Drop Tower Statement of Work

This document details the needs and requirements for a propulsion-assisted drop tower system (further referenced simply as Drop Tower) to perform hardware testing at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). LLNL is managed and operated by Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS) for the Department of Energy (DOE). LLNL requires a robust testing platform that will allow for the characterization of interactions between objects of interest. The initial siting of the equipment will be located in an existing test facility (B191). When another test facility becomes online, the objective will be to move the test capability to the new facility as a final location (B132N). The Drop Tower will be a cornerstone capability for testing and model validation for LLNL interested programs.

Summary of light-element evaluation work: nuclear data uncertainty quantification

Hale & Paris (T-2) have evaluated the 15 N system to provide nuclear cross section and covariance information for nuclear data uncertainty quantification. This memo gives a brief discussion of the R-matrix method used to generate this nuclear scattering and reaction data in the ENDF-6 format.

Getting to the bottom of it: do laser-driven coils really work? (Final Technical Report)

Since claims of ultra-high (up to ~ 1.5 kiloTesla) magnetic fields appeared in the scientific literature, it became necessary to conduct controlled experiments to determine the validity of these claims and assess the real capability of laser-driven coils (LDCs) to produce high B-field to be used in HEDP (high energy density physics) experiments. This project assessed the viability of generating magnetic fields using LDCs. This was accomplished with a thorough analysis of several focused experiments on the OMEGA EP laser at LLE designed to measure the magnetic field inside LDCs. We demonstrated how problems with prior diagnostic analyses have led to overestimations of the magnetic fields generated from LDCs.

Plateau to River Model Predictive Simulations for All Ensemble Realizations to Support Modeling Work in Fiscal Year 2025

The purpose of this environmental calculation file (ECF) is to document predictions of flow and hydraulic head on the Central Plateau of the Hanford Site using the Plateau-to-River (P2R) Model (CP-57037, Model Package Report for the Plateau-to-River Model: Version 9.1). This calculation documents the simulation of the groundwater for the parent model domain of the P2R Model as a basis for use in other applications of the P2R Model. This application is unique from the standpoint that it will simulate all ensemble member models of the P2R Model whereas other applications may only utilize specific ensemble members. These simulations provide results that can be used in the process of selecting an appropriate subset of ensemble members for other applications.

Tradeoffs and Variability of Mechanical Properties in Cold Worked 21-9-6 Stainless Steel Bars

Sub-standard yield stress in a batch of 21-9-6 stainless steel (Nitronic 40) bars was observed while other batches passed requirements. This material requires enhanced property uniformity due to its application in critical components and therefore has tighter restrictions on alloying elements. Using tensile testing, this study investigates the distribution of yield and ductility across bar geometry for three lots of material and is corroborated alongside Vickers microhardness profiles.

The effect of neutron irradiation on conventional and nanocrystalline nickel: NSUF Work Package UA-22PN080501 Milestone M3UA-22PN0805012 (Final Report)

Even though nanocrystalline materials (20-100 nm) present an unprecedented potential, scientific knowledge related to the effect of neutron irradiation on the mechanical properties and microstructure is still scarce. Most of the past studies were conducted using ion irradiation which may not have the same effect as neutron irradiation because of the smaller irradiation volume and the higher dose rate. To reach a firm conclusion on the potential of nanocrystalline materials for nuclear reactor applications, extensive study of model metals with different stacking fault energy (SFE) is required to elucidate their behavior in radiation environments. Nanocrystalline copper and nickel are typically chosen because they are commonly used as model FCC metals in studies of radiation effects. Nickel is an FCC metal with a high stacking-fault energy (~125 mJ/m 2 ) compared to copper (~45 mJ/m 2 ). Hence, microcrystalline and nanocrystalline nickel samples were irradiated in the INL’s Advanced Test Reactor (ATR), as a part of FY08 North Carolina State University NSUF Irradiation Experiment# 96 to evaluate the irradiation behavior of these materials. The objective of this FY20 NSUF project# 19122 is to perform PIE (at PNNL NSUF facility) on previously ATR-neutron irradiated (1.2 and 2.6 dpa; 80-89°C) nanocrystalline and microcrystalline nickel samples to investigate the changes in mechanical properties and microstructures and evaluate whether nanocrystalline nickel is relatively more radiation resistant compared to conventional microcrystalline nickel. To perform PIE at PNNL, sixteen neutron irradiated specimens (microcrystalline and nanocrystalline) were transferred from the NSUF Nuclear Fuels and Materials Library at INL. Experimental techniques such as SEM/EBSD, XRD, TEM, Vickers microhardness and tensile testing were employed to characterize the effect of neutron irradiation on the microstructure and mechanical properties of nanocrystalline nickel and compared them with corresponding characteristics of microcrystalline nickel.

Southeast Regional CO 2 Utilization and Storage Acceleration Partnership (SECARB-USA): Regional Commercialization Plan (Final): Work Products 4.4.b (Regional Commercialization Plan) & 4.3 (Socioeconomic Impacts of CCUS and Workforce Readiness)

Commercialization of carbon capture and storage (CCS) within the SECARB-USA region is scaling up and will continue as governments and private companies expand on current decarbonization efforts. The Inflation Reduction Act (2022) enhanced 45Q tax credits beyond the 2018 Bipartisan Budget Act levels by incentivizing previously uneconomic projects to develop CCS plans and infrastructure. Additionally, the continued interest and support for CCS mitigates the relative risk of commercial-scale projects that are seeking long-term viability to develop capture facilities to accommodate their emissions reduction goals. This multifaceted Commercialization Plan provides an overview of the current status and potential for CCS in the Southeast and the pathways to achieve emissions reduction goals in the region by 2050. Specifically, the study addresses: • The current status of CCS activities in the SECARB region, • Assessment of buildout pathways for CCS projects and carbon transport infrastructure development opportunities, • Estimation of CCS job creation and economic impacts, and • The social justice considerations and public benefits associated with CCS activities in the SECARB-USA region.
