Cost analysis of composite fan blade manufacturing processes

The relative manufacturing costs were estimated for large high technology fan blades prepared by advanced composite fabrication methods using seven candidate materials/process systems. These systems were identified as laminated resin matrix composite, filament wound resin matrix composite, superhybrid solid laminate, superhybrid spar/shell, metal matrix composite, metal matrix composite with a spar and shell, and hollow titanium. The costs were calculated utilizing analytical process models and all cost data are presented as normalized relative values where 100 was the cost of a conventionally forged solid titanium fan blade whose geometry corresponded to a size typical of 42 blades per disc. Four costs were calculated for each of the seven candidate systems to relate the variation of cost on blade size. Geometries typical of blade designs at 24, 30, 36 and 42 blades per disc were used. The impact of individual process yield factors on costs was also assessed as well as effects of process parameters, raw materials, labor rates and consumable items.

A high performance cocurrent-flow heat pipe for heat recovery applications

By the introduction of a plate-and-tube separator assembly into a heat pipe vapor core, it has been demonstrated that axial transport capacity in reflux mode can be improved by up to a factor of 10. This improvement is largely the result of eliminating the countercurrent shear that commonly limits reflux heat pipe axial capacity. With benzene, axial heat fluxes up to 1800 W/sq cm were obtained in the temperature range 40 to 80 C, while heat flux densities up to 3000 W/sq cm were obtained with R-11 over the temperature range 40 to 80 C. These very high axial capacities compare favorably with liquid metal limits; the sonic limit for liquid sodium, for example, is 3000 W/sq cm at 657 C. Computational models developed for these cocurrent flow heat pipes agreed with experimental data within + or - 25%.

Ages of intermediate-age Magellanic Cloud star clusters

Ages of intermediate-age Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters have been estimated without locating the faint, unevolved portion of cluster main sequences. Six clusters with established color-magnitude diagrams were selected for study: SL 868, NGC 1783, NGC 1868, NGC 2121, NGC 2209, and NGC 2231. Since red giant photometry is more accurate than the necessarily fainter main-sequence photometry, the distributions of red giants on the cluster color-magnitude diagrams were compared to a grid of 33 stellar evolutionary tracks, evolved from the main sequence through core-helium exhaustion, spanning the expected mass and metallicity range for Magellanic Cloud cluster red giants. The time-dependent behavior of the luminosity of the model red giants was used to estimate cluster ages from the observed cluster red giant luminosities. Except for the possibility of SL 868 being an old globular cluster, all clusters studied were found to have ages less than 10 to the 9th yr. It is concluded that there is currently no substantial evidence for a major cluster population of large, populous clusters greater than 10 to the 9th yr old in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Analytical ultrasonics for characterization of metallurgical microstructures and transformations

The application of contact (piezoelectric) and noncontact (laser generation and detection) ultrasonic techniques for dynamic investigation of precipitation hardening processes in aluminum alloys, as well as crystallization and phase transformation in rapidly solidified amorphous and microcrystalline alloys is discussed. From the variations of the sound velocity and attenuation the precipitation mechanism and kinetics were determined. In addition, a correlation was established between the observed changes in the velocity and attenuation and the mechanical properties of age-hardenable aluminum alloys. The behavior of the elastic moduli, determined ultrasonically, were found to be sensitive to relaxation, crystallization and phase decomposition phenomena in rapidly solidified metallic glasses. Analytical ultrasonics enables determination of the activation energies and growth parameters of the reactions. Therefrom theoretical models can be constructed to explain the changes in mechanical and physical properties upon heat treatment of glassy alloys. The composition dependence of the elastic moduli in amorphous Cu-Zr alloys was found to be related to the glass transition temperature, and consequently to the glass forming ability of these alloys. Dynamic ultrasonic analysis was found to be feasible for on-line, real-time, monitoring of metallurgical processes.

H 1504 + 65 - An extraordinarily hot compact star devoid of hydrogen and helium

The optical identification of the bright soft X-ray source H 1504 + 65, originally discovered by the HEAO I A-2 low energy detectors, is reported. The optical counterpart exhibits a steep, virtually featureless continuum from optical wavelengths through the ultraviolet. The spectrum is remarkably featureless except for a broad O VI adsorption feature at 3494.7 A and C IV absorption at 3934 A and emission at 4658 A. The soft X-ray data, which are not consistent with any published models for degenerate stars having predominantly H or He compositions, suggest that H 1504 + 65 is a metal-rich, near-degenerate object of very high temperature. Qualitative considerations indicate that it is definitely hotter than PG 1159 - 035 and similar objects. A temperature of roughly 160,000 K is suggested.

