Test-particle method in kinetic theory of a plasma.

The introduction of a test particle into a system is considered. The system may be described by the Born-Bogoliubov-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon hierarchy. The field particles form a cloud which surrounds the test particle. The cloud is described by a conditional probability function which satisfies a certain equation. A generalization of the superposition principle reported by Rostoker (1964) to higher order correlation functions is discussed. Kinetic equations with the generalized Lenard-Balescu term are obtained, taking into account also diffusion by waves. The characteristics regarding the absorption or emission of waves by particles can be calculated.

CO2 removal by solid amine sorbents. 1: Experimental studies of amine resin IR-45 with regard to spacecraft applications. 2: Computer program for predicting the transient performance of solid amine sorbent systems

The sorbent behavior of solid amine resin IR-45 with regard to potential use in regenerative CO2-removal systems for manned spacecraft is considered. Measurements of equilibrium sorption capacity of IR-45 for water and for CO2 are reported, and the dynamic mass transfer behavior of IR-45 beds is studied under conditions representative of those expected in a manned spacecraft. A digital computer program was written for the transient performance prediction of CO2 removal systems comprised of solid amine beds. Also evaluated are systems employing inorganic molecular-sieve sorbents. Tests show that there is definitely an effect of water loading on the absorption rate.

Optimization of self-acting herringbone-grooved journal bearings for maximum stability

Groove parameters were determined to maximize the stability of herringbone-grooved journal bearings. Parameters optimized were groove depth, width, length, and angle. Optimization was performed by using a small-eccentricity, infinite-groove analysis in conjunction with a previously developed Newton-Raphson procedure for bearings with the smooth member rotating or with the grooved member rotating at low compressibility numbers, and a newly developed vector technique for bearings with the grooved member rotating at high compressibility numbers. The design curves in this report enable one to choose the optimum bearing for a wide range of operating conditions. Compared with bearings optimized to maximize load capacity, bearings optimized for stability allow a thousandfold increase in bearing-supported mass in some cases before onset of instability, and lose no more than 77 percent of their load capacity in any case studied. Stability is much greater when the grooved member rotates.

Optimization of self-acting herringbone journal bearings for maximum stability

Groove parameters were determined to maximize the stability of herringbone grooved journal bearings. Parameters optimized were groove depth, width, length, and angle. Optimization was performed using a small eccentricity, infinite groove analysis in conjunction with: (1) a previously developed Newton-Raphson procedure for bearings with the smooth member rotating or with the grooved member rotating at low compressibility numbers; (2) a newly-developed vector technique for bearings with the grooved member rotating at high compressibility numbers. The design curves in this report enable one to choose the optimum bearing for a wide range of operating conditions. These include: (1) compressibility numbers from 0 to 80; (2) length to diameter ratios from 1/4 to 2; and (3) smooth or grooved member rotating. Compared to bearings optimized to maximize load capacity, bearings optimized for stability allow a thousandfold increase in bearing-supported mass in some cases before onset of instability. Stability is much greater when the grooved member rotates.

Second Application of the "Successive Transformations Method" to Predict the Safest Lunar Landing Site for an Astronaut: Report 3

The purpose of the first application of the "Successive Transformations Method" described in the second report was to determine, for a manned spacecraft, the optimum landing site on the moon. The results obtained, made by extrapolating the temperature TO furnished by Surveyor, can be summarized as follows: (1) The method is efficient in allowing selection of the optimum landing area. ( 2 ) The zrea selected is extensive and relatively flat; consequently, it is sufficient to allow trine for the difficult landing operation which results from the high speed of the spacecraft when reaching the moon. ( 3 ) The relative temperature obtained is lower than that where Surveyor landed. In this third report, a second application of the "Successive Transformations" is described to determine the safest conditions of a given landing site for the astronaut, especially in relation to determining the composition of the lunar surface material. As a means of accomplishing this task, it is the intent of this paper to analyze lunar craters since they are present over so much of the lunar surface.

