A practical obstacle detection system for the Mars Rover

Discussion of an obstacle detection system which uses a laser range finder as the principal sensing device. The laser scans the scene ahead and stores the range data for the terrain in a matrix form. This matrix can be thought of as a 'range image'. This range varies from point to point, but sharp changes are caused by the presence of obstacles. Some existing algorithms and one developed by the authors were used to obtain the outlines of obstacles from the 'range image'. All these algorithms end with a thresholding operation. A theoretical analysis shows how a proper value of the threshold may be chosen, given the type of irregularity of the terrain to be detected. The analysis also shows how large the statistics of measurement noise can be allowed without leading to false alarms.

Practical aspects of using a maximum likelihood estimator

The application of a maximum likelihood estimator to flight data is discussed and procedures to facilitate routine analysis of a large amount of flight data are proposed. Flight data were used to demonstrate the proposed procedures. Modeling considerations are discussed for the system to be identified, including linear aerodynamics, instrumentation, and data time shifts, and aerodynamic biases for the specific types of maneuvers to be analyzed. Data editing to eliminate common data acquisition problems, and a method of identifying other problems are considered. The need for careful selection of the maneuver or portions of the maneuver to be analyzed is pointed out. Uncertaintly levels (analogous to Cramer-Rao bounds) are discussed as a way of recognizing significant new information.

Practical multi-spectrum Hadamard transform spectrometer

Specifications of a new Hadamard transform spectrometer for infrared astronomical applications are presented. The instrument has 15 entrance slits and 255 exit slits. Data can be gathered at the rate of up to five readings per second so that the entire spectral run lasts some thirteen minutes. The data is processed in real time by a minicomputer. At the end of the thirteen minute run the spectrum is available for immediate viewing on a CRT display. The spectra can be punched and stored on paper tape for later processing.

A practical concept for powered or tethered weight-lifting LTA vehicles

A concept for a multi-hull weightlifting airship is presented. The concept is based upon experience in the design and handling of gas-filled balloons for commercial purposes, it was first tested in April, 1972. In the flight test, two barrage balloons were joined side-by-side, with an intermediate frame, and launched in captive flight. The success of this flight test led to plans for a development program calling for a powered, piloted prototype, a follow-on 40 ton model, and a 400 ton transport model. All of these airships utilize a tetrehedric three-line tethering method for loading and unloading phases of flight, which bypasses many of the difficulties inherent in the handling of a conventional airship near the ground. Both initial and operating costs per ton of lift capability are significantly less for the subject design than for either helicopters or airships of conventional mono-hull design.

Assessment of practicality of remote sensing techniques for a study of the effects of strip mining in Alabama

Because of the volume of coal produced by strip mining, the proximity of mining operations, and the diversity of mining methods (e.g. contour stripping, area stripping, multiple seam stripping, and augering, as well as underground mining), the Warrior Coal Basin seemed best suited for initial studies on the physical impact of strip mining in Alabama. Two test sites, (Cordova and Searles) representative of the various strip mining techniques and environmental problems, were chosen for intensive studies of the correlation between remote sensing and ground truth data. Efforts were eventually concentrated in the Searles Area, since it is more accessible and offers a better opportunity for study of erosional and depositional processes than the Cordova Area.

The practical operational-amplifier gyrator circuit for inductorless filter synthesis

A literature is reported for gyrator circuits utilizing operational amplifiers as the active device. A gyrator is a two port nonreciprocal device with the property that the input impedance is proportional to the reciprocal of the load impedance. Following an experimental study, the gyrator circuit with optimum properties was selected for additional testing. A theoretical analysis was performed and compared to the experimental results for excellent agreement.

Practical aspects of a maximum likelihood estimation method to extract stability and control derivatives from flight data

A maximum likelihood estimation method was applied to flight data and procedures to facilitate the routine analysis of a large amount of flight data were described. Techniques that can be used to obtain stability and control derivatives from aircraft maneuvers that are less than ideal for this purpose are described. The techniques involve detecting and correcting the effects of dependent or nearly dependent variables, structural vibration, data drift, inadequate instrumentation, and difficulties with the data acquisition system and the mathematical model. The use of uncertainty levels and multiple maneuver analysis also proved to be useful in improving the quality of the estimated coefficients. The procedures used for editing the data and for overall analysis are also discussed.

The Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE). Part 3: A systematic approach to the practical application of remote-sensing technology

The application of remote sensing technology by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is examined. The activities of the USDA Remote-Sensing User Requirement Task Force which include cataloging USDA requirements for earth resources data, determining those requirements that would return maximum benefits by using remote sensing technology and developing a plan for acquiring, processing, analyzing, and distributing data to satisfy those requirements are described. Emphasis is placed on the large area crop inventory experiment and its relationship to the task force.

Survey of capeweed distribution in Australia in relation to climate, landforms, soil types and management practices

The author has identified the following significant results. The ground measurements of the reflectivity of the capeweed species shows significant variation from the pasture species measured. The variation in the capeweed signature, as a function of the flower cover indicates that the optimum time for a survey would be when the capeweed is at peak flowering.

An analytical and experimental stress analysis of a practical mode II fracture-test specimen

A boundary collocation method has been employed to determine the Mode II stress intensity factors for a pair of through-the-thickness edge cracks in a finite isotropic plate. An elastostatic analysis has been carried out in terms of the complete Williams stress function employing both even and odd components. The results of the numerical analysis were verified by a two-step procedure whereby the symmetric and antisymmetric portions of the solution were independently compared with existing solutions. The complete solution was verified by comparison with a photoelastic analysis. A compact shear specimen (CSS) of Hysol epoxy resin was loaded in a photoelastic experiment designed to study the isochromatic fringe patterns resulting from the Mode II crack tip stress distribution. The experiment verified that a pure Mode II stress distribution existed in the neighborhood of the crack tips and confirmed the accuracy of the boundary collocation solution for the Mode II stress intensity factors.

An effective and practical fire-protection system

A high-performance sandwich-type fire protection system comprising a steel outer sheath and insulation combined in various configurations is described. An inherent advantage of the sheath system over coatings is that it eliminates problems of weatherability, materials strength, adhesion, and chemical attack. An experimental comparison between the protection performance of state-of-the-art coatings and the sheath system is presented, with emphasis on the protection of certain types of steel tanks for fuel storage and transport. Sheath systems are thought to be more expensive than coatings in initial implementation, although they are less expensive per year for sufficiently long applications.
