Extending the Remote Control Capabilities in the CMS Detector Control System with Remote Procedure Call Services

The CMS Detector Control System (DCS) is implemented as a large distributed and redundant system, with applications interacting and sharing data in multiple ways. The CMS XML-RPC is a software toolkit implementing the standard Remote Procedure Call (RPC) protocol, using the Extensible Mark-up Language (XML) and a custom lightweight variant using the JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) to model, encode and expose resources through the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). The CMS XML-RPC toolkit complies with the standard specification of the XML-RPC protocol that allows system developers to build collaborative software architectures with self-contained and reusable logic, and with encapsulation of well-defined processes. The implementation of this protocol introduces not only a powerful communication method to operate and exchange data with web-based applications, but also a new programming paradigm to design service-oriented software architectures within the CMS DCS domain. This paper presents details of the CMS XML-RPC implementation in WinCC Open Architecture (OA) Control Language using an object-oriented approach.

Lighting and Power Upgrade Recommendations for U.S. National Park Service Caribbean Units

The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) maintains and operates numerous park units along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, extending into the Caribbean to Commonwealth territories like Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI). Several of these units were in the direct path of hurricanes Irma and Maria during the 2017 hurricane season and suffered considerable damage, including power outages, structural damage, and destroyed equipment. In February 2018, a task force deployed to three locations in the Caribbean to assess hurricane damage to the existing lighting systems and energy infrastructure. The primary objective was providing related recommendations for resiliency upgrades to the lighting and electrical supply systems, with special added emphasis on the numerous goals, objectives, and requirements of the NPS (such as protecting night skies, wildlife, wilderness character, cultural resources, etc.). Numerous opportunities exist for simultaneously increasing resiliency and preserving natural environments within these sensitive locations, and technological approaches that work in the extreme conditions encountered here should readily translate to many other less complex sites across the greater park system. Ultimately, care and attention to detail in implementation are the most important underlying requirements for success across the myriad needs likely encountered at these sites, once commitment to resolving them has been secured.

National Weather Service Radiosonde Evaluation Field Campaign Report

The purpose of the campaign was to perform a full evaluation of participating vendor’s radiosondes to qualify for potential use in the National Weather Service (NWS) upper air field operations. The NWS has specific requirements that vendors systems were evaluated against to determine if the vendor’s radiosonde performs within specifications. For this evaluation, the NWS was pursuing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) ground/tracking systems in the 403 MHz frequency band over the previously used Telemetry Receiving System (TRS) and house-built software using the 1680 MHz frequency. The U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s Southern Great Plains (SGP) observatory served as the warm and dry test region. The radiosondes were assessed for precision of the radiosonde (unit under test versus itself) and accuracy of the radiosonde’s humidity measurements (unit under test versus a cryogenic frostpoint hygrometer [CFH]).

Unification of Monitoring in the Fermi File Transfer Service

Written in Python, the Fermi File Transfer Service (FTS) is a sitewide program used by Fermilab to safely transfer files to storage. With the scale of FTS, monitoring its status has become increasingly important. By using Kafka-Python, FNAL Landscape, and Elasticsearch, the project's goal is to provide enhanced remote monitoring to compliment FTS's pre-existing monitoring. This will enable new ways to visually graph and interpret logs in a non-local environment. The associated poster briefly describes the changes made, details about Elasticsearch, and illustrates the monitoring data received thus far.

Performance Validation of Pulsed Thermal Imaging System for In-Service Applications

Additive manufacturing (AM) is an emerging method for cost-efficient fabrication of complex topology nuclear reactor parts from high-strength corrosion resistance alloys, such as stainless steel and Inconel. AM of metallic structures for nuclear energy applications is currently based on laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process, which has the capability of melting metallic powder and net shaping the structures with relatively high precision. Some of the challenges with using LPBF method for nuclear manufacturing include the possibility of introducing pores into metallic structures. Integrity of AM structures needs to be evaluated nondestructively because material flaws could lead to premature failures in high temperature nuclear reactor environment. Currently, there exist limited capabilities to evaluate actual AM structures non-destructively. Pulsed Thermography Imaging (PTI) provides a capability for non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of subsurface defects in arbitrary size structures. The PTI method is based on recording material surface temperature transients with infrared (IR) camera following thermal pulse delivered on material surface with flash light. The PTI method has advantages for NDE of actual AM structures because the method involves one-sided non-contact measurements and fast processing of large sample areas captured in one image. Following initial qualification of an AM component for deployment in a nuclear reactor, a PTI system can also be used for in-service nondestructive evaluation (NDE) applications. In this report, we describe recent progress in enhancing PTI capabilities in detecting microscopic defects in metallic specimens. SS316 and IN718 specimens were developed with a pattern of subsurface calibrated flat bottom hole (FBH) defects with diameters from 500µm to 200µm. FBH’s were created with EDM (electron discharge machining) drill. PTI imaging data was processed Spatial Temporal Denoised Thermal Source Separation (STDTSS) unsupervised machine learning (ML) algorithm. We show that defects as small as 200µm in SS316 and IN718 can be detected with STDTSS algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, these are the smallest detected defects which are reported in literature.