Stress analysis of the compact specimen including the effects of pin loading

An improved method of boundary collocation was applied to the two-dimensional stress analysis of the compact specimen. The effects of the pin-loaded holes on stress-intensity factors and crack-opening displacements were investigated for various crack-length-to-specimen-width ratios, hole locations, and internal loadings. The stress-intensity factors for the 'standard' compact specimen under plane-stress or plane-strain conditions were found to be within 1 percent of the stress-intensity factors reported in the ASTM Test for Plane-Strain Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials (E 399-72) over a range of crack-length-to-specimen-width ratios of 0.4 to 0.7. However, for crack-length-to-specimen-width ratios less than 0.4, the pin-load holes (which were not previously accounted for) had a significant effect on stress intensity and crack-opening displacements.

Performance analysis of digital FM demodulators for fading channels in the threshold region

The quasi-optimum digital FM demodulators for fading channels reported earlier (1975) reflected the system performance accurately under high signal to noise ratio conditions. In this paper, the prediction of the system performance for low SNR values is considered. A new set of error variance algorithms is developed from the filter algorithm assuming a Gaussian distribution for the state estimation errors and taking the effect of high frequency terms into consideration. Simulation analysis for an FM system with Rician fading channel shows that these algorithms predict the system performance accurately in the threshold region.

Morphology of Arabidopsis grown under chronic centrifugation and on the clinostat

Morphological measurements were made on populations of Arabidopsis thaliana grown from seed for 21 days under essentially constant environmental conditions except for the influence of gravitational or centrifugal accelerations. Growth conditions were what had been proposed for experiments in an artificial satellite. Observations are reported for plants grown at normal 1-g upright or on horizontal clinostats and for plants grown on a centrifuge. Increased g-force, up to 15 times normal, was found to have significant but small effects on some morphological end points. The plants' sensitivity to the magnitude of the g-force was much less than to its vector direction. Data from centrifuge experiments were extrapolated to zero-g to predict a set of morphological characteristics of a plant developing in the satellite environment. As an alternative means of predicting properties of a zero-g plant, characteristics of plants grown on horizontal clinostats were measured. The results of these two predictive methods were not in agreement. Clinostat grown plants were morphologically distinct from upright stationary controls.

TACT1, a computer program for the transient thermal analysis of a cooled turbine blade or vane equipped with a coolant insert. 1. Users manual

A computer program to calculate transient and steady state temperatures, pressures, and coolant flows in a cooled, axial flow turbine blade or vane with an impingement insert is described. Coolant side heat transfer coefficients are calculated internally in the program, with the user specifying either impingement or convection heat transfer at each internal flow station. Spent impingement air flows in a chordwise direction and is discharged through the trailing edge and through film cooling holes. The ability of the program to handle film cooling is limited by the internal flow model. Sample problems, with tables of input and output, are included in the report. Input to the program includes a description of the blade geometry, coolant supply conditions, outside thermal boundary conditions, and wheel speed. The blade wall can have two layers of different materials, such as a ceramic thermal barrier coating over a metallic substrate. Program output includes the temperature at each node, the coolant pressures and flow rates, and the inside heat-transfer coefficients.

Aerodynamic and acoustic behavior of a YF-12 inlet at static conditions

An aeroacoustic test program to determine the cause of YF-12 inlet noise suppression was performed with a YF-12 aircraft at ground static conditions. Data obtained over a wide range of engine speeds and inlet configurations are reported. Acoustic measurements were made in the far field and aerodynamic and acoustic measurements were made inside the inlet. The J-58 test engine was removed from the aircraft and tested separately with a bellmouth inlet. The far field noise level was significantly lower for the YF-12 inlet than for the bellmouth inlet at engine speeds above 5500 rpm. There was no evidence that noise suppression was caused by flow choking. Multiple pure tones were reduced and the spectral peak near the blade passing frequency disappeared in the region of the spike support struts at engine speeds between 6000 and 6600 rpm.

Impingement of Water Droplets on a Sphere

Droplet trajectories about a sphere in ideal fluid flow were calculated. From the calculated droplet trajectories the droplet impingement characteristics of the sphere were determined. Impingement data and equations for determining the collection efficiency, the area, and the distribution of impingement are presented in terms of dimensionless parameters. The range of flight and atmospheric conditions covered in the calculations was extended considerably beyond the range covered by previously reported calculations for the sphere.
