Reduction of computer usage costs in predicting unsteady aerodynamic loadings caused by control surface motions: Computer program description

A digital computer program was developed to calculate unsteady loadings caused by motions of lifting surfaces with leading edge and trailing edge controls based on the subsonic kernel function approach. The pressure singularities at hinge line and side edges were extracted analytically as a preliminary step to solving the integral equation of collocation. The program calculates generalized aerodynamic forces for user supplied deflection modes. Optional intermediate output includes pressure at an array of points, and sectional generalized forces. From one to six controls on the half span can be accomodated.

Automated procedure for developing hybrid computer simulations of turbofan engines. Part 1: General description

A systematic, computer-aided, self-documenting methodology for developing hybrid computer simulations of turbofan engines is presented. The methodology that is pesented makes use of a host program that can run on a large digital computer and a machine-dependent target (hybrid) program. The host program performs all the calculations and data manipulations that are needed to transform user-supplied engine design information to a form suitable for the hybrid computer. The host program also trims the self-contained engine model to match specified design-point information. Part I contains a general discussion of the methodology, describes a test case, and presents comparisons between hybrid simulation and specified engine performance data. Part II, a companion document, contains documentation, in the form of computer printouts, for the test case.

Analytical description of charged particle transport along arbitrary guiding field configurations

Aspects of charged particle transport theory have been studied by Earl (1973, 1974, 1976) in a number of investigations. The investigations were conducted under the assumption that particles propagate along a DC guiding field with negligible perpendicular transport and that pitch-angle scattering by random fields can be described by the Fokker-Planck formalism. The present study provides a generalized and simplified treatment of focused transport. The first step is taken with respect to a perturbation analysis by which the Boltzmann equation is solved in terms of successively improved approximations to its exact solution. The first approximation is the sum of isotropic pseudodiffusive and anisotropic supercoherent components whose coefficients must satisfy two coupled partial differential equations. The normalization constant K and the pseudodiffusive velocity, which appear in the first-order transport equations, are given by simple integrals over the pitch angle.

Analytical description of charged particle transport along arbitrary guiding-field configurations

Focused particle transport is analyzed in terms of partial differential equations which are applicable to arbitrary spatial variations of the mean free path and the focusing length. A distribution function for transport is written in two forms of the Boltzmann equation and a coefficient of spatial diffusion is defined. Changes from a nearly coherent propagation of flare particles in regions of strong focusing near the sun to ordinary diffusion in the outer solar system are described as supercoherent transitions. A solution to the steady state problem is developed and results are presented for a monopolar guiding field configuration with isotropic diffusion gradually giving way to anisotropy in a region suggestive of a collimated beam of particles streaming away from its source.

Description of Seasat radiometer status and results

Improved geophysical algorithms are shown to be able to determine sea surface temperature (SST) to an accuracy of 1 C (1 sigma) under favorable surface and atmospheric conditions over an SST range of 10-30 C. Under similar conditions, the radiometer wind retrievals track the scatterometer winds within a scatter of 2 m/s (1 sigma) over a wind speed range of 0-25 m/s. These conditions require that contamination from land, rain, sun glint, and radio frequency interference be avoided. What is more, water vapor determinations in the midlatitudes and in the tropical Pacific are found to agree with estimates of precipitable water from radiosondes to within 10%.

A unique flight test facility - Description and results

The Dryden Flight Research Facility has developed a unique research facility for conducting aerodynamic and fluid mechanics experiments in flight. A low aspect ratio fin, referred to as the flight test fixture (FTF), is mounted on the underside of the fuselage of an F-104G aircraft. The F-104/FTF facility is described, and the capabilities are discussed. The capabilities include (1) a large Mach number envelope (0.4 to 2.0), including the region through Mach 1.0; (2) the potential ability to test articles larger than those that can be tested in wind tunnels; (3) the large chord Reynolds number envelope (greater than 40 million); and (4) the ability to define small increments in friction drag between two test surfaces. Data are presented from experiments that demonstrate some of the capabilities of the FTF, including the shuttle thermal protection system airload tests, instrument development, and base drag studies. Proposed skin friction experiments and instrument evaluation studies are also discussed.

The optimization of aircraft seat cushion fire-blocking layers. Full Scale: Test description and results

Full-scale burn tests were conducted on thirteen different seat cushion configurations in a cabin fire simulator. The fire source used was a quartz lamp radiant energy panel with a propane pilot flame. During each test, data were recorded for cushion temperatures, radiant heat flux, rate of weight loss of test specimens, and cabin temperatures. When compared to existing passenger aircraft seat cushions, the test specimens incorporating a fire barrier and those fabricated from advance materials, using improved construction methods, exhibited significantly greater fire resistance.

Description and evaluation of the Acoustic Profiling of Ocean Currents (APOC) system used on R. V. Oceanus cruise 96 on 11-22 May 1981

The underway current profiling system which consists of a microprocessor controlled data logger that collects and formats data from a four beam Ametek-Straza 300 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler, heading from the ship's gyrocompass, and navigation information from a Loran-C receiver and a satellite navigation unit is discussed. Data are recorded on magnetic tape and real time is calculated. Time averaging is required to remove effects of ship motion. An intercomparison is made with a moored vector measuring current meter (VMCM). The mean difference in hourly averaged APOC and VMCM currents over the four hour intercomparison is a few mm s minus including: two Gulf Stream crossings, a warm core ring survey, and shallow water in a frontal zone to the east of Nantucket Shoals.

CARE 3 phase 2 report - mathematical description

CARE III (Computer-Aided Reliability Estimation, version three) a computer program designed to help estimate the reliability of complex, redundant systems is described. Although the program can model a wide variety of redundant structures, it was developed specifically for fault tolerant avionics systems. CARE III generalizes the class of system structures that can be modeled and greatly expands the coverage model to take into account such effects as intermittent and transient faults, latent faults, and error propagation.

A high-Reynolds-number seal test facility: Facility description and preliminary test data

A facility has been developed for testing the leakage and rotordynamic characteristics of interstage-seal configurations for the HPFTP (High Pressure Fuel Turbopump) of the SSME (Space Shuttle Main Engine). Axial Reynolds numbers on the order of 400,000 are realized in the test facility by using a Dupont freon fluid called Halon (CBrF3). The kinematic viscosity of Halon is of the same order as the liquid hydrogen used in the HPFTP. Initial testing has focused on the current flight configurations (a three-segment, stepped unit) and a convergent-taper candidate.

Description of data base management activities

ARC's current and future data processing needs have been identified and defined. Requirements for improved data processing capabilities are listed: (1) Centralized control of system data files. Establish a DBA/data base administrator position with responsibility for management of the Centers numerous data bases; (2) Programmer tools to improve efficiency of performance; (3) Direct and timely access to information. Presently, the user submits query requests to the data processing department where they are prioritized with other queries and then batch processed using a report generator; (4) On line data entry. With the merger of the Dryden facility with ARC on line data entry, edit and updates have become mandatory for timely operation and reporting. A DBMS software package was purchased to meet the above requirements.