Variable Renewable Energy Participation in U.S. Ancillary Services Markets: Economic Evaluation and Key Issues

Variable renewable energy (VRE) is not yet meaningfully participating in U.S. ancillary services (AS) markets. VRE participation in AS markets could provide a new source of revenues for VRE resource owners to offset declining energy and capacity values and a new tool for power system operators to address emerging system constraints. This paper uses a price-taker dispatch model and historical prices to estimate the economic value of standalone and hybrid (battery-paired) VRE participation in AS markets, from resource owner and electricity system perspectives, in each of the seven U.S. independent system operator and regional transmission organization (ISO/RTO) markets. Across ISO/RTO markets, average (2015-2019) simulated incremental revenues from regulation market participation were $\$$0.0-2.9/MWh (+0-15% of revenue without participation) for standalone VRE owners and $\$$1-33/MWh (+1-69%) for hybrid VRE owners. However, ISO/RTO reserve markets are relatively thin and have the potential to become saturated by energy storage projects that are currently in ISO/RTO interconnection queues. In most markets, standalone and hybrid VRE were able to provide regulation reserves during periods with high regulation prices, suggesting that VRE participation in AS markets could have high system value. The analysis highlights the value of separate upward and downward regulation products and suggests that ISOs/RTOs might consider initially focusing on enabling hybrid VRE provision of AS.

Theory-guided Design of Refractory MPEAs for High-Temperature, Harsh-Service Conditions

Focusing on novel materials for harsh-service environments (oxidation, corrosion, and load), durability, higher operational temperature, and direct impact on power-generation technology, the goal was, using a quantitative theory-guided design approach integrated with high-throughput synthesis and characterization for validation, to accelerate by 50% the development of high temperature, refractory-based multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) materials platforms (with co-designed oxidation-resistant, self-healing coatings) that demonstrate phase-stable operation with desired properties at 10-20% higher temperatures in oxidizing environments over state-ofthe- art systems (like Ni-stainless steels, i.e., Haynes 282 – used in critical gas turbine applications, and refractory TZM, i.e., molybdenum-rich Mo99.4-Ti0.5-Zr0.08-C0.02 in wt%). Notably, refractory MPEAs may achieve higher operational temperatures with superior creep strength and offer 50-100% larger thermal conductivity (140-170 W/m-K) than Ni-based systems, potentially eliminating active cooling, reducing system weight, complexity, and cost. Achieving this goal addresses DOE material challenges in energy generation and efficiency (higher-temperature operation), reduced lifecycle energy (waste-heat recovery), and accelerating materials development in support of AMO’s Strategic Plan and QTR goals. DOE’s Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) goal of reducing industrial energy intensity and GHG emissions is addressed by development of coated refractory MPEAs exhibiting 20%+ higher operational temperature (direct increase of Carnot efficiency), higher melting temperatures (better phase stability), superior creep strength (better lifetime with creep rate lower by factor of 10), larger (50-100%) thermal conductivity (improved cooling without active cooling), reduced complexity (single-phase alloys), self-healing coating (reliable oxidation-resistance) and cost.

Material Resilience in Harsh Service Conditions

Resilience describes the attributes of a material that allow it to withstand or resist detrimental environmental effects degrading properties and performance. In service, materials may experience harsh or extreme conditions, but even modest thermal or load conditions experienced over a long period can degrade performance. Thus, the National Nuclear Security Administration mission requires predictive understanding of materials performance in harsh and extreme conditions over long periods. This performance is particularly relevant for applications in which replacement is impractical, impossible, or costly. This area of leadership addresses the evolution of material properties in environments that include static and dynamic stress, radiation, and chemical or thermal extremes. A particular focus is on situations when environments coexist or for which collection of experimental data is challenging or impossible. The capability to predict and control the nature and evolution of properties to allow designing resilience is a crucial aspect of mission success in national nuclear, global, and energy security.

Performance Testing of Software Upgrade for SRNL CPC Instrument at the Nuclear Material Laboratory, Office of Safeguards Analytical Services, International Atomic Energy Agency

This report summarizes the performance testing for the Software upgrade for the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) Controlled Potential Coulometry (CPC) instrument. This upgrade is specifically to meet the needs of the Nuclear Material Laboratory, Office of Safeguards Analytical Services, International Atomic Energy Agency at Seibersdorf, Austria. The instrument hardware was upgraded in 2010, but the software continued to operate on a Windows platform using a High Tech Basic (HT Basic) application. HT Basic usage is declining. The IAEA requested an upgrade to the existing coulometer software to Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW), an object-oriented programming language in wide use and one the NML staff is familiar with. The software was developed by SRNL Software Engineer, with assistance from Electrical Engineer and Scientist. Once developed, the new LabVIEW software was validated, tested with Iron (surrogate for plutonium) and plutonium. Once testing was completed, the software was installed at the International Atomic Energy Agency Nuclear Material Laboratory (IAEA NML) coulometer, and SRNL provided hands on training to NML staff on using the new software.

Development of Cast Valve Bodies For High Temperature Service

Gen 3 Concentrating Solar-Thermal Power (CSP) system components are required to operate at 750°C - 800°C to achieve the Sunshot target of 6 cents/kWh. Haynes ® 282 and IN ® 740H are preferred alloys for the construction of these components due to their high tensile and creep strengths for service at temperatures greater than 750°C. There is significant motivation to lower the cost of materials and components so that the capital costs can be minimized. One approach to reduce costs is to fabricate castings at the lowest possible cost. To obtain the lowest cost in castings, there is a significant need to maximize yields in castings by decreasing rejects due to casting defects and to minimize wastage in material lost in the gating systems. However, very little work has been performed to develop cast products using Haynes ® 282. Although preliminary work has established the feasibility of casting Haynes ® 282 using investment and sand casting, there are no commercial cast components available. In particular, there is significant interest in the development of casting design and process technology for the fabrication of components such as valve bodies using Haynes ® 282.
