Subcritical Neutron and Gamma Noise Measurements at the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) [Slides]

Post measurement synchronization of noise signals allowed for the investigation of previously unseen correlations. Noise of gamma, thermal and fast neutron signals performed similarly in estimating the prompt neutron decay constant at various subcritical states. The CPSD amplitude terms displayed different magnitudes. The neutron-based amplitudes suffered more from changes in detector efficiency as the number of fuel rods in the system increased. The time lag between 3 He tubes is observable using the CPSD phase angle and agreed with a simplified diffusion estimation.

Cerberus and the Zeus Suite of Critical Experiment Benchmarks [Slides]

This presentation finds that as it was designed, Cerberus is extremely sensitive to copper nuclear data. Just changing copper nuclear data to another library can swing simulated keff by >1000 pcm. ENDF/B-VIII.1 and JENDL-5.0 both show large downward trends in keff as copper interstitial thickness is increased

Scalable Fabrication of a Fibrous Amine-functionalized Matrix (FAM) Sorbent for Critical Mineral Recovery

We report a novel flat sheet Fibrous Amine-functionalized Matrix (FAM) sorbent platform designed for efficient and selective capture of CM from dilute solutions. The FAM sorbent features crosslinked amine microfilms coated onto/within a glass fiber matrix, providing fast mass transfer and excellent mechanical stability. Systematic batch and flow-through tests with FAM revealed rapid metal uptake kinetics and high capacity for representative species, achieving ~90 mg/g of Gallium, ~100 mg/g of Cobalt, and ~90 mg/g for Neodymium. Moreover, multiple eluents, including mineral acids and complexing agents, enabled highly effective desorption of adsorbed metals, demonstrating the feasibility of regenerating FAM sorbents. Importantly, tests with authentic coal ash leachate demonstrated strong selectivity toward U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-listed CM and rare earth elements over abundant base cations, confirming the robustness of FAM in realistic complex solutions. The flat sheet geometry was amenable to scaling into durable spiral wound modules, highlighting the potential for future regeneration and reuse. This work establishes FAM sorbents as a promising platform for the recovery of CM from wastewaters, advancing both resource sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Bonneville basin critical zones: Spring chemistry and gastropod ecology in playa-margin wetlands

Playa margin wetlands in the Bonneville basin are sustained by groundwater-fed brackish springs, which transport salts and other solutes into the playa basin. These wetlands are sensitive to changing water availability and quality, which are impacted by changing climate and land use, and whose sediments also provide important records of changing environmental conditions. Gastropods building their shells in these springs provide important recorders of water chemistry and may reflect changing aqueous conditions. In this paper, we analyze spring water chemistry, gastropod ecology and gastropod shell chemistry of Blue Lake (BL) and Horseshoe Springs (HRS), two groundwater-fed wetlands in the Great Salt Lake watershed. Here, we report the physical parameters including pH, temperature, and specific conductivity across the spring pond at Horseshoe springs.
