energy by approximately 10% for these configurations. After the plasma heating is terminated, a backwards transition to a degraded confinement state is also observed. These observations indicate a configuration triggered high confinement mode in low shear W7-X. This work focuses on the occurrence of this transport barrier for different magnetic configurations and its relation to internal magnetic islands.

A Sorghum F-Box Protein Induces an Oxidative Burst in the Defense Against Colletotrichum sublineola

The hemibiotrophic fungal pathogen Colletotrichum sublineola is the causal agent of anthracnose in sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor), resulting in leaf blight, stalk rot, and head blight in susceptible genotypes, with yield losses of up to 50%. The development of anthracnose-resistant cultivars can reduce reliance on fungicides and provide a more sustainable and economical means for disease management. A previous genome-wide association study of the sorghum association panel identified the candidate resistance gene Sobic.005G172300 encoding an F-box protein. To better understand the role of this gene in the defense against C. sublineola, gene expression following infection with C. sublineola was monitored by RNA sequencing in seedlings of sorghum accession SC110, which harbored the resistance allele, and three accessions that harbored a susceptible allele. Only in SC110 did the expression of Sobic.005G172300 increase during the biotrophic phase of infection. Subsequent transcriptome analysis, gene co-expression networks, and gene regulatory networks of inoculated and mock-inoculated seedlings of resistant and susceptible accessions suggest that the increase in expression of Sobic.005G172300 induces an oxidative burst by lowering the concentration of ascorbic acid during the biotrophic phase of infection. Based on gene regulatory network analysis, the protein encoded by Sobic.005G172300 is proposed to target proteins involved in the biosynthesis of ascorbic acid for polyubiquitination through the SCF E3 ubiquitin ligase, causing their degradation via the proteasome.

A Digital Twin Framework for Liquid-cooled Supercomputers as Demonstrated at Exascale

We present ExaDigiT, an open-source framework for developing comprehensive digital twins of liquid-cooled supercomputers. It integrates three main modules: (1) a resource allocator and power simulator, (2) a transient thermo-fluidic cooling model, and (3) an augmented reality model of the supercomputer and central energy plant. The framework enables the study of "what-if" scenarios, system optimizations, and virtual prototyping of future systems. Using Frontier as a case study, we demonstrate the framework's capabilities by replaying six months of system telemetry for systematic verification and validation. Such a comprehensive analysis of a liquid-cooled exascale supercomputer is the first of its kind. ExaDigiT elucidates complex transient cooling system dynamics, runs synthetic or real workloads, and predicts energy losses due to rectification and voltage conversion. Throughout our paper, we present lessons learned to benefit HPC practitioners developing similar digital twins. We envision the digital twin will be a key enabler for sustainable, energy-efficient supercomputing.

SCHOTT laser glass [Invited]

Laser glass is a highly engineered optical material that enables the amplification of light in laser systems. It is known for being the heart of the largest laser facilities ever built, where thousands of neodymium-doped meter-sized slabs of laser glass create intense beams of near-infrared laser radiation used to study fusion reactions. Or if doped with ytterbium and erbium, laser glass can be made into millimeter-sized components empowering range-finders and dermatological lasers. Decades of development have poised laser glass for the next challenge on the horizon: amplifying light for sustainable inertial fusion energy power plants.

Microwave Plasma Flash Pyrolysis for Coal-to-Product Applications

Since 2010, the US coal industry has experienced a precipitous decline, with coal production volumes dropping by as much as 35% according to EIA. This decline is hardly surprising given that 90% of domestic coal use is allocated to electricity production: While coal generation supplied about 45% of the nation's power in 2010, its share is projected to fall to only 22% in 2020. Fortunately, alternative uses for coal as a feedstock rather than as energy source are available. Coal tar is an established feedstock for chemicals and high-value carbon products including carbon fiber and battery-grade graphites. At present, growth of these uses is constrained by the low availability, purity, and yields of currently available coal liquids, and high energy- and CO2-intensity of current methods of production (i.e. coking). Previously reported work conducted in a partnership with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory demonstrated technical and economic viability of flash pyrolysis of coal in a microwave plasma environment at bench scales targeting production of fuel feedstocks (synthetic oil). H Quest’s work since then indicated promise of microwave-derived coal liquids to be uniquely suited for the lower-cost production of carbon materials, including synthetic graphite, carbon fiber, and composites. Low bulk process temperatures, subsecond residence times, and ambient pressure operation enable small-scale deployment, reduce capital and operating costs, and suppress formation of impurities, including QI material, typical in conventional coal tars. With no inherent production of CO2 or water consumption, microwave plasma flash pyrolysis presents a viable route to the sustainable production of both platform chemicals and carbon-based materials. Most recently, H Quest developed a novel, ruggedized microwave plasma reactor, which departs from the proof-of-concept approach and addresses the problems typically encountered in scaling laboratory microwave plasma apparata (e.g. eliminating fragile quartz enclosures prone to coking and fouling). This reactor has been integrated with a 15kW microwave power supply, a pulverized coal injection system, and a product recovery system. A series of screening tests across a range of coals (including hv-, lv-bituminous and subbituminous PRB), entrainment gas flows and compositions and microwave energy inputs are performed to evaluate conversion rates within the novel, scaled-up system, confirm yields of liquid products, and to perform compositional (GC/MS and elemental) analyses of the products. Results of these tests will be presented and discussed.

