Measured Dynamic Aperture and Detuning of Nonlinear Integrable Optics

One of the most promising advantages of nonlinear integrable optics is strong amplitude dependent tune shift without degrading the dynamic aperture. The integrable optics test accelerator (IOTA) at Fermilab is constructed around nonlinear lattice elements of the elliptical type as described by Danilov and Nagaitsev. Detuning and dynamic aperture scans in IOTA were performed using a fast dipole kicker and a low emittance electron beam. The evolution of the dynamic aperture and detuning for different configurations of the integrable optics lattice are presented.

Commissioning results of the BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron booster AC dipole

Here, an AC dipole has been installed in the AGS booster as part of polarized beam developments for the future Electron Ion Collider (EIC). This will allow preserving helion beam polarization through two intrinsic resonances during acceleration to an energy corresponding to |$Gγ$| = 10.5. AC dipoles can preserve polarization by forcing the beam to undergo large amplitude vertical betatron oscillations. These coherent oscillations cause all particles to sample the strong horizontal fields of quadrupoles, and result in a full spin flip. In preparation for the AC dipole being used for polarized helions, it was first commissioned with polarized protons. The proton extraction energy was raised to allow protons to cross $Gγ$ = 0 + $v_y$ = 4.8087. As an artifact of the experiment using polarized protons, the booster settings for bunch extraction interfered with the coherent oscillations and limited the maximum coherent amplitude. This interference will be well separated in the case of polarized helions. Polarized protons crossed the $Gγ$ = 0 + $v_y$ intrinsic resonance with a full spin flip through use of the AC dipole. Simulations of the resonance crossing using Zgoubi accurately predict the polarization relative to the coherent amplitude.

Apparatus, method and system for imaging and utilization of SEM charged particles

A scanning electron microscope (SEM) system includes an SEM objective that emits an electron beam toward a sample, causing emission of charged particles including secondary electrons, Auger electrons, backscattered electrons, anions and cations. The SEM system includes electron optics elements that are configured to establish electric fields around the sample that accelerate charged particles toward a detector. A two-dimensional distribution of locations of incidence of the charged particles on the detector is indicative of energies of the charged particles and their emission angles from the sample. A three-dimensional spatial distribution of charged particles emitted from the sample is recovered by performing an Abel transform over the distribution on the detector. The energies and emission angles of the charged particles are then determined from the three-dimensional spatial distribution.

[Accelerator] R&D for Future Colliders

In this talk I will discuss accelerator R&D topics critical for future colliders. These colliders include circular and linear e+e- Higgs factories, and longer-term options such as muon and hadron high energy colliders. Emphasis will be placed on describing R&D for activities prioritized in the recent P5 report. The talk will cover radio frequency technology, high-filed superconducting magnets, muon cooling, energy efficiency, and other R&D topics.

Feasibility of crystal-assisted collimation in the CERN accelerator complex

Bent silicon crystals mounted on high-accuracy angular actuators were installed in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and extensively tested to assess the feasibility of crystal-assisted collimation in circular hadron colliders. The adopted layout was exploited and regularly upgraded for about a decade by the UA9 Collaboration. The investigations provided the compelling evidence of a strong reduction of beam losses induced by nuclear inelastic interactions in the aligned crystals in comparison with amorphous orientation. A conceptually similar device, installed in the betatron cleaning insertion of CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), was operated through the complete acceleration and storage cycle and demonstrated a large reduction of the background leaking from the collimation region and radiated into the cold sections of the accelerator and the experimental detectors. The implemented layout and the relevant results of the beam tests performed in the SPS and in the LHC with stored proton and ion beams are extensively discussed.

Proposal for a Proton-Bunch Compression Experiment at IOTA in the Strong Space-Charge Regime

The longitudinal compression of intense proton bunches with strong space-charge force is an essential component of a proton-based muon source for a muon collider. This paper discusses a proton-bunch compression experiment at the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) storage ring at Fermilab to explore optimal radio frequency (RF) cavity and lattice configurations. IOTA is a compact fixed-energy storage ring that can circulate a 2.5-MeV proton beam with varying beam parameters and lattice configurations. The study will aim to demonstrate a bunch-compression factor of at least 2 in the IOTA ring while examining the impact of intense space-charge effects on the compression process.

Fermilab Neutrino Program – Accelerators & Experiments

We provide an overview of the Fermilab neutrino program, including details for both the accelerator and experiment aspect of the program. On the accelerator side, the current operation of the proton complex is presented, alongside the status of the upcoming PIP-II upgrade and the newly proposed ACE-MIRT upgrade. On the detector side, the SBN and NOVA programs are presented, as well as the status of the upcoming DUNE/LBNF upgrade. The Fermilab neutrino program planning is contextualized in terms of the recent P5 report, as well as ongoing discussions on future flavor and collider programs.

Reconstruction of the BNB and NuMI Neutrino Bunch Structure with ICARUS

ICARUS serves as the Far Detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program at Fermilab, sitting on-axis on the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) and 6$^\circ$ off-axis from the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam. Neutrinos from both beams inherit the timing sub-structure of their parent proton spills, which is in turn derived from either the Booster's or the Main Injector's synchrotron acceleration. Since neutrino propagation introduces only a constant offset, their timing structure is preserved as they travel. Identifying this structure in data represents a powerful tool for selecting neutrino events and searching for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). This poster presents the preliminary reconstruction of the BNB and NuMI neutrino bunch structure with ICARUS data, exploiting only the precise timing of ICARUS optical readout system to both locate and assign a time to each interaction.

Equidistant optimization of elliptical superconducting rf standing wave cavities

A record accelerating rate was achieved earlier in standing wave (SW) SRF cavities when their shape was optimized for a lower peak surface magnetic field sacrificing the peak surface electric field. In view of new materials with higher limiting magnetic fields, expected for SRF cavities, in the first line of the Nb 3 Sn, the approach to optimization of cavity shape should be revised. A method of equidistant optimization, offered earlier for traveling wave (TW) cavities is applied to SW cavities. It is shown here that without limitation by magnetic field, the maximal accelerating rate is defined not only by limitations of the electric field but to a significant degree by the cavity shape. For example, for a cavity with the aperture radius of $R$ $a$ = 35 mm, the minimal ratio of the peak surface electric field to the accelerating rate is about $E$ pk / $E$ acc = 1.54. So, with the maximal surface field experimentally achieved $E$ pk ~ 125 MV / m, the maximal achievable accelerating rate is about 80 MeV / m even if there are no restrictions by the magnetic field. Optimized cavity shapes with and without limitations by a magnetic field are presented. Another opportunity—optimization for a low magnetic field, is opening for the same material, Nb 3 Sn, with the purpose of having a high-quality factor and increased accelerating rate that can be used for industrial linacs with cryocooler-based cooling scheme.
