Development of a Geothermal Module in reV: Quantifying the Geothermal Potential While Accounting for the Geospatial Intersection of the Grid Infrastructure and Land Use Characteristics: Preprint

The Renewable Energy Potential (reV) model is a geospatial platform for estimating technical potential and developing renewable energy supply curves, initially developed for wind and solar technologies. The model evaluates deployment constraints, considering land use, environmental, and cultural factors, and estimates the distance to existing grid features to connect future plants (Maclaurin et al., 2021). A pressing deficiency in the reV model, however, is representation of geothermal electricity generation technologies. To address this gap, we developed a novel geothermal generation module for reV that allows for representation and analysis at the same level of detail as other renewable technologies. This paper describes our process for evaluating data sources for the modeling, and presents five preliminary reV geothermal results. More specifically, we present two sets of resource data that represent upper and lower bounds for geothermal potential. We then present several sensitivity runs using the upper bound resource data; the results are encouraging that levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) can be reduced by optimizing the location and estimated capacity of the spatially diverse geothermal resource while considering the distance to existing grid infrastructure. Our preliminary supply curves and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) results should be considered with care due to the highly uncertainty in geothermal resource potential data. We present median LCOE values for the conterminous U.S. for five scenarios: four hydrothermal (3.5km depth) and one EGS (4.5km depth). The capital and operating costs for each respective technology are modeled. We also compare results using two different resource data sources.

THM: the MOOSE thermal hydraulics module

The MOOSE Thermal Hydraulics Module (THM) is designed to facilitate the development of thermal hydraulic system models. It provides the capability to assemble networks of coupled components such as pipes, junctions, valves, turbomachinery, and heat exchangers. Its library of components supports a single-phase, compressible flow model based on a variable-area formulation of the Euler equations of gas dynamics and discretized using a finite volume scheme. THM offers a flexible system for specifying closures such as friction factors or heat transfer coefficients, allowing the user to choose from built-in correlations or define their own in the input file. A control logic system can be used to control input parameters, necessary for implementing transient scenarios and mirroring real control systems in thermal hydraulic systems. THM can be coupled with other MOOSE-based applications for multiphysics calculations. This talk will give an introduction to the capabilities of THM and provide some examples of its usage and validation.

MOOSE Optimization Module Overview: Application to Residual Stress Inversion in Nuclear Fuel Plates

Manufacturing methods, material selections and unique plate geometries used in low enriched uranium plate fuels for the High Performance Research Reactor (HPRR) have led to concerns about the residual stresses effect on bond strength of the fuel/cladding interfaces and overall fuel performance under irradiation. The current HPRR plate fuel test program performed residual stress calculations using the contour method with experimental displacement data obtained by incrementally cutting the plate fuel. In this work, we use a gradient based inverse optimization module developed within the MOOSE framework to estimate normal and shear residual stresses within the plate fuels using displacement data taken from a cut placed in the HPRR fuel plate. These results are verified against residual stress calculations obtained from the contour method. The inversion protocol used in this work utilizes two meshes to separately discretize the physics and parameter space. This allows a fine mesh to be used to fully resolve the physics and geometry of the forward problem. A coarser mesh is used to resolve the parameter space with spatially varying mesh density determined from a sensitivity analysis. The adaptive resolution of the parameter space essentially has the effect of regularization as it is designed to achieve the bias-variance tradeoff.

Computational model for predicting the performance of fluid-powered longiudinal piston modules and motors.

A Matlab-based computational model line code has been developed for predicting the performance of fluid-powered longitudinal piston modules and motors. A system of equations has been developed based upon applying the conservation of mass to a control volume defined by a reciprocating piston. The method results in a differential equation that predicts the pressure gradient in the control volume as a function of rotor rotation angle. The model uses an integration scheme to predict the pressure state in the control volume. The orifice equation is used to predict the flowrate in and out of the control volume. From the resulting solution the torque and speed characteristics of the motor configuration can be predicted, optimized, or tailored for a specific requirement.SAND2019-13983 M Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

Data Processing Unit Services Module

The Data Processing Services Module (DPUSM) provides the ability to perform pluggable compression, erasure coding, checksuming and other important file system operations within the Linux kernel. The pluggable provider interface allows for the use of hardware acceleration of those services. In-kernel file systems are then able to use these functions to use these accelerators to perform operations that are normally run on the processor, resulting in improved file system performance. Third parties will register "providers" with the DPUSM to communicate with their respective accelerators. Providers will implement functions with DPUSM API signatures so that the DPUSM can translate the data inputted by users of the DPUSM into data that providers recognize.

Modulation of Neuroinflammation by Low-Dose Radiation Therapy in an Animal Model of Alzheimer's Disease

Recently, several studies have reported that low-dose radiation therapy (RT) suppresses the release of proinflammatory cytokines in inflammatory-degenerative disorders, including Alzheimer disease (AD). AD is the most common cause of dementia, and neuroinflammation is one of the major contributing factors in AD pathogenesis. Therefore, low-dose RT may be used clinically for treating AD. However, the appropriate doses, effects, and underlying mechanisms of RT in AD have not been determined. In this study, we aimed to determine the appropriate RT dose and schedule for AD treatment and to investigate the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of low-dose RT in AD.

Finned-tube-integrated modular thermal storage systems for HVAC load modulation in buildings

While there is considerable focus on latent-based thermal energy storage (TES) systems, the low thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCMs) remains a critical concern. Many approaches to enhance PCM conductivity either require complicated synthesis processes or are cost prohibitive. In this study, we investigate finned-tube modular TES systems, which are simple in design, easy to manufacture, and cost-effective due to their standard materials and components. The study includes detailed modeling and experimentation of two devices containing similar amounts of PCM but different fin spacings. The study reveals that having more fins does not necessarily increase the TES thermal performance because the reduction in the PCM volume fraction can reduce the TES volumetric and specific energy densities. We find that larger fin spacings provide a higher specific energy for lower C rates (<1C), while smaller fin spacings provide a higher specific energy for higher C rates (>1C).

Modulation of Akt vs Stat3 activity by the focal adhesion kinase in non-neoplastic mouse fibroblasts

Adhesion of cells to each other and to the extracellular matrix (ECM) are both required for cellular functions. Cell-to-cell adhesion is mediated by cadherins and their engagement triggers the activation of Stat3, which offers a potent survival signal. Adhesion to the ECM on the other hand, activates FAK which attracts and activates Src, as well as receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), the PI3k/Akt and Ras/Erk pathways. However, the effect of cell density upon FAK and Akt activity has not been examined. We now demonstrate that, interestingly, despite being potent Stat3 activators, Src and RTKs are unable to activate Stat3 in sparsely growing (i.e., without cadherin engagement), non-neoplastic cells attached to the ECM. In contrast, cell aggregation (i.e., cadherin engagement in the absence of adhesion to a solid substratum) was found to activate both Stat3 and Akt. Pharmacologic or genetic reduction of FAK activity abolished Akt activity at low densities, indicating that FAK is an important activator of Akt in this setting. Notably, FAK knockout increased cellular sensitivity to the Stat3 inhibitor CPA7, while FAK reintroduction restored resistance to this drug. These findings suggest a complementary role of integrin/FAK/Akt and cadherin/Stat3-mediated pro-survival pathways, which may be of significance during neoplastic transformation and metastasis.