Environmentally Assisted Fatigue in Light Water Reactor Environment

This report summarizes the Environmentally Assisted Fatigue (EAF) research conducted at ANL under the US DOE Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) program. Starting from a rich background in theoretical and experimental EAF, ANL previously developed an approach to evaluate fatigue performance of reactor materials in light water reactor environments with the correction factor F en . The approach was based on a large body of experimental work performed at ANL and elsewhere, and was consistent with American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)’s methodology governing the design and construction of reactor components. In recent years, the program was focused on component fatigue prediction and made several major and fundamental contributions in this area. These accomplishments help meet the needs identified by the industry concerning component level fatigue predictions in complex, transient conditions. The main contribution of the ANL program involved the development of a system-level model for estimating residual strain and life of nuclear reactor coolant system components under connected-system-thermal-mechanical boundary conditions. The goal was to predict the stress hotspots, strain residuals, strain amplitudes and the resulting fatigue lives. Thermal-mechanical stress analysis was performed considering thermal stratification and a design-basis reactor loading cycle. Based on the finite element (FE) model results, the strain residuals, strain amplitudes and resulting fatigue lives of reactor coolant system (RCS) components were predicted. The results show that some of the RCS components can have significantly different strain amplitudes, residual strain, and fatigue lives, despite having similar geometry and material. In addition, the simulated component-level strain profile can guide the selection of appropriate test inputs for conducting laboratory-scale EAF tests. Building upon the system-level model, ANL developed a digital twin (DT) framework to predict the structural states and associated fatigue life of components in real-time. This framework is a comprehensive system designed to predict the structural states and fatigue lives of reactor components. It includes multiple models and integrates artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and FE based modeling tools to evaluate the structural states and fatigue lives.

Improved Microalgal Carbon Utilization Efficiency via Integrated CO 2 Electro-Conversion to Formate and Microalgal Sequestration

This project developed a process to convert industrial carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions into high-value, sustainable products through genetically engineered algae cultivation. While traditional microalgae cultivation depends on sparging CO 2 gas through water, this method is often inefficient because much of the gas escapes into the atmosphere before the algae can consume it. To overcome this challenge, the project designed an integrated system that first uses a CO 2 to formic acid electrolyzer to convert CO 2 into water-soluble formic acid/formate, then introduces formic acid/formate into the algae pond for cultivation, which allows the algae to access and utilize nearly all of the provided carbon, greatly increasing the efficiency of carbon utilization. The project team has successfully scaled up the CO 2 to formic acid electrolyzer from lab-scale to 1000 cm² and demonstrated industrially relevant current densities with the scaled-up electrolyzers using a CO 2 source that simulates industrial CO 2 waste.

Reexamining Fat: Exploring Diversity, Plasticity, Development, Functional Implication, and Therapeutic Options

Obesity has become so prevalent in many developed countries that it is increasingly perceived as a new norm, despite decades of interventions and drug development. Although research continues to explore novel strategies, no single approach to date has demonstrated sustained success in reducing its population-level dominance. This underscores the need to better evaluate and integrate the growing body of knowledge surrounding obesity’s multifaceted nature. Stamped under one ‘fat’ name, adipose tissue varies by color, location, morphology, composition, and function. This variability suggests a level of complexity that demands deeper investigation. Although the relevance and roles of different adipose types have been extensively discussed throughout the literature, their interdependence, synergy, and collective impact on the body remain to be fully expounded. This review aims to further consolidate and elucidate the available information on the different adipose tissue types and their association with obesity and metabolic health. We also discuss existing and emerging therapeutic strategies, highlighting their respective strengths and limitations.