Original structures, and fragmentation and reassembly histories of asteroids - Evidence from meteorites

The validity of an onion shell model (OSM) for chondrite parent asteroids was assessed using metallographic cooling rates (MCR) derived from the compositions of metallic Fe-Ni grains. The hypothesis evaluated was that the hottest materials in chondrites would have been buried the deepest and cooled the slowest. The survey covered breccia from regolith and 13 different chondrites. The MCRs agreed well with cooling rates predicted by fission-track thermometry and Ar-40/Ar-39 ages. The OSM predicts an inverse correlation between the cooling rate and the petrographic type. Low correlations found between the MCRs and petrographic type indicate that chondrite parent asteroids were not assembled with onion shell structures.

Thermosolutal convection during directional solidification. II - Flow transitions

The influence of thermosolutal convection on solute segregation in crystals grown by vertical directional solidification of binary metallic alloys or semiconductors is studied. Finite differences are used in a two-dimensional time-dependent model which assumes a planar crystal-melt interface to obtain numerical results. It is assumed that the configuration is periodic in the horizontal direction. Consideration is given to the possibility of multiple flow states sharing the same period. The results are represented in bifurcation diagrams of the nonlinear states associated with the critical points of linear theory. Variations of the solutal Rayleigh number can lead to the occurrence of multiple steady states, time-periodic states, and quasi-periodic states. This case is compared to that of thermosolutal convection with linear vertical gradients and stress-free boundaries.

Electrical properties of polyimides containing a near-surface deposit of silver

Films containing a surface or near-surface deposit of palladium, gold or copper metal as well as tin, cobalt, copper, or lithium oxides have been prepared by dissolving appropriate metal salts into poly(amide-acid)/N,N-dimethylacetamide solutions and curing the solvent cast films to temperatures up to 300 C. This preparation technique has been extended to evaluate the thermal, spectroscopic, and electrical characteristics of condensation polyimide films modified with silver nitrate. A near-surface deposit of metallic silver results but the reflective surface has high electrical resistivity (sheet resistivity) due to a polymer coating or overlayer above the metal. Details pertaining to the silver nitrate modified condensation polyimides are presented. Also, the applicability of the structural model and electrical model previously proposed for the cobalt oxide system are assessed.

Unified viscoplastic constitutive equations and their applications

Unified constitutive equations for time- and temperature-dependent metallic plastic deformation have been applied in FEM simulations of forming processes; increasingly powerful computational tools and physical models are being used to numerically model complex engineering problems. Once confidence has been gained through adequate verification, these numerical models will increasingly replace experimental models. Attention is presently given to the contributions made by physical metallurgy, continuum mechanics, and computational mechanics.

Si-Ge-metal ternary phase diagram calculations

Solution crystal growth and doping conditions of Si-Ge alloys used for high-temperature thermoelectric generation are determined here. Liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) has been successfully employed recently to obtain single-crystalline homogeneous layers of Si-Ge solid solutions from a liquid metal solvent. Knowledge of Si-Ge-metallic solvent ternary phase diagrams is essential for further single-crystal growth development. Consequently, a thermodynamic equilibrium model was used to calculate the phase diagrams of the Si-Ge-M systems, including solid solubilities, where M is Al, Ga, In, Sn, Pb, Sb, or Bi. Good agreement between calculated liquidus and solidus data and experimental DTA and microprobe results was obtained. The results are used to compare the suitability of the different systems for crystal growth (by LPE-type process).

Oxidation processes in magneto-optic and related materials

The surface oxidation processes of thin films of magneto-optic materials, such as the rare-earth transition metal alloys have been studied, starting in ultrahigh vacuum environments, using surface analysis techniques, as a way of modeling the oxidation processes which occur at the base of a defect in an overcoated material, at the instant of exposure to ambient environments. Materials examined have included FeTbCo alloys, as well as those same materials with low percentages of added elements, such a Ta, and their reactivities to both O2 and H2O compared with materials such as thin Fe films coated with ultrathin adlayers of Ti. The surface oxidation pathways for these materials is reviewed, and XPS data presented which indicates the type of oxides formed, and a critical region of Ta concentration which provides optimum protection.

A spectroscopic study of damped Lyman-alpha systems in the Las Campanas/Palomar survey

The present intermediate-resolution spectra of nine QSOs contain 15 candidate damped Ly-alpha absorption features which are part of a sample of candidate damped Ly-alpha absorption lines. Ten of the 15 candidates are confirmed to have these features; eight of the ten have neutral hydrogen column density greater than 2 x 10 exp 20/sq cm. A simple curve-of-growth analysis is conducted for seven of the ten confirmed Ly-alpha systems, in order to characterize the kinematics of the absorbing gas; the deduced velocity dispersion, which is too large to be compatible with the simple velocity structure indicated by the 21-cm absorption data, is interpreted as grounds for a two-phase model encompassing a quiescent H I gas and a turbulent gas that dominates the equivalent widths of associated metal lines.

The possibility of forming an inhomogeneous Sun and the solar neutrino effect

Recent observations confirm that the flux of neutrinos from the interior of the Sun is significantly less than what is expected on the basis of solar models. It has long been known that a low neutrino flux could result from a temperature in the Sun's core lower than the approximately 1.5 x 10(exp 7) K central temperature given by standard solar models. A low central temperature could occur if the solar interior were depleted in the so-called metals -- atomic species heavier than helium -- resulting in lower internal opacity. In this case, chemical abundances measured in the solar convection zone would be unrepresentative of the deep-interior abundances. The possibility of a compositionally inhomogeneous Sun has usually been discarded on the basis of cosmogonical arguments against the formation of such nonhomogeneity. This paper suggests that compositional nonhomogeneity could have arisen through unremarkable physical processes during the formation of the Sun, and that a compositionally inhomogeneous Sun remains a viable possibility for investigation of the solar neutrino problem.

Hubble Space Telescope high resolution spectroscoy of the exposed white dwarf in the dwarf nova VW Hydri in quiescence: A rapidly rotating white dwarf

We obtained a far-ultraviolet spectrum of the dwarf nova VW Hyi in quiescence, with the Hubble Space Telescope Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph covering the region of the Si iv lambda(lambda)1393, 1402 resonance doublet. The broad, shallow Si iv doublet feature is fully resolved, has a total equivalent width of 2.8 A, and is the first metal absorption feature to be clearly detected in the exposed white dwarf. Our synthetic spectral analysis, using a model grid constructed with the code TLUSTY, resulted in a reasonable fit to a white dwarf photosphere with T(sub eff) = 22,000 +/- 2000 K, log g = 8.0 +/- 0.3, an approximately solar Si/H abundance, and a rotational velocity, v sin i approximately equal to 600 km/s. This rotation rate, while not definitive because it is based upon just one line transition, is 20% of the Keplerian (breakup) velocity of the white dwarf and hence does not account for the unexpectedly low boundary-layer luminosity inferred from the soft-X-ray/extreme ultra-violet bands where most of the boundary-layer luminosity should be radiated. The predicted boundary-layer luminosity for a 0.6 solar mass white dwarf accreting at the rate 10(exp -10) solar mass/yr and rotating at 600 km/s, corresponding to VW Hyi in quiescence, is 2 x 10(exp 32) ergs/s when proper account is taken of the rotational kinetic energy going into spinning up the white dwarf. If the boundary-layer area is equal to that of the white dwarf, then T(sub bl) = 24,000 K. This is essentially identical to the photspheric luminosity and temperature determined in far-ultraviolet photospheric analyses. If the boundary-layer area is 10(exp -3) of the white dwarf surface area, then T(sub bl) = 136,000 K.

Experimental Studies on Mass Transport of Cadmium-Zinc Telluride by Physical Vapor Transport

Experimental studies on mass transport of ternary compound, Cd(1-x)Zn(x)Te by physical vapor transport (PVT) for source compositions up to X = 0.21 are presented. The effect of thermochemical (temperatures, vapor composition) and other factors (preparation of the source, crystal growth rate, temperature gradient) on composition and composition profiles of the grown crystals were investigated. A steep decrease in the mass flux with an increase in X(crystal) for X less than 0.1, and a difference in composition between the source and the deposited material have been observed. The composition profiles of the crystals were found to depend on the density and pretreatment of the source, and on the temperature gradient in the source zone. The homogeneity of the crystals improves at low undercoolings and/or when an appropriate excess of metal constituents is present in the vapor phase. The experimental results are in good agreement with our thermochemical model of this system.

Nonlinear Ultrasonic Characterization of Fatigue Microstructures

Dislocation dipole substructures formed during metal fatigue are shown to produce a substantial distortion of ultrasonic waves propagating through the fatigued material. A model of ultrasonic wave-dislocation dipole interactions is developed that quantifies the wave distortion by means of a material nonlinearity parameter (beta). Application of the model to AA2024-T4 predicts a value of p approximately 300% larger in material cyclically loaded for 100 kcycles in stress-control at 276 MPa and R=0 than that measured for virgin material. Experimental measurements show a monotonic increase in p as a function of the number of fatigue cycles that closely approaches the predicted increase. The experiments also suggest that the relevant dislocation substructures are localized in the material.
